Thanks Arnis. I had considered that FM would have to read the user version of maker.ini last. Still, if I want to make a change for all users, like the EnforcePDFXCompliance one, doesn't it make sense to just make the change once, in Program Files, rather than coordinate all the various maker.ini files in user locations? And, when the update is released and you have to go change everything back, isn't it more efficient to just revert the maker.ini one time? All of this makes me curious to know the use case for making maker.ini files for each user on a given computer. Are significant numbers of people sharing the same computer with the same installation of FrameMaker that user-specific maker.ini files are useful? Anyway, thanks for the tip, Cheers, Sean

So, the kind FrameMaker folks took a look at the files involved and this appears to be an issue with the Type 1 font I was using. I switched to a different font, that is OTF, and the problem went away. There was mention of a potential correction in a future update, but am not sure. Using FM 2019 all patched up. How do I preset PDF properties I create from FM, such as Magnification set to Fit Page? Also, how do I publish an optimized PDF from FM? For example, I just published a PDF from FM that was 15 MB and then I optimized it in Acrobat IX Pro and the file is now 1.5 MB. I would prefer that FM just create the 1.5 MB PDF in the first place. Hi, I have FM 2019 version 15.0.1.430. How do I set the Publish pod to save my PDF to the same location as the current book file? When I Publish to PDF, a folder is created from the book filename, and in that folder a subfolder is created for PDF, and the PDF is put there. I don't want all that drek. I want the PDF to be placed in the same folder as the current book. I also notice that if I open a second book from a different location than the first book, the Publish pod seems to place the output PDF of the second book in the subfolders for the first book and not the second book, which is a pain. Thoughts? Sean

I just ran into this same issue. It appears that FM is outputting CMYK values for my text colors, not RGB. I enabled the Distiller checkbox, which fixed the problem and restored the correct color in the PDF output. However, the reason I am posting is that I have update 1 installed, so the issue is apparently not fixed (unless I am missing something, which might certainly be the case). My version is 15.0.1.430. That's helpful, thanks. I found the extra ini file here, C:\Users\userisme\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\FrameMaker\15. I would rather just make changes in one spot, though, and program files seems to have more items to change. And, the original answer was to make changes in program files, which I did. (Having two maker.ini files feels redundant, although I understand this probably gives different users on the same computer their own settings. Still, I'd have to make this workaround in each and every maker.ini, right? Better to just do it once.) Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else had such trouble editing maker.ini in the program files location. I was wondering why the IT staff had such a difficult time and whether Windows 10 was doing something evil? Sean

Perhaps someone can comment on this. I went to set EnforcePDFXCompliance to OFF. My laptop is "managed" by IT. I couldn't save changes to maker.ini in C:\Program Files\ Adobe\ FrameMaker 19 because of permissions. I spent 60 minutes on the phone with our IT service and no luck. Finally found a workaround to copy maker.ini to a different location, change it, and copy it back, overwriting the original. Anyone run into such a hassle? (The fix worked, though, because I can now create PDFs and open them.) Sean

Great responses here. Unfortunately, I was provoked to try the new Publish pod to create a PDF. It failed with the invalid colorspace error. Am not going to mess with it, though the workaround seems easy; I have another font issue to fix. For the color thing, I'll lay off using the Publish pod until it's fully baked.

What do you mean by "printing to PDF"? Do you mean you use File > Print, then select the Adobe PDF printer instance? Save as PDF is printing, also, it all is. So, why not use Save as? Also, in 2019, the Publish pod is preferred, or so I am told. I don't use it yet, because I really don't know where I want to save the settings file. Twould have been easier if they just added that stuff in the maker.ini file.

Hi, I might be wrong, but I don't think PDF supports the concept of styles. PDF is more of a destination format, the end of the process. As others have said, I'd use PDF --> DOC --> FrameMaker 2019 (12 was okay for me, but I never used 2017). After that, go through page by page and apply your paragraph and character tags. Cheers, Sean

