It looks like you have the "two triangle" cursor icon when you pick up the first image in your screen cap, like Adobe Illustrator shows when you drag-copy someting in that program.
The two triangle cursor, a black one layered over a white one with a black border, is a minimal but consistent indicator that you are drag-copying something you've selected. When you release, you are getting the desired result, and that's the important thing. The indicator is subtle, but it is there. Of course that's nowhere near as good as seeing what you're drag-copying, or even seeing an outline frame you could use to line things up if you're doing precision positioning.
The only thing I'd suggest trying is placing a couple of ruler guides, one vertical and one horizontal, and seeing if you get a frame-like image when you line things up. You may also want to turn on the View>Grids & Guides>Snap To Guides option and see if that changes the rules as you drag-copy something into position. I just did that with my Mac running IDCC 2023 (I'm not on the latest version for Mac to match up with a client — long story) and I see the outline frame when I drag-copy something with InDesign.
Hopefully something in this will be helpful for you.
