I've been learning about art both fine art and contemporary art in my first semester in college. Now what is contemporary art for you?

OldBob1957We know we're getting old when we sing along with elevator music .@barzzeb49197134  Although J. M. W. Turner lived in the mid-1800s before the impressionists movement, I think he's very contemporary.  The bulk of his work can be seen at the Tate Museum in London.  Last year,  The Tate loaned their Turner collection to The Getty Institute in Los Angeles.   The L.A. exhibit was a big hit.  So from where I sit, contemporary art need not be 'temporary', 'retro', 'antiquated' or 'boring'...

lol... 'Contemporary' is a relative term; emphasis on the 'temporary'.

That said; considering that all my 'contemporary' music is now on the oldies stations, my idea of contemporary art would these days probably be called something like 'retro', 'antiquated', 'boring', or 'What is that old junk?'.

Dad's Garage --

It was a full size, walk through installation of a dimly lit, dingy, oil-stained  garage filled with tools, an old car raised up on blocks, license plates, metal signs, and  static-sounding radio music playing in the background.  Garage shelves stacked high with countless weird and mysterious objects.  Everything from cards with Masonic symbols; broken doll's heads or arms or legs, soda caps, coins, empty soda bottles. You name it.  It was like being transported to an alternate time and place as seen through someone's junk-filled garage.  It even smelled like a musty garage.  Very authentic.  Each time I visited this space,  I always saw something new and unexpected.

And then there's this. My dining room furniture on steroids.

I was wrong.  It's not Dad's Garage.  It's called The Central Meridian (aka The Garage) | LACMA Collections  by Michael C. McMillen

Nancy, maybe you are getting old when you start humming to elevator music, but how about going through the grocery store and they're playing Ian Dury & the Blockheads, "Hit me with your Rhythm Stick" as background muzak.

I know, I know.  I'm getting that too in grocery stores.  Which is fine with me.

Historically, muzak was mind-numbing dreck that nobody except our grandparents could stand.   Then one day in an elevator, I heard  Led Zeppelin's Black Dog and reality set -in.  I'm the new target demographic which means I'm getting older  .
