As I said, the first case was with simplified files, to prove that output sizes don't match input sizes. For a real world example, please see this dropbox link: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/i2pn42wsawmyr1q/AAB3o3xUMTw8HXYu-NNtd2Bna?dl=0 AND - note the attached screen shot. Highlighted file originals are each about 66mb, exported are 201mb. Over 300% increased filesize. There's another issue - the source files, once modified, take a very very very long time for each to save, regardless of what kind of change was made. The versions that were exported from a stack save in a short, reasonable amount of time. I don't know why... Hoping for some insights...

Hello, I need to better understand exporting layers to files. Suppose I have source folder that has 4 TIFFs, no channels, no additional layers, none that are smart objects, etc. Boringly simple. base.tif xxx.tif yyy.tif zzz.tif I create a stacked file with base as the bottom layer, and xxx, yyy, and zzz as the additional three layers. Now I opt to export layers to files to a separate destination folder. No compression. At the end I have 4 new files. The filesizes are different (please see attached JPG), visually, the source and dest files seem to be the identical. In particular with my simple test: Can I reliably expect that the destination files are the exact same as their sources, visually (not just by eye)? Why would the destination files be a different size? I'm hoping the answer has to do with metadata, not the image data. While the files I mentioned are simplified for testing purposes, I have real-world files whose sizes grow by 30% when I stack and then export them back out. Thanks!!!

Thanks Stephen. I just did the arithmetic: 140 files at 60 mb each is only about 8.2 gig, so I guess that's manageable. Will try and see...

Hello Mangurian, Thanks for the quick reply. I'm concerned about filesize. Were your layers TIFFs/PSDs or JPGs? Thanks!

Hello, Is there a practical or upper limit to how many files I can load into a stack? I have 140 TIFs, all identical in resolution, shot on a locked down tripod, of fireworks. Each file is about 60mb on a Win10/64 compressed SSD. The computer has 64 gig of memory. I want to stack, crop, and then export all these into a separate output folder. If this is just too many to do at once, is there a suggested approach to get these all cropped and still remain aligned/registered? (I can think of a couple approaches, but welcome practical suggestions). I need to keep them aligned as these will be assembled into a simple slide show afterwards. (Does anyone have suggestions on an app for creating a slideshow?) Thanks for your help. Running both PS 26.4 (release) and the most current Beta on up to date Win10/64. Thank you! Jerry

Hello, This appears to be an issue with a set of files I have, not with PS. However, I don't know how to get this resolved... I have a set of about 140 TIFs that each take FOREVER to save. I've flattened them, deleted all extraneous channels, saving to a fast internal SSD that's defrag'd (safely) that has over a tb of open space. Each file, about 60 mb, takes about 3 minutes+ to save, no matter what changes were made to it. It doesn't matter if I'm saving manually, or via some kind of action. It doesn't matter whether it's the most current PS beta or the most current release. Absolutely maddening, especially when I have about 140 TIFFs that each need to receive the same adjustments (curves, etc.). Similar sized files from all other non-related projects on the same disk take about 3 seconds to save. This is what my normal "save" write times are. The difference: The slow files were denoised by 3rd party (Topaz AI) using their stand-alone app (so I could batch denoise/sharpen etc.). All other project's files on the same disk... some denoised, some not, but they all are the usual save speed of around 3 seconds (if even that long). It gets even weirder: I opened one file, and then stacked another 15 or so as layers on that base (via drag 'n drop). then exported all the layers as new files. The resulting output files, all with the same resolution behave normally. If I open one of the exported files, visually it's exactly the same as the original, same resolution etc. can be opened, modified, and saved, and the save time is back to being around 3 seconds. So the act of exporting apparently removes information/contents that are problematic??? Oddly, the exported file from the layer is more like 220mb, whereas the original was about 65mb. I have a ticket open with Topaz as well, but looking for the bottom line: What could make files take SOOO long to save? File canvas sizes are each 20x28 inches, no layers, no smart objects, so nothing that's very large... Running on Win10/64 (current release). I've placed one of the files on Dropbox for assessment: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/i2pn42wsawmyr1q/AAB3o3xUMTw8HXYu-NNtd2Bna?dl=0 Thanks for your insights!

