By the way, my theory was about the format of the embedded fonts. Canva likes to convert some fonts to Type 3 format (noone knows why), and that is exactly the case with JUST that one text block in your client's PDF. The rest of the text is properly embedded fonts in OT/TT format. I was able to reproduce the behaviour. Not sure why the text in particular vanished, but the original PDF was version v1.6 and you saved your imposed file out backwards at v1.3, and I think there must be a backwards compatibility problem. Is there a reason why you are using such an old format? I would only flatten files when if there's a troubleshooting issue. Flattening has nothing to do with the issue. In fact, there was no flattening necessary in this file. (You can see this if you open it in Illustrator). Your text object has no effect applied that requires it, and gradations themselves are native objects that don't require flattening. "However, the imposed PDF exported from Preps showed the text object without the gradient" Well, actually, it IS there, it has "shifted" to the far right for some odd reason so only shows mostly the red end. You can also see this if you open the Preps file in Illustrator. I'm curious why you're are saving as PDF/X-1a anyway. Your Preps export is well above that so there should be no reason to save any less than 1.5 (In fact Kodak recommends no less than that. Even when I worked with Preps years ago, we rarely needed to flatten a PDF and only as a troubleshooting attempt. Symbol font substitution has been a thing since the beginning and the days of PageMaker. Whenever a font did not have that specific glyph in its own set (most fonts back in the day didn't), Symbol stepped in. This included standard things like the © and ™. So what you are seeing is normal behavior. Fonts eventually started to include these glyphs and, in the case of Pagemaker, you had an option to use one or the other. InDesign, similarly, does this automatically, and of course newer fonts have them, so the symbol substitution doesn't happen. You will also notice there are no styles to the Symbol font... e.g. there is no Bold version. To be clear, this is separate from the Missing Glyph Protection in Preferences > Advanced Type, which is meant to substitute another font (usually InDesign's default, say Myriad) if the typeface you were using was missing a multi-part glyph like particular accented character. ... First off.... If you want quality, you shouldn't be starting with using the Smallest File Size preset, even if you manually select Maximum Image Quality. Use High Quality or Press Quality (or whatever your printer suggests if you are sending this to print commercially) But despite that, I think your issue is caused by the fact that you have set Color Images to downsample to 300 ppi for images above 300 ppi. (Normally, this would be set at above 450 ppi). So, what's happening is if your images are even a slight bit higher than 300ppi, they are being reprocessed and resampled unnecessarily creating blurry pixels. Reset the Above setting to 450ppi and try again. In fact, considering the relative small size of your final images, you could probably stand to change the Above setting to 600ppi, or, even turn off downsampling altogether. ... View more

A few things here to consider. If you are exporting to High Quality and haven't changed the settings within that preset, by default, the images are being downsampled to 300 ppi if they are over 450 ppi, ... 300 is more than enough for print. If your original image was well above that theshold, say 500 ppi, then in the process of downsampling to 300 it involves taking averages of some adjacent pixels to create new ones... this may cause it to be a bit blurry compared to the original when you zoom in on it, but makes little difference, if at all, in print. As for text, if it's still vector, it shouldn't be affected. However, if it's rasterized or has an effect/transparency that will cause it to be rasterized, you'll find that 300 ppi is not at all enough, and with anti-aliasing, will make text blurry especially the smaller it gets.  Also: where are you viewing the PDF? Do you mean your font changes to a default (like Arial, Times)? Microsoft Power Automate? This would be question for the them. Do they use an Adobe API for conversions? Remember, fonts embedded in a PDF need to be installed on your system, for them to show up and be editable in a PPT. More likely, you'd probably get a default font instead.
