You do get maxSpace, which is defined as (IIRC) the largest amount that Photoshop is able to free up. You could try allocating half of that, as a rule of thumb, as a single block, then (as I previously suggested) doing intra-block allocation yourself.

On 32 bit Windows there should be no issue, as Mike points out.
On Mac, the SDK version is relatively unimportant, but the executable format is critical for compatibility.
* PS 3,4,5,6,7,CS require PowerPC PEF;
* CS2 is PPC Mach-O;
* CS3 and CS4 are Universal (PPC+Intel) Mach-O.

No. Windows plugins are ordinary Windows DLLs, Intel x86 architecture. Mac plugins come in a variety of executable formats, the latest (CS3,4) being a bundle containing a Mach-O binary with some combination of PowerPC and Intel architecture shared libraries.
But the bottom line is, a plugin binary for one platform is incompatible with the other.
It is, however, possible to write a plugin which can be built into executables for all Photoshop plugin platforms on Mac and Windows. Most of those on my site are like this: http://telegraphics.com.au/sw/

It depends how much PSD functionality you need. Most of it is not documented, but the basic stuff is.

Haha, thanks very much Microsoft.
After spending a day installing the latest Visual C++ 2008 Express and Windows SDK, etc, the build I made (linked above) is apparently still not problem free.
I have a user report that it crashes on XP SP3 + CS3.
Is it in fact possible to reliably support all permutations of Windows? Anyone know how?

I apologise that the 'psdparse' program has been unbuildable in the repo for a little while. I finally fixed it today after an unconscionable delay - version 2.5.3 should build fine on Linux, etc.
Perhaps it can help you debug your PSD editor.

Ditch Vista.
But which did you try? The recipe above, or reboot then reinstall? Those are the only 2 things I've heard of which fix the error.

I asked about this a while back but received no replies:
With the arrival of the WOW that is Vista, has anyone noticed new support issues? From my own suite of (open source) plugins, I receive zero support contacts from MacOS or XP users, but as soon as Vista arrived I began to hear about two problems:
* "plugin entry point could not be found" (apparently helped by restarting Windows and reinstalling the plugin)
* a higher incidence of out of RAM errors.
Has anyone else seen these issues? Are there any workarounds? Is anyone doing special Vista builds of their DLLs? If so, what's different?
I hope that "commercial secrecy" doesn't prevent a discussion of this issue.
