Thanks for providing the additional information. I will uninstall PS from my E: drive and reinstall on the C: drive, likely tomorrow. If that fixes the issue then there is an incompatability between PS and features of the Creative Cloud app. I'll let you know what I find. I do appreciate your support.

Can you give me some technical details why PS would need to be installed on the C: drive? The Creative Cloud app has a setting where you can specify where CC apps are to be installed. I have mine set to E://Program Files/ . If PS has to be installed on C: then why will the CC app let me install it somewhere else? Up to the time I tried to use the Remove Tool, PS worked fine installed on my E: drive. Something isn't making sense.

Today (1/22/2024) I tried setting the Image Processing Preference to Cloud. Photoshop still crashes when I try to use the Remove Tool. What I don't know is whether or not using the Cloud support completely eliminates the AI software from using the NVIDIA graphics processor or just for some parts of the tool's operation. Anyone know the answer? It seems the more I try different approaches, run diagnostics that all say the hardware is good, and double-check the drivers to ensure I'm using the latest releases, the fingers seem to point at the Photoshop installation, possibly a quirky bug with my combination of hardware and software that was not checked in the qualification test suite.

The last thing I did was get on a chat session with Dell Tech Support. The agent recommended that I install the graphics driver directly for NVIDIA rather than using the one supplied by Dell. That's what I did. Photoshop still crashes when I try to use the Remove Tool. Anyone out there have the ability to pass this issue on to an engineering team for analysis?

I uninstalled Phoshop 25.3.1 and then reinstalled it. Problem still exists. Also made sure that Windows knows to use the NVIDIA GPU for photoshop.exe and sniffer.exe. Photoshop says my graphics processor is compatible and it detects the NAVIDA GPU.

Windows 10 & 11 allow the location for the Program Files directory to be placed on drives other than C: On my last system I had an SSD for C:, but over time as I added more apps and app updates became larger and larger, I eventually was fighting a memory usage problem on the C: drive. I was really glad when Microsoft allowed apps/programs to be installed on other drives, although not all apps/programs allowed the installer to do that. At least Photoshop could be installed on a different drive. I eventually traced a large part of the memory shortage on the C: drive to an accumulation of files in C://Users/[my user name]/AppData/ Local/Temp/ where image files were being left (not deleted) when either Photoshop or Photoshop Elements Organizer were terminated. After getting tired of having to constantly delete Temp files I eventually decide to replace my system. My old system, other than for the C: drive issue, worked very well. I suppose I could have upgraded the C: drive SSD, but I figured I'd be better off buying a new system and getting newer technology. On my new system the E: drive is a 2 TB SSD so there's no sacrifice in performance and it keeps my 500 GB OS drive (C:) in a state with lots of available space. In my opinion an app/program should not be written in a way that restricts where it can be installed. Proper use of the Registry should allow for stuff to be put almost anywhere. Hope that provides an answers that satisfies your curiosity.

I did a couple other tests. In Preferences > Performance my NVIDIA GPU was detected so I unchecked "Use Graphics Processor". Photoshop still crashed after about 5 seconds following selection of the Remove Tool. I did the same thing with "Multithreaded Compositing" and had the same crash happen. I'm wondering if there could have been corruption of some part of the Photoshop installation. Is there an integrity checker to validate that all parts of the installation are correct? At this point I'm hesitant to just remove and reinstall Photoshop because I would then need to redo custom settings.

Writing the post above got me to thinking more after I posted it. I added a Photo Filter layer with a little bit of color and low density. That gave me the results I wanted. I would still like to hear other suggestions if any of you have found creative ways to accomplish this.

I have an image that has a totally cloudy sky. The clouds have some variation in brightness and it looks interesting enough to try to emphasize those variations. What I've tried doing is to apply a layer to achieve the desired result. I've selected the sky and then applied a Brightness/Contrast layer. Unfortunately the sliders on this layer won't give me the range of variation I'd like to see. I might be able to use Generative Fill but was hoping to find another way to make the sky interesting. I then thought about using a Black & White layer on the sky. With the various color sliders I actually can create some more variation and contrast, but the clouds shouldn't be pure B&W because they don't look natural. I then though that if I changed the density of the mask that might work, but what that does is to apply the B&W slider changes to the parts of the image I don't want changed (the parts excluded in the full density mask). Any good ideas out there?