I have 64-bit FrameMaker 2019 in Windows 10 all patched up. There is an instance of Doric Bold, a Type 1 PFM file, that is not Saving as PDF from the File menu but also not from the Publish pod. The character appears correctly as a registered trademark symbol ® in FrameMaker 2019 but in PDF as a capital A with an accent grave atop it. (Note, if I copy and paste that accented A in this HTML window, it pastes as the registered trademark symbol.) Acrobat does correctly identify the font of the character in question as Doric Bold. The character Saved as PDF just fine in FrameMaker 12 in Windows 8.1. But, my system has changed since then. In addition to FrameMaker 2019, I have Acrobat XI Pro on my system. I have gone through Distiller and set Doric Bold to always embed. I have tip-toed through the Adobe PDF printer instance and deselected "Rely on system fonts only; do not use document fonts" with no change. I don't think it matters, but I have TrueType Font set to Download as Softfont and TrueType Download Option set to Native TrueType. I notice I also have a printer on my system called "Microsoft Print to PDF," but this laptop is "managed" and that printer is locked down. So, I am embarrassed to ask, because I used to be good at troubleshooting font issues, but how do I get my registered trademark symbol in Doric Bold to correctly print to PDF? Ideas? Cheers, Sean

That fix for FrameMaker by Adobe is reported for version 1.0.5.1 and below. My FM version is 15 something. Surely they aren't patching FrameMaker versions from 1990?

So, I don't know enough about doing the work of translation to know what to ask. I figured asking if providing DITA XML would save costs over FM or DOCX files, and the answer was no, Word binaries are best. I don't know what specific questions to ask that would cause them to change their opinion. Does that make sense? Cheers.

Hi, So, the layout costs that SDL charges aren't bad. And, I understand the idea that content *should* be structured because binaries are bad and so last century, etc. The trick, of course, is pointing to the savings, and here's one avenue of revenue recovery that I can no longer point to. I have long heard and long been told that using structured FrameMaker would reduce translation costs, in part by removing a DTP component, but also because the XML worked (somehow) well with translation memory software. We currently send Word and FrameMaker binary files to SDL for translation. I reached out to SDL to ask about the benefits of XML from FrameMaker, instead, and they said Word files are best, and then FrameMaker binaries, and that XML was less useful. SDL does a lot of translation, so I was surprised to have my preconceived notions rocked this way. Thoughts? Cheers, Sean

Mif2Go's Word export has always been head and shoulders above the native FM export. When Jeremy was still wrenching on Mif2Go, it was great. But, the product is tricky to use, and I relied on Jeremy a fair bit back when, and he came through. I'd hesitate to recommend the product now, however.

If it helps, I have an FM file that crashes FM 12 when I save as RTF 1.6 but that FM 2019 saves as RTF 1.9 without such an issue. That said, I don't think I am a fan of your workflow, although you say you are using lots of books. Beyond basic paragraph formatting, I don't trust the save as RTF function, particularly for tables and special features like footnotes; Word and FM are just so incredibly different from each other. Instead, I would distribute for printing and viewing as PDF from FrameMaker and work with a PDF-based review cycle, and keep my editing in FrameMaker. Anyway, you can get a demo version of FM 2019 and test it on your FM to see if the output in RTF is better. Cheers, Sean

The white papers seem available now, so problem solved. One problem that remains for me is the form that I need to fill out to get a whitepaper does not display in Internet Explorer. And, for some reason, Internet Explorer opens when I click the whitepapers link in the FrameMaker what's new area and select Read more. IE is not my default browser. To see the form, I must copy and paste the URL into Chrome, which is my default browser.

I just tested. Auto save works for me on the latest FM 2019 build 15.0.0.393. The selection is off by default, but enabling Auto Save Every in the Edit > Preferences location let me set 2 minutes and, sure enough, after 2 minutes I got a *.auto.fm file in the same directory as all my FrameMaker files and the backup files. Just a heads up that the Adobe FrameMaker whitepapers seem broken. In FM 2019, there's a ... I don't know what to call it ... welcome area that has links to blogs, YouTube, Webinars, partners, and whitepapers. I clicked on Whitepapers, selected one (at random, I was only being curious), and then Internet Explorer opened. That's not my default browser (Chrome is), but I was game. The Webpage prompted me to fill out the form; but there was no form. IE had opened but was unable to display the form Adobe put there. So, I copied the URL, pasted it into my default browser (still Chrome), and it took me to a place where I had to give Adobe the same demographics I gave them when I got the demo software and also when I bought the current software (eyeroll). So, I did all that and ended up on a page that encouraged me to click a link to get the whitepaper. "404" Brilliant. I had been RickRolled* by Adobe. Cheers. (*Not really, but you know what I mean.)
