My goal is to simulate light shining on the side of a building by using an elliptical marquee and a curves adjustment layer. However, when I draw out the ellipse and try to adjust its position using the Free Transform, it seems I get an overlap of the new position with the original position. It seems what I have to do is to apply the original ellipse to the curves adjustment layer and then do a Free Transform on that mask layer. Is this the only way or is there a better and different way? Thank you.

All my photos now have the exclamation point. I have a couple of questions: What is the correct choice of options. Is it Retry Metadata Export of Import Settings from Disk? I have my images on an external drive and my catalog and Lightroom settings up on Dropbox. (I previously had all my images on Dropbox as well, but just moved them to the external drive. Can my catalog and setting be on Dropbox, as long as I have them set to being available Offline? If I move Catalog and Settings to my local hard drive, will the problem go away? Thanks

I forgot how to set Lightroom so that if I filter a folder based on star rating and come back to that folder, the same filter will be applied and not the filter setting of the previous folder. Locking the filter keeps that star rating for other filters and that's not what I want.

Yup. I know what I need to do. I do have one more question though. My SmartPreviews.lrdata file is date Sept 19, 2020 as Create Date and Date Modified. Would that make a difference? I'm just curious. I am going to set up my External Drive as the source for my pictures and not Dropbox.

I understand what you are saying, but this has worked for me up until now. I do have an external drive that I do have a back-up of my library on. However, I'd rather not have to carry around this drive all the time. I may have to resort to that though.

I've been running Monterey for quite some time and while, of course, I would get the Exclamation icon indicating file was lost, I still had the Smart Preview and could go through my images. I'm not sure if the latest Lightroom update caused the problem or not, but I'm skeptical about that. I'm sort of at a loss. I'm going to try making the files off-line, recreate Smart Previews, and take off-line to see what happens. I'm also wondering if my issue might be a Dropbox sync issue. Anyhow, I really appreciate the help. I'll get back with any progress.

It's Smart Previews and I've never had a problem before even for files that are not local. It does appear that is part of the problem though. I'm going to try to rebuild my Smart Previews and see if that helps.

It's not so easy as that as I have my catalog on Dropbox and because they are so large, I can only make about 4 months of images available at a time due to hard drive space. I'll try that though.

I did add Lightroom Classic to give Full Disk Access. I also went ahead and reset preferences. Is there a way to get to my set of Preferences that I had before resetting? I did copy them to my Desktop before doing anything. Also how long should I have to wait until I start seeing the Smart Previews? Finally, do I have to be connected to the external hard drive that contains the Originals in order for the Smart Previews to build?

Okay, I did what @JohanElzenga suggested. In Library view, when viewing in Grid mode, I don't see any images. However, if I open an image in Develop, the preview does open. Does this help give some insight as to what my problem may be? Thanks.

I should add that the Previews I see appear to be photos I've edited or rated although I am not 100% certain.

My Smart Previews are not loading when I open a folder in which my originals are stored in an external hard drive that is off-line. In each of two folders I've opened, a handful of Previews load, but that's it. I appreciate any help you can offer. David

Hi Chuck, I was thinking that might be the way to do this, but I wasn't sure if when you filled with white or black that the amount of fill would be adjusted accordingly to the tones in the luminosity mask. Maybe I over thought it. Thanks! David

Yes, I am using an English keyboard. I suspect it may be an issue with Mac. Yeah, I hate resetting the preferences as that is always a pain. I'll wait to see if anyone else on a Mac has issues.

That's it Chuck! My Sky group was at 69%. For groups, the blend mode is typically pass through. If the opacity of my group was at 100%, would I still be 'good' even if the blend mode is pass through. I think so, but just checking.

I have a selected Sky group masked where the sky is visible and the foreground is not. Foreground layers are below this sky group. I have not masked the sky out of these foreground layers. Can you explain why changes I make in the foreground layers appear in the overall image? I thought that since the Sky group was on top those settings would block out anything below.

Hi Todd, I had posted a reply to @dj_paige but I don’t see it now. I did figure out that it was due to not enough tonal separation. I was able to use luminance range though successfully. Thanks for the help.
