Gradients do not "repeat" automatically. In this case it would be best to create a vertical "Pattern" then apply the pattern to the large object and rotate only the pattern within the shape.

To retrieve the Color Panel go to the "Window" pulldown menu and choose "Color". The Color Panel should reappear. When you say "…stuck on selector" I assume you mean one of the "Selection Tools". Is it an arrow (black or white)? To draw something first make sure an unlocked layer is active in the "Layers" Panel. Then choose a drawing tool from the "Tools" panel. This could be any of the many drawing tools such as Pen, Line Segment, Ellipse or Rectangle tool. When you hover over the tool panel icons you'll see the tool name along with the keyboard shortcut. Learn the shortcuts so you can quickly choose a tool without going to the tool panel. "P" for Pen Tool, "L" for Ellipse Tool, "M" for Rectangle Tool are just a few. Just type the letter key, no modifier key is required.

I offered a solution for the question you stated. If your needs or more complex please explain further. Another solution is to temporarily lock all unselected elements (Shift-Option/Alt-Cmd+2). Then you can make any selection on unlocked element(s). This works regardless of how many groups/layers there may be in the file. Press "Option/Alt-Cmd+2" to unlock all. "Shift-Option/Alt-Cmd+3" will hide unselected elements. "Option/Alt-Cmd+3" will un-hide all. Edit: Had to correct my shortcuts. Search "Lock all deselected artwork" here.

It seems you would need to "Option/Alt" drag around the area you want to "de-select" instead of the area you want to "remain" selected.

The text is opaque, it just needs to be moved above the paint layer. Because the color splash group is set to "Multiply" it is darkening the gray text. If the text was a "rich black", like the paint brush, the color difference would not be visible.

Hi all. This may not be the solution you're after. I don't see a way to build it without an underlying shape. Use a Live Paint Object on top, with a rounded stroke, and add an outline with Miter corners. Careful selection will allow you to move the corners as one. Or you can just create the underlying shape from a duplicate of the Live Paint shape once you're satisfied with the image. I'll confess, unless corners are essential, I usually opt for rounded corners and call it good.

If you only use Illustrator a couple times a year it might make more sense to hire a freelancer or consider using a free or less expensive software solution. Without regular use you may find Illustrator frustrating to use.

The link requests "access permission". Just some guesses: Check the "opacity" setting on the fill color. This is accessible from the "Transparency" or "Appearance" panels. "Brushes" are controlled by the "Stroke" color. If you're using a predefined art brush the brush artwork itself may have transparency assigned to it. You would need to choose a different brush pattern, edit the brush artwork (by dragging it onto the artboard) or creating your own custom brush.

Is it possible the layer these items are on is set to "non-printing"? Or, perhaps the text elements have been set to "overprint" in the "Attributes" panel. This would not be apparent in the PDF. Select the text elements and check their settings in the "Attributes" panel. You can preview the separation plates using the "Separations Preview" panel.

When exporting, choose "Use Artboard". This will crop to the artboard instead of the artwork. For black, check "Appearance of Black" preferences. Export "Rich Black".

Is it possible Graphic Styles have been applied to layers that are not present in the new document? And do you have "Paste Remembers Layers" turned ON in Layer flyout menu? Either could be contributing to the issue.

Releasing the compound path will affect the image appearance. You can, however, "Object>Expand Appearance" to eliminate compound paths. This will "dumb down" the artwork and make it harder to edit, but it may be what you want in this case.

I used to discount the "rotate artboard" option in PS as a gimmick because I was taught in art school to maintain the position of my "canvas" to the real world. I now see the advantage of rotating the artboard in certain cases. These advantages are not exclusive to bitmap work. Just because the underlying artwork is vector-based does not mean the mechanics of free-form strokes is any different in AI or PS. AI just doesn't have the feature.

This is a start using custom brushes and stroke profiles. The .ai file is CS5 compatible and contains a number of custom brushes you might find useful when creating such effects without too much bother. Try typing the required width or height then "Cmd-Return". The other dimension will update proportionally. If I remember right this was the only way to do it in CS5.

There are several ways. Perhaps the easiest is to "Option" ("Alt" on PC) drag the color from one color swatch to the other. This can be done in the "Color" Panel or in the "Tools" panel where you see the "Fill and Stroke" icons.
