As @jane-e  already explained, do not crop; instead, mask that layer/image. Create a selection using the Rectangular Marquee tool with the Style in the options bar set to Normal (see screenshot), then click on Create Layer Mask at the bottom of the Layers panel. If you insist on deleting pixels, right-click on the mask and select Apply Layer Mask. This won't work when working with a Smart Object layer, which must be rasterized to apply the layer mask and delete pixels hidden by the mask. Another method to delete pixels is to create a selection, invert it, and press Delete. It is advisable to create a layer mask instead of permanently deleting pixels, just in case. ... View more