Adding a "Me TOO!!!" for 24.3 (most recent upgrade). Actions that have worked for years that save files are now failing with the error message: "Could not complete the command because of a program error". Narrowed this down to the "save" statement in the action. I created a new, dummy action that duplicates a layer, then attempts to save. boom! [EDIT]: Just reverted to previous version 24.2.1, and file saving via actions works as expected. How could a bug this obvious have still allowed the update to be released?

bwinkjet - thank you for the update. J E L - for me and I'm sure many many others - it's the holiday season now, and there's just absolutely no time to go through all the diagnostic efforts - again. I started this post back in early July, and sadly, it sat in limbo for the bulk of the time since. For the various test paths you mentioned, I'll cut to the chase. I completely paved my system (i.e. hard format on the primary hard disk), installed the OS, installed PS and the problem repro'd 100% of the time. PS was a virgin installation; i.e. no changes to prefs, all under a completely clean box. I'm not about to try all that again, knowing the extreme likelihood that doing so will get me different results this time around. And again - especially not with the holiday season now in play. I'm not the only one reporting this, so I'm not totally crazy. In a wouldn't it be nice world, I'd love to see Adobe TS get involved, but I don't have the luxury of time any more, I just have to live with an unstable system; something I am certainly not excited about... Thank you...

Thank you, J E L. The challenging part - my past experiences with the Adobe support team have all been vast and deep rabbit holes with no solutions, broken promises to call back, and a few folks who actually deleted files off my desktop and kept going even when I was screaming STOP STOP STOP! All this mixed with a lot of finger-pointing at DELL, even though the experience (like this) is specific to Adobe products.

I've reported the same issue. After launching and then quitting PS, it leaves behind a process that you can see in task mgr. As long as that process is present, PS will not <re>launch, since it doesn't allow duplicate instances. This has been an irritating, long-standing problem for quite a few months. I first noticed it in PS 22, did a clean uninstall, and then a reinstall, problem existed. No plug-ins were in use at that time. It also happened when I paved my production box, did a clean (obviously) install of PS, and the problem repr'd as well. This is now present in PS 24.

bwinkjet - Thank you, for at least confirming I'm not the only one seeing this. The issue with using TM, it doesn't always work, and it's really really a bad solution. There are times when it the PS process doesn't show in TM, but I still can't launch PS. If I have to use TM multiple times, when PS does happen to launch again, it's unstable. Menus are screwed up (won't display text or icons) and overall behavior is extremely unstable. Would really be nice to have some support from PS on this... Extra bonus - this also happens (but not as often) with LR classic.

Bumping to try to get answers, please. I just upgraded to PS 24, the same exact problem persists. This is a major issue, especially with the holiday photo season now beginning. Being forced to reboot my machine every time I relaunch PS really wastes a LOT of time. Can someone in the PS support community please help??? This problem has been a non-stop issue for many months now (it was happening long before I launched this thread). Thanks

Thanks, Cory - I will double check, but as mentioned above, this was issue right after paving and reinstalling the OS on the box (and ensuring all drivers were current at that point). I won't be able to update drivers for another week or so, as I'm in production on a huge show I just covered this past Sunday honoring the wonderful and legendary drummer Alan White. Alan was one of our very best friends, and musicians from YES, Queen, Heart, Journey, Dream Theater, TSO and many others who all flew in to perform the signature songs Alan had recorded on the originals (Imagine with J. Lennon, My Sweet Lord with G. Harrison, along with the YES catalog that he was drumming with since 1973 or so). So until I can finish off everything from this, I won't be touching the drivers of course... Thanks!

That's correct. Slightly more detail: There are times that even when I use TM to delete the process that PS will not launch. REBOOT needed <argh!> There are times that after PS has closed, that there's no obvious process (for me to delete), but PS still will not launch. REBOOT needed <argh!> Quite maddening, especially when facing critical pub deadlines... Thanks again...

Hi JEL, Thanks for the review on my system. At the time that I initially started this thread, my production machine had just been freshly paved, and all drivers were current (ensured by the TS team's review at Dell FWIW). The issue we're discussing was present and problematic from the moment that the Adobe products I use (PS, LR) were installed. I will get the video drivers up to date ASAP. The external drives are actually each internal SSDs. My primary SSD has 3 separate partitions, one of which is E:\, and the secondary SSD has the H:\ partition. I will take a look at the Portrait Pro plugin, but this too was not installed at the time I reported the issue. Please note, FWIW, the problem also happens occasionally with LR, in which there's this weird leftover process, but LR seems to know how to get around it. PS absolutely will not launch if there's the remnant PS process. So, I greatly appreciate your time for this, but don't think we're even close to the cause of this yet. Hoping you'll continue investigating!!! Thank you!

