Thanks Colin and ClayUUID! That's simply what I needed. ...I'd appreciate some help with the terminology so I can find that kind of thing on my own: Isn't "window.open()" Javascript? I assumed I should be looking at the EasleJS site (EaselJS v0.8.2 API Documentation : EaselJS ) for syntax because I thought my Animate CC draws to the screen using the EaselJS canvas framework. (But I couldn't find anything that worked at that site.) When I'm looking for some syntax solution that works for my Animate CC + HTML5<canvas> project, should I just search for the Javascript solution? Thanks again!

Hello, I'm new and unfamiliar with the terms so I'm not getting what I need when searching the forum. This is probably a pretty straightforward issue, though. NOTE: I'm using Animate CC to export an HTML5<canvas> final product. (I believe this uses EaselJS) In my script in Animate, I'm first adding an Event Listener to 'MyInstance'. stage.MyInstance.addEventListener("click", linkToWebSite.bind(this)); //Adds event listener Then later in that script, I have a function that is called by that event: function zoomMilestone( someUrl ) { //here's where I want to take the 'someUrl' that is coming across and open that URL in a new browser window. }; What is the code that would go into that function above to open the url in a new window? Thanks much!

Hi All, I'm working on an HTML5 project. I have three layers (A, B and C) in my timeline. Each has a movie clip on it. A is top-most layer on the stage (so hides the other 2 movie clips). Can I make the movie clip on A appear behind C's movie clip according to the user's input? If so, is there any resource I could look at regarding that? (codePen, etc.) Thanks much!

This one is eluding me: How do I convert a string, like "myInstanceName" to something I can use (as the name of the instance) in a line of code like: stage.myInstanceName.addEventListener("click", myFunction.bind(this)); Thanks much!

Thanks Colin, I'm now able to name the MovieClipInstance using: stage.MovieClipInstance.name = "myInstanceName"; ...and then I can see that assigned name by doing: document.getElementById("testOutput").innerHTML = "InstanceName: "+ stage.MovieClipInstance.name ; but I want to get that name from within the function where I process the click (if I don't know which instance was clicked on). But maybe I'm not going about this correctly. Here's my intent: I have 12 buttons that will be clicked on. Each button will show a different dashboard when it's clicked on. I was thinking that, Instead of creating 11 different functions to show the dashboard associated with each button, I'd just make one function and, inside that function, determine which button was clicked on and find the correct dashboard to show. Am I going about this the wrong way? Thanks

I want to find the name of the movie clip clicked on by the user. Kglad, No I've not considered using the 'loader class'. (Don't know what it is.) So it sounds like there is no performance (or workflow) advantage to building the child animations in separate FLAs ...and either importing them or linking to them, correct? Thanks!

Hey Colin, I don't understand all your terminology but ultimately I'm just asking about the advantages of one workflow/ method over another: You wrote: The advantages of SWC are that ....if you happen to be publish for AIR mobile, the publishing happens a lot faster than if all the movieclips were in the main FLA. Are you saying that the final product will perform better/ faster for users using the SWC approach you describe..or just that the when testing the FLA during development, the publishing step will take less time? FYI: Even though I created a couple separate FLAs already, I like the idea of including everything in the main FLA because it seems simpler and easier to edit. In case this matters: I'm using an HTML5 and Animate + GSAP approach. The final product needs to be responsive (work well on desktop and in all mobile devices). Maybe a separate question, not sure: Is there a definite advantage to breaking a project down into separate components, having all your main AS3 scripts and content in the parent FLA (which might be called the 'stub') and linking to the other components/ child animations? If not, I think it might be better and simpler to just keep everything in one FLA until I understand more. Thanks!

