Italic embeds to PDF from OpenOffice, but not from Word

From Microsoft Word 2010 on Windows 7, if I "Create PDF" the italics for a font I'm using are all replaced by oblique/slanted roman. The font is licensed, and seems to work in other contexts. If I open the same Word file on the same computer in OpenOffice and Create PDF there, the italics embed in the document as expected and look fine (but other elements of the document get mangled, so I can't avoid the issue that way).  Is there some obvious problem that would cause this behavior, or a way to make Word's Create PDF recognize the italic that the computer clearly has?  The folks in the Acrobat forum thought someone here might have some insight.

I'm using a specialty in-house font, but another one that replicates the problem on my computer is the Computer Modern Unicode (.ttf or .otf version) available at SourceForge‌.  Thanks for any guidance anyone can provide: I'm clueless about fonts.