Here's something else I found, but don't know if it has relevance to my current issue. It show three events for the NVIDIA graphic unit that happened yesterday all at the same time. Thanks for the link. I did go there and went through the steps. All was fine until I was in the NVIDIA Control Panel and selected Adobe Photoshop (photoshop.exe). In the turorial it shows a choice of which graphics card to use. In my case it showed a long list of settings to use for this program. Based on all the other information I have, I think that the NVIDIA graphics card is the only one being used and that's the one that drives my two displays. Here's a capture of the window that is displayed: Virtually everything is set to "Use global settings". Just out of curiosity I clicked on "Set PhysX Configuration" which displayed the window below, but I have no idea what it means or if it even has significance. My back panel has 4 connectors and I'm using the left 2 when viewed from the back.

Where should I be posting issues like the one I made today? Photoshop Ecosystem is the only one that seems to come up. I have another strange situation that I'd like to get help / feedback on that may be a product defect.

I have a Dell Precision 3660 Workstation, with Windows 11 Version 23H2 OS Build 22631.3007, and NVIDIA RTS A2000 12 GB graphic. The Dell diagnostic tools report that the graphics are functioning without error. I have run 2 different checks and they both say that all drivers are up to date. DelI's version of the NVIDIA driver is reported as 31.0.15.3770, however this does not match up with the version shown on NVIDIA's web site, likely because it's really the Dell version number. I have loaded an image in Photoshop 25.3.1 and then tried to use the Remove tool to edit the photo. I was hoping to experiment with the feature and have never tried it before. For several attemps after selection the remove tool and moving the curor over the image, Photoshop presented an hour glass for about 5 seconds, then crashed. On one of these tries I found an event log which reported an Exception Access Violation from Thread 0 with the message "3221225477 The instruction at 0x%p referenced memory at 0x%p. The memory could not be %s." On my last attempt, Photoshop recognized a problem and presented me with a window that allowed me to send in an error report, which I did. There are a number of logs stored on my system but I don't see anything that lets me diagnose the issue. I have looked at the Adobe site and found that there is a known issue with the Remove Tool where there is a recommendation to make sure the latest driver is installed and then to select the "More Stable" option for Remove Tool processing. I made the change but the problem still existed. One option would be to load a new graphics driver directly for NVIDIA, however, Dell provides customized drivers for their systems. A call to Dell Tech Support didn't provide any details of what the customization entails, nor any idea regarding what the consequences might be if I did replace the Dell driver with the NVIDIA driver. For now the Remove Tool is not essential to what I'm doing, but any crash is concerning to me. Any thoughts?

Thanks for information. It would be really nice if it did support .psb files, but it is what is.

I'm currently using Photoshop Elements 2022 Organizer to manage my collection of images. Recently I've been generating some files in Photoshop 25.3.1 that exceed the 2 GB limit for storage as .psd files. I'm then forced to store them as .psb (format for large files). However the 2022 Elements Ogranizer won't import .psb files using File > Get Photos and Videos > From Files and Folders. Would upgrading to the 2024 version solve this dilemma? I've verified that there's only one instance of the specific .psb file I'm trying to import. Since .psb is an Adobe file format, it seems as though support for that format should be consistent across products. New feature request maybe? I also find that there are some .psd files for which the Elements 2022 Organizer will not display a thumbnail image, rather it just puts up an icon that looks like a torn page as appears below, suggesting that it must think there's something wrong with the file or at least with the thumbnail: The ones you see above are all .psd files, not in stacks like the others that do appear. Some of the files that won't show thumbnails are large and some are not. Other larger .psd files do show the thumbnail. These files are all viewable in Photoshop and Adobe Bridge. Any thoughts?