Hi All, I'm learning so let me know if I'm asking the wrong question or if you'd recommend a different workflow. Inside my main FLA I have multiple layers and only one frame on the timeline. (I'm using AS3 to start and stop tweens and sounds ...so no need for timeline-based animation.) I want many little animations to play on cue at various places on the stage. I've created these small "child" animations in separate FLA files. I'm thinking I should import those child animations into the main FLA, make movie clips out of them then make them appear and play upon cue with my actionscript. (Or is it best to create them in the main FLA in the first place...or should I not even import them but keep them external and just link to them from the main FLA, if that's even an option, not sure). If creating the child animations separately and then importing them into my main FLA is the way to go, in what format should I export these child animations? Thanks much

Thanks much Colin. A couple remaining questions: If I'm working on complex, interactive animations for the web (responsive), shouldn't I be using Animate to export a HTML5 canvas final product? Why do I need AS3 GSAP tweens if my JS GSAP tweens worked in my project (when published via the html wrapper/ template method)? Is it because they won't work when exported as an SWF?

Ok. It sounds like, because I'm using GSAP with Animate I need to use the GSAP AS3 libraries/ tweens. Makes sense. I looked at the repository but I think I'm a bit over my head: Can you please refer me to some learning resources or tutorials on using these AS3 tweens? Thanks much!

I read in Animate help, that "To create all the files you need to put Animate content on the web, use the Publish command" Also I'm using Greensock tweens in my Animate project and the GSAP framework tutorial recommends this: "Unlike Flash content that was neatly wrapped up in a single .swf file, Adobe Animate CC needs to publish an HTML file that typically: Loads external JavaScript libraries (CreateJS). Creates the <canvas> where artwork will be rendered. Contains JavaScript that initializes your project. Loads custom JavaScript unique to your project (symbol definitions, animation code)." (Creating GSAP Templates for Adobe Animate CC | GreenSock ) ...So if I'm using Animate in that way, should I export as SWF? If so, then should keep the: import net.quip.sound.SoundSync; import net.quip.sound.CuePointEvent; ...in the FLA's frame script? Thanks ps. My project includes complex animation that will ultimately be viewed as responsive web content.

Well, I'm still stalled here: I resolved the 2 bugs in Stiller's Sound Sync demo (see link to his zip files below) that Colin pointed out earlier in this thread: https://forums.adobe.com/thread/2283273 ...and have it working as an Animate CC project. However, when I try to put that sound sync code, specifically this part: import net.quip.sound.SoundSync; import net.quip.sound.CuePointEvent; ...into the framescript of my Animate project, it crashes (blank page results when trying to test in browser). Probably, that's because those import lines need to be put into the html wrapper, right? So, I tried to put those lines into the template that my Animate project uses (inserting them at the end of my <head> section of my template) like this: <script> import net.quip.sound.SoundSync; import net.quip.sound.CuePointEvent; </script> But when I put this: var ss:SoundSync = new SoundSync(); ...into my Animate's FLA framescript it still crashes upon test. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Hi All, I'm new to Animate but worked in Flash previously. In Flash I used this method, developed by David Stiller, to create cue points in a sound file: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/author_bios/david_stiller.html Handling audio file cue points in ActionScript 2 and ActionScript 3 | Adobe Developer Connection It worked very well and I was able to cause events to happen at certain points in the soundtrack. How would I do that in Animate? Any tutorials available on that? Thanks much

Hi All, The line:
newChildObject = myMC;
produces an error ("Access of undefined property newChildObject") when my I have 'strict mode' checked in my Advanced Actionscript 3.0 Settings window but not when I have that unchecked. (I'm assuming that I'll need a 'var' in front of that variable to keep it from throwing an error in 'strict mode.' ) Should I keep my 'strict mode' checked? Will it help prevent some problems down the road (like in SWF versions)? Thanks

Hi All, Have others found that sending a value (stored in a variable) from a parent (main timeline) to a child (movie clip) fails some of the time but only when the movie is running as a .swf (it never fails when testing in authoring)? My main timeline's actionscript has: XYZ_ChildMC.variableA = false; //parent talks to child movie clip In the child MC script: import fl.video.*; var variableA; function completeHandler(e: fl.video.VideoEvent): void { if (variableA == false) { myFLV.seek(0); myFLV..play(); } } This seems to fail about 5% of the time when running/rerunning the .swf in a browser. Anyone have a similar experience? Thanks
