I FINALLY FOUND IT!! Jesus H - this problem has been giving me a headache for months... figured it out. Go to the Appearance tool box - click on the three bars - uncheck the New Art Has Basic Appearance. Life seems to be good again. Praise the lord... Do not mistake the recovery function with Autosave. It's not meant to be Autosave and it doesn't work like autosave.
If it works, then it will only kick in after a crash. But if the crash happened while it was saving, your file is most likely toast. The only reliable measure is to save your files.
Save early.
Save often
Save multiple versions, because if your only file gets corrupted, then it will not work that you have saved every 5 minutes.
Save to your desktop.
If you are on a Mac, turn on Time Machine
Turn on File recovery and if it can give you back the last 20 minutes, then enjoy it.
Turn off "Background saving" in the Illustrator preferences, because it has the potential to ruin files while saving them.

Hi, thanks for the hint. No, I have not tested the new feature. I will be happy to use it, once it fully works in a regular environment (and hopefully does not cost additional credits from the AI account...). I do appreciate Adobe's efforts to tackle day to day issues, trying to make things easier - but given my experience with beta features, I had my share of testing in the past. I rather would like to see an easier to use eco system, with less flaws and more stability.

What is your OS?
Is everything (OS, drivers, Visual C++ Redistributables) up-to-date?
Have you tried completely removing After Effects via the Creative Cloud Cleaner tool and reinstalling it?
It sounds like the key "PreferExternalManifest" cannot be found in the Windows registry. You could manually add it in and see if that helps, though I do not really recommend meddling around with the registry - unless you know what you're doing.