Hi JEL I didn't receive a notification that you had replied else I would have responded much much sooner. This problem is maddening, and I often have to reboot my machine in order to relaunch PS. Hi all, REALLY HOPING someone has answers for this. It's an ongoing issue on my machine for both LR and PS. They each leave behind a running process (seen in Task Mgr) when the apps quit. This completely prevents the app from starting , again. Please help! Thanks.

Hi Jain, Sorry that it took a while to respond, but I have updated info. 1. For reasons outside the context of this thread, I ended up paving the box, reinstalling Win10Pro, along with all the CC apps of course. I ensured I was installing the absolute most recent versions of PS and LR (installing via CC of course). 2. The moment PS and LR were installed (so everything was virginal fresh), I fired up each app and quit, one at a time; i.e. there was never an instance of both running simultaneously. 3. Residual processes for PS and LR were still running. These prevented PS and LR from launching. 4. The only solution was to use task mgr to manually quit each process. Sometimes after quitting, there would be 2 processes with the same name, not just one. To reiterate, they each had to be killed before I could relaunch. This duplicate behavior is a very recently started behavior, perhaps with the last update, certainly wasn't present 4 or 5 months ago, but I'm not sure when it actually started. Hoping you can get answers on this. It's a pain! Thanks, Jerry

Hi Barry, Thanks for joining in on the conversation. I've shot flat art for many years, and have been aware of the inherent issues of getting the art normal (perpendicular) to the film plane. I also measure each piece carefully so I know what my output/target dimensions need to be, and use Transform/Warp to get things square. All that goes pretty quickly for me. A bit tedious, but I have it down to a smooth workflow. All previous assignments with flat art used a Nikon d850 or earlier DSLR. But - here's what triggered this thread. I used the Z format of Nikon's 50mm micro/macro. With all my F-mount micros, straight lines were straight lines, and long ago, learned to not use zooms. The new Z version of the 55 has distinctive pincushion distortion, which was a complete and unwanted surprise. Because of short working distance and larger pieces, I couldn't use my 105mm which I know is distortion-free. So all of this discussion was that I wanted get rid of the pincushion distortion programmatically, and am surprised that PS is 6+ years slow to the party. In my current installation of PS CC 2022, neither the body (Z9) nor the 55 micro are in the dropdown lists. The most current body is the D5, no Z bodies at all. Thanks again...

That may be, but shouldn't there be an updated set of lists from Adobe? The bodies listed are ancient by comparison.

Hi Ken. I just installed the 14.4 version of ACR. Didn't fix the issue, there are no Z models listed, in fact there are only a few bodies shown: D3 D300s D3x D4 D7000 D5 For lenses, I selected the 50mm f2.8 (hoping that this corresponds to the macro) and the profile that showed up was for a Sigma macro. Your thoughts?

Hmmm. I need to try to figure out how to install the ACR plugin. I saw the link in your earlier post, but didn't see a link to d/l this. The download button I clicked took me to a page for downloading PS, and other Adobe applications. Maybe I just missed this... On a completely separate thread (and not wanting to hijack my own thread here), I posted what appears to be a bug for PS CC 22: When I quit PS, there's a background app that continues to keep running. As long as it's there, I cannot relaunch PS. I have to use task mgr (Windows) to force-quit it. Unfortunately there's a typo in the headline that says "quite" instead of "quit", and I discoverd this after my editing window closed. Hoping you or one of your peers can take a look please... Thanks for your help! Jerry

Hi Kevin, thanks for sharing this. I didn't realize that ACR was an update-able component. However I'm trying to correct TIFs that were generated via Nikon NXStudio as that's my default app of choice. The portion of PS that I was hoping to utilize is FILTER/lens correction. In that set of dropdowns, the list of camera bodies and lenses are significantly out of date. And perhaps I missing some steps here (all too likely) - is there a way to correct barrel or pincushion manually withing ACR, with pre-existing TIFs rather than via importing NEFs and inheriting lens distortion corrections automatically (if that's how it works)? If I'm really out in the weeds on the process, I'd love to understand how the steps necessary to straigten out the TIFs applying camera make/model/lens info that's current. Many thanks!

