Using Fonts in a game?

Community Beginner ,
Sep 29, 2022 Sep 29, 2022

Hello.

I'm using Photoshop Elements to create background graphics and sprites for a simple 2D game and some of them contain text (signs, book titles, descriptions etc).

So I was wondering if the fonts that come with photoshop are free to use in this way. Or is a license required?

Thanks for any help

Sure, it's always best to double-check when it comes to font permissions. See this guide for using system fonts commercially, and check the terms directly with Microsoft or Apple. And keep in mind that Google fonts come with a commercial license. https://www.graphicpie.com/system-fonts-commercial-use

Generally speaking, font names that include the word Adobe are their fonts, and you can find some of them here: https://fonts.adobe.com/search?query=Adobe

Hi @Tebe, thanks for your question. Yes, you can use the fonts that are installed with Elements for your game graphics and promotions. With your Creative Cloud subscription, the full Adobe Fonts library is cleared for both personal and commercial use. You can confirm this here and read more information about font licensing from Adobe: https://helpx.adobe.com/fonts/using/font-licensing.html I hope that's helpful!

ETA: If you are using the stand-alone version of Elements, some of the available fonts you see within the program may include your system fonts or other fonts you've licensed and installed and not Adobe fonts. What fonts are you attempting to use?

Hi.

Thank you for answering.

To be honest, I hadn't really thought much about fonts in the beginning so I just used those that seemed appropiate. So I will probably go through my graphics and change them.

As for using the Adobe fonts, I assume that they are the ones that have "Adobe" in their names?

Thanks again for you help and best regards

THE QUICK ANSWER:

Font licensing can differ, depending upon how you plan to use the fonts in question. Adobe Fonts’ licensing terms may cover what you need to do, but there’s a chance that you may need purchase a separate licence for your game.

THE MORE DETAILED ANSWER:

Font licences differ between typefoundries. Most foundries use these terms:

• If the artwork you create includes static text, you pay for a standard licence.

• If the artwork you create includes dynamic text – text that can be created and edited by third parties – you have to pay for a special or custom licence.

If the graphics and sprites you’re building for your game simply include static, unchanging text, the Adobe Fonts licence allows for that. This type of text can either exist in your game as pixels or vector outlines: that means you don’t need to include the font files as part of your game’s application package.

If you need to dynamically create new text in the game using typefaces from Adobe Fonts, that means including the font files as part of your game. This is not covered by the Adobe Fonts licence: you’ll need to contact the typefoundry directly to purchase a licence that meets your needs. The pricing for this type of licence is much more expensive than a standard licence, and may depend upon how many users purchase your game.

I hope that answers your question. If not, please let me know.

Best regards
Andrew

Using Photoshop Elements to create background graphics and sprites for a 2D game aligns closely with the design principles seen in Null's Brawl gaming website. Both require custom visual assets to enhance the player experience. Just as you design detailed backgrounds, signs, and text for your game, Null’s Brawl also uses custom-designed assets to personalize the gaming environment for players on its private Brawl Stars servers. Graphics, such as titles, descriptions, and icons, play a crucial role in both scenarios, creating an immersive experience for users, where visual design becomes integral to the overall game aesthetic and player interaction.

Fonts play a crucial role in game design, affecting readability, aesthetics, and overall user experience. Choosing the right font style enhances immersion—whether it's a futuristic typeface for a sci-fi game or a playful, cartoonish font for a casual game. It's also important to consider legibility, especially for mobile games where screen space is limited. Using bitmap fonts or dynamic text rendering can help maintain performance without sacrificing visual appeal.