I haven't figured out how to do that with a mask on a Generative Fill layer. Using a brush to remove some of the mask didn't seem to work. I'm probably doing something wrong, but have no idea what. I ended up using the Sky Replacement feature which let me select a reasonable sky for this image just to make the sky more interesting since the original color image had a blue sky with no clouds. Then I was able to correct an artifact resulting from something I removed with a Generative Fill layer. I applied a Brightness/Contrast layer as a Clipping Mask applied to another Generative Fill to get things looking smooth and continuous. Likely the hard way to do it but it works and I'm satisifed. Although I've been working with Photoshop for many years there's so much more I need to learn! As far as a comment I made about trying to retain image integrity, there are times that I think it is important even when it's not related to image use in commercial settings. This image was a case where I was willing to let artistic creativity be the guide, rather than showing the scene exactly as it was originally photographed. There certainly are a few people who would know that the image has been doctored, but they are not likely to ever see the final one. Here's the original color image followed by the "new" black and white artistically creative image. Thanks for all the helpful suggestions. For anyone interested this photo was taken in Silver City, Idaho.

The reason I went to Gnerative Fill is that it seemed like a reasonably direct (easy?) way to change or remove something that I didn't like or to which I wanted to make a modest improvement that didn't really change the basic nature of the image. I guess I was expecting more capability from Generative Fill than was really available right now. I have not seen a thread that suggest how to structure Generative Fill requests. All that I've seen are the short, one sentence suggestions that come along with invoking the tool. I'm also somewhat torn between leaving an image the way it was shot or making changes that don't retain the basic content and integrity of the original photo - in other words after eigher using Generative Fill or blending in part of another image, the new image is not the real scene, but rather some kind of abstraction of it. In some ways it's a bit of an ethical dilema for me. How I reconcile what to do must consider what the intent of the final image will be. Am I trying to do artistic creation and "reality doesn't matter" or am I trying to show a real place as I saw and photographed it with just a few changes the enhance the composition. These new technological advances sometimes make the decision as to what is acceptable to do much harder to make.

The sky that you added to my image is more of what I was hoping Generative Fill would provide. I suppose that in time things will improve significantly. Bill

I appreciate the feedback. I'm also wondering why the generative fill actually modifies areas that are outside the selected area. Bill

I had to recreate my attempt at adding clouds to the sky of a black and white image. Exactly what you see below is a little different than what I saw yesterday when I was working on this photo. This first screen shot is what I started working with. Not quite all of the layers are visible in the layers panel. There's a B&W layer at the top of the stack. The next screen shot shows my request to add a few high-level cirrus clouds to a portion of the sky. And here is the resulting fill: This is somewhat different from many of the results I received yesterday, but it still illustrates the problem. First the clouds are cumulus and not cirrus and they are not along the top of the image. They fill about 80% of the selected area. Second, the Generative Fill added more mountains above the ones that existed before the fill was performed and are now blocking some of the sky. The ones added today are a bit more consistent with the real mountains in that location, while yesterday's were jagged, rocky peaks. Third, there was a strange object added to the top of the outhouse and the lettering on the sign over the door that said "Shown by Appointment Only" has been changed to something that is not recognizable. The outhouse was not in the selected area to be filled. I will add that the instructions I gave to Generative Fill for this example are not exactly the same as what I was telling it to do in yesterday's attempt, but the general nature of what I was asking for is the same. The other Generative Fill layers you see in the layer stack worked quite well to remove things that I did not want in the image. For those Generative Fills I did not give instructions for what I wanted. I just selected the area I wanted "replaced" then clicked on the Generate button and let it do its thing. I'd appreciate any thought you might have about the way I'm trying to give instructions or whether I'm expecting the tool to do more than it's currently capable of doing. Bill

I'm also having trouble getting Generative Fill to create realistic clouds to use to enhance a bland sky. I've asked for "a few small clounds" which generated a fill with a large mountain range and some big clouds, I've asked for "a thin layer of circus clouds" which generated cumulus clouds, and another one where an eliptical selection was made, asked for circus clounds and it generated nothing. I'm beginning to wonder if the language understanding model is not able to parse out the key parts of my request. I have had some pretty good results when I'm making a selection of something I want removed from the image. In those cases I did not specify what to do, just clicked the generate button with no instructions.