Hoping for some immediate help. PS doesn't quit completely. After using it and then quitting, it leaves behind a background task that's still running, named "Adobe Photoshop 22" Please see attached screenshot . This prevents me from relaunching PS (apparently). If I use task manager to kill this instance of PS, then I can relauch Photoshop again. If I leave this running, clicking on the PS icon in my taskbar (or any other launch methods) all fail. No alerts or warnings, just PS won't launch. Best guess is that as long as the background task is present, PS thinks it's a working instance and aborts the launch process. This is new to me after installing 23.4.1 (current). Win10/64, 64gig ram, Running everything on reasonably fast SSDs.

Hello, I am getting noticeable pincushion distortion from my brand new Nikon Z7 + Z mount Nikkor 50/f2.8 macro. I shot a series of flat-art paintings, and need to correct these ASAP (not sure why the distortion even happened, but that's a separate discussion with Nikon). These will all be uprez'd by 3x the original size, and then used as sources for online orders for the artist. The finished images will be printed on giclee. At 3x, the pincushion will be significantly visible, so this has to be corrected. I went into PS lens correction options, and neither the Z9, nor the lens show in the lists of recognized gear. In fact, the most current camera body I can see appears to be the D5, and the lens isn't listed (only the Sigma 50/2.8 as the closesst match that I could see). Questions: 1. Is there a more current list of bodies and lenses in PS? I'm current on my CC PS subscription (ver 23.4.1). And if so, how do I update this list, please? 2. is there a suggested method for correcting the distortion that's reasonably fast? 3. Each painting was suspended, and shot horizontally, not top-down, so there are "twists" since the art isn't perfectly normal to the camera plane. (i.e. right edge may be a half inch further away from the camera plan, the art may not be perfectly vertical, etc.) Once the twists are corrected for, the pin-cushion becomes immediately obvious. That's easy to correction via transform. But the pincusion is a bit more time-consuming, each edge needing this. 4. If #2 is yes, can I assume the distortion is the same, is consistently the same for all images, regardless of the amount of twist there may be? Hoping you can help. I have 12 images to correct in post, so that's 48 edges on large files (46 mpx camera). Running PS CC v 23.4.1 on Win10/64 (also current). Thank you, hoping for a working solution! Jerry PS - If this help request needs to be posted in a different community group, please advise. Thank you.

Hi DraegerArt, Exactly. No diagnostic tools made available to us. And you reminded me - my machine is relatively decent, a 2 year old Alienware box with 64 gig, all SSDs. Decent enough in my case that the issue can be called due to a limited slow box.

Conversations with MS were short and pointless, since all other apps on my box worked perfectly, thus enabling MS to launch the finger-pointing. To reiterate from others, each company points fingers, we fall through the gap, and watch our production time go kablooey when a reboot is needed and workflow is blipped out. I repeatedly asked for trapping tools from Adobe, something that could at least produce some kind of debugging info/crash info... something revelatory! And standard response was "we don't got us one of those." Since I was a voice of "one", no leverage was available and rinse, spit, and repeat..

Brian - you nailed it. Completely. The first step in this is to get Adobe to acknowlege there's an issue. The TS people were all people who's apparent goal is to convince the user that it's their fault/issue and filter out anyone who's not persistent enough. Eventually when I was able to reach a tier 2 tech, there was a lot of time spent trying to show that it was my machine, it was my configuration, it was my <fill in the blank>. I won't detail all the hours of time wasted circling this black hole of non-acknowlegement, but 8+ hours at least, wasted with no tangible solutions. Plus cleaning up the mess that the entry level tech support people created (one of whom DELETED come critical files I had on my desktop, even when I screamed STOP STOP STOP!!!!!). Arrogance combined with incompetency = bad [removed by moderator] all around! Brian - more to your point, we shouldn't have to spend our billable hours trying to find solutions for something that's gone on for a very long time. The problems were present in PS 2021, and have continued on as a very unwelcome time-sucking shadow. I'm always a little nervous about quoting delivery times and dates now, given this ongoing issue...
As I said again, in my case, the issue gets exposed and amplified if I happen to run Chrome. That seems to make the PS environment quite unstable. Thanks again!

FWIW, I don't dare have Chrome open while trying (... TRYING ...) to run PS 2022. In fact, if my Windows session had Chrome running at anytime before launching PS, about half the time PS won't open, or if it does, won't open any files I want to edit. The moment Chrome's been running, I have been forced too many times to just effn reboot the computer, and then try to remember not to launch Chrome. Whatever it's doing, if feels like there's been a 7 coil steamer kinking the works. I haven't tried to test this with other browsers, nor have I monitored the number of instances of Webview 2 that are running.
