@CJButler We have artists in four different countries in my day-job company - England, America, India and the Netherlands. We have an installed user base of around 47 clients overall and this bug is easy to reproduce on every client (we did a quick check a week or so ago). Win10x64, no tablets, no user modifications - just vanilla installation via Creative Cloud. This is in v25.0.0 but it was also in v24.7.1, v24.7, and v24.6. If we downgrade to v24.5 the problem goes away. It affects the hand tool for panning (hold space, click left mouse, drag the canvas, let go of space, let go of left mouse, and the mouse still drags the canvas). It does seem to be speed-relate. If you very slowly and deliberately perform those actions, it only does it 50% of the time. If you work at "normal" speed, it does it 100% of the time. It also applies to the marquee tool - left-click and hold, drag a rectangle, let go of the left mouse button and it's still dragging the rectangular selection. In this case it's not speed-related and can be reproduced 100% of the time. Both started in v24.6, neither present in v24.5. I'd be looking in the check-in notices for v24.6 to start investigating what got checked in that affected either the left-mouse click or space bar function.

I think for all of us it’s really easy to reproduce. No tablet required. Open a document, zoom in. Press and hold the space bar to pan around and let go of the space bar and the function always sticks on. You have to click the mouse to “unstick” the hand. For me it’s Windows 10 but this happens in the last two versions of photoshop for me both at home on windows 10 and at work on windows 11.

You need to go all the way back to 24.0.1 to get rid of it which is ridiculous. The marquee tool and hand tool both suffer the same problem - they both "stick". I'm currently working all the way back in CS6 as it was arguably the last stable version. Since then it's just got more and more buggy and slower and slower even on the highest-end machines.

Since changing to PSv25.0.0, every document I save (note: NOT export, just a regular file->save) now generates a .c2paws file alongside it. I discovered them today - I have hundreds that have appeared in my folders. As I underatand it these are "content credentials" files except in my preferences, and in the document properties, content credentials are both disabled. This happens for all filetypes that I use (jpg, tif, psd, tga, bmp) When going back to v24.x, this does not happen. This is like the "GUDE" file issue back in March - which was a total PITA and took forever to get solved. Can confirm this is still very very broken in v25.0.0 I'm going back to my old copy of CS6 for the time being - it was the last truly stable version of Photoshop and it's faster in every operation.

Can confirm that not only is the hand tool broken in v25.0.0, but now the problem has spread to both marquee selection and the lasso tool. For me, Photoshop is now utterly unusable in it's current state. I can't pan the document window, or make selections, and as reported in another post, working with 8bit images has utterly broken transparency layers, blend layers and the ability to do text. Given the atrocious cost of licensing, I would have hoped that they'd actually spend time to fix game-breaking bugs like this. As it is, I'm going back to my old copy of CS6 for the time being. It's faster in every way and was the last truly 'stable' version of Photoshop. Adobe really shouldn't be surprised at the quantity of piracy of their old products when they just break more and more core features with each new release.

Everyone clearing their preferences and trying to find workarounds: this is a bug. It's not up to us to try to hack our way around it. It's up to Adobe to fix it. They broke it in v24. It isnt hard to go back through the code checkins and find out how to fix it. Has this actually ever been reported as a bug or are we just 8 pages deep in people complaining on a forum that adobe doesn't look at? Because that's not how you get stuff fixed.

Ugh - the same thing happens with 'merge layers' too. Create two new layers, paint in them, then merge them. The outline of the combine layers goes white until you hide and un-hide the top multiply layer. Also did not happen in the most previous version. They've changed something and it's messed up multiply layers.

@davescm also worth pointing out - for what it's worth - I've been using Photoshop since the Silicon Graphics days in 1989. So I'm not exactly a newbie. That's why I notice when stuff breaks so obviously like this on a version change.

Drag any of the text layers around and you'll see what I mean. Go back to an older version of photoshop and it doesn't happen. If you hide the multiply layer - the top-most layer - it also doesn't happen. It's not limited to this file either - it's any file with a multiply layer in it - anything I drag below that layer now causes this artifact. And again, in older versions this didn't happen.

Ok all those done. New clean studio driver installed, killed the preferences and reset it, even nuked photoshop completely and did a full clean install and the problem still exists. So this is an actual bug, not something that can be cured with preferences.

@davescm So I upgraded my graphics card to an Nvidia RTX3060i and unchecked the "old gpu" option and the problem came back - any time a multiply layer is visible, I can't move anything underneath it without the blocking artifacts seen in my original video. In the last two versions of Photoshop - currently on v24.7 - there's been a really irritating issue where zooming one window when it's on top of another causes the underlying document to flip to higher priority. To reproduce, have separate windows per document. Expand one so it fills the main Photoshop view. Get the other document over the top in it's window and zoom it. The underlying one will flip to highest priority, hiding the one you're trying to zoom. Attached video shows this in action.

Thanks. I did a clean install of the latest studio drivers but that didn't help so I'll stick with the "older GPU mode" for the time being. Maybe now the crypto market has imploded, I might be able to actually buy a modern GPU for less than the price of a car. 😄

The "older GPU mode" worked right away. Checked that and it's now behaving as I would expect. The GPU was bought Dec 2016 so that sort of matches the description of the checkbox. Note: this did not happen in the previous version.
The attached movie shows the problem. The top-most layer in my layer stack is a multiply layer - it has the UV's on it for a 3D model I'm working on. If I pick and drag anything around in the layers beneath this multiply layer, everything gets corrupted and does not revert to a 'clean' document view until I hide and then unhide the top-most multiply layer. It seems to be provoked by the presence of text layers.

v24.4 appeared for me today in N.America. In my case, the GUDE log file issue is now fixed. I can double-click image files and have them open Photoshop without that extra file being created. Back to how it always was (on this item at least :-))

@Rob Ainscough Great recommends. Sadly you know what'll happen next. Adobe will offer Affinity a suitcase full of cash and it will suddenly become part of Adobe. This is exactly what happened with Allegorithmic Substance Painter. It's now part of Adobe and it's suffered very very noticeably in the last 18 months, gradually getting slower and more bloated and more buggy.

@LHClub No it hasn't. Hacks, workarounds and all the other hoops everyone is suggesting we jump through are not a solution to a fundamental issue. Adobe broke the basics of how windows works. You don't need or expect locked, junk files to be created when you double-click a file to open the associated application. Until Adobe fix it, it's not "solved".

Bear in mind that there are millions of users who don't use lightroom or bridge because it's regarded as bloat. This is basic 101 windows we're talking about here - we should be able to - as we have for the last 20 years - double click a file and have it open photoshop without littering our machines with gude logs. It would be different if they were cleaned up on exit but they're not. This is a bug - it needs to be fixed.
