Thanks for your help Jane. As I said I was not sure of the terminology to use. I have been using PS for 25 years to edit photos, among other things, and I am very proficient. I have never bothered to learn all the terminology for other aspects unless the need arises. I have now solved my problem and that you again for your help.

I have been away for a week and had shut my computer down. I have just arrived home and started the computer up and opened PS. The whole workspace has changed. (I updated to latest version just before I went away - 26.3.0). When I first installed the upgrade the first thing I did was to go to 'application frame' in 'Window' to clear the workspace fill and make it transparent. so I could see my desktop. (I'm using a Mac)
Now the application frame is floating in the screen, filled with black, yet the menu bar at the top is fixed on my desktop, seemingly unattached to the main application frame. If I maximise the application frame I can't see the menu bar!!!
Does that make sense? I'm not sure how to descibe this. I've never seen this before. I've attached some screenshots to help explain!

I have just upgraded PS to the latest version and now I only have one scratch disk. How do I assign another one? I had two in the previous version. Holding down command/option when I start up does not help. Using Mac Sequoia 15.2

I like to make my own brushes and they save automatically to the brushes palette. If Photoshop is shut dowm and restarted my brushes are nowhere to be found. How can I transfer them to my 'Brushes' folder on my hard-drive?

Many thanks for your reply D Fosse. I have the information you requested but I want to reiterate that this problem has only been occurring for the last couple of weeks or so. (Has there been an update in that time?) Large files have previously been slow of course, (maybe up to 10 secs?), but not nearly as bad as at present. These are 3 examples of my files: File 1: LDF 933.3MB 196 layers 11 groups Inc. Smart Objects File 2: PSD 224.4MB 223 layers 29 groups No Smart Objects File 3: PSD 437.6MB 17 layers 1 Smart Object Opening times vary but can be as long as 12 secs Closing times vary but can be as long as 27 secs I don’t have PSD/PSB compression enabled. Firstly, I don’t know how to do that, secondly, I have never had the need to do that and thirdly, I would be wary of compression degrading files. All my images are 300dpi Many thanks, Heather

The crop tool has just decided to stop working. Whether I press 'C' or select it from the tool bar there is nothing. I have just reinstalled PS 25.6.0 and that hasn't fixed the problem. This happened out of the blue. There was nothing changed or added to my computer previous to this occurence. Please help. It is rather a vtial tool for my work.

I've managed to install version 25.4.0!!!! I don't know how it happened. I thought I'd try again, so I uninstalled the earlier version I installed this morning and gave it another go and it worked. I don't know if it had anything to do with installing/uninstalling the earlier version but who cares! Thanks to all who replied.
