Thanks Abishek - we've explored these options, but for lots of simple notes and draggable reference content, it doesn't work out very well. Anchoring can be particularly cumbersome, and anchored objects in the margin don't seem to respect relative-to-spine positioning.

Hi Mike - We already do that, but we'd like to be able to generate a PDF without having to manage visibility. Also, if a page switches sides, the notes can end up in the middle of the document.

Thought for a minute I had discovered the secret to getting margin notes to move along with a page, but alas... Is there a way to make this happen?
As important as a slug area may be, it's essentially useless (in my current use case) if notes need to stick with their content.

Great, thanks. Would be even better if we could hit the space first to avoid having to be careful about dragging handles, but I can work with this...

I've got a project with LOTS of linework, and don't want lines to automatically join when I draw. Is there a way to do that on the same layer? TIA

Looks interesting! I've been setting that up manually so as to evaluate imported content. I'll check it out.

Thanks Robert - Would this mean, then, that it's possible to save and load content order at a panel level? And, if so (and pushing my luck) that we might have a separate "panel content order" panel that lets us select different panel content layouts at a click? And, naturally, we could color-code the individual items like layers. One can dream.

The content of the panels. So, for example: • I have my Paragraph Styles panel arranged by recent use. • Someone else, at their location, works on the document & sorts the Paragraph Styles panel alphabetically. • When I open the document again, I'd like my own Paragraph Styles panel to remain arranged in the "recent use" order I last used it. Thanks. Original post updated for clarity.

I like to keep my Styles panels' content organized differently than some other people also working on the ID file. However, the content of the panels (e.g. Styles sorted alphabetically) remain in the order that the last person using them left them in. Is there a way to return a panel to a previous state?

Hi James - thanks - yeah, looks like spot formatting throughout. There's only one story with footnotes (about 40), but If I had more, I'd probably do a few find/replaces to get them into styles.

I've imported a Word doc with endnotes, which brought formatting with it (italics).
Is there any way to control the Character Styles for these?
TIA

Once a page is edited, its Primary Text Frame "detaches" from the Parent, or, otherwise, is editable. However, if the Parent page is re-applied, it creates an additional text frame. Is there a way to avoid this? TIA

Thanks Robert - sorry, should have noted that I'm looking for a description beyond Unicode, though that's helpful. For example, rather than seeing "Unicode 0x20", which results in "Space", I would see the more detailed description of whatever that symbol is. In this example, the character I've highlighted above indeed comes up as 0x20, "Space", but so does the "single dot" type space that normally appears between words. So, part of this is understanding the difference!

Just wondering if there's a way to highlight a special character and identify it within ID, i.e. highlight the character we're trying to identify, and have it referenced somewhere within the interface? Example given because I like pictures... but this would apply to any special character added internally or imported from other sources such as Word. Thanks!

Thanks Alan! I'll read this & see if I can understand it 🙂 Ok... pretty cool, but need it to work on a predefined character style (containing a different font) within paragraphs of the main font. So, without GREP recognizing paragraph styles, I'll have to figure out if there's a convenient workflow to get around the limitation. Part of the convenience of the custom font is single keypresses to get the symbols, since the symbols appear very frequently throughout the volume(s). That said, I'm going to experiment with opt-keypresses since that would work with symbols that are unused elsewhere in the copy.... †˙å˜˚ß. Edit: I think that because each instance uses two character styles, the GREP rules need to be modified to identify symbols both before and after other related symbols, and apply the style to each. I'll see if I can figure that out.

Hey James - thanks - The use isn't very complex, I think; currently I'm building the font (let's call it Map Symbol). I have two Character Styles for this - Map Symbol, for the initial symbol, and Map Symbol Orange, which applies to any number of symbols coming immediately after the first. This applies through the entire volume. I've just been applying them manually.

Hi - thanks - yes, it does come after other characters in the same paragraph, frequently, such as: Serro moluptur, cum quaspicab ima cusdanis cupta aut #& fugia vendipiene oditatus, cor re, ius aut optios aut abo.

I have a document for which I'm creating custom symbols as a font. I'm using the custom font in a character style, and I need to be able to change colors of the fonts based on the order in which they appear. So, for example, I have a # symbol as the letter A, and the ampersand as the letter B. I type "AB" and apply my symbol font character style, and get #&. Based on the colors I need (and am currently applying manually), it should look like: #& However, sometimes, the characters (but not the colors) are reversed: &# and I will always need the second letter (and any after that) to be orange. Is there a way to do this so as to avoid manually applying color to every instance? Or, somehow, of programmatically applying the color so that when I clear overrides, the font colors remain? I think the answer may be somewhere in GREP, but I haven't used it enough yet to... know how to do it 🙂 I searched a bit, but am not sure what GREP functions would be used. I assume it would be something like telling GREP that every time text has a specific character style, any letters after the first should have a duplicate character style with a specific color applied. Something like that? Any thoughts? TIA

And yet, Adobe employees answer in these support forums (tagged below)... when it's actually possible to answer, of course 😉 In this case, based on previous attempts to contact Adobe directly - well, I'll try again, but it hasn't been useful in the past. I anticipate being sent to the same page referenced earlier. Maybe it'll be different this time? Since it's inherently a legal issue, in my opinion, it should be addressed in a way that's clear and easy for a layperson to interpret without undue research. @Amal.
