I thought it could be the action to save and close the file I made was messing it up. But today, it works normal, no added -1 to the filename. Sorry to have bothered you here, but the problem solved itself mysteriously.

I tested it with a photo I never opened in Photoshop and it added the -1 tot the filename. It is annoying.

When I open a rawfile from Lightroom Classic 9.2 in Photoshop, the filename stays the same. I have set this in Lightrooms preferences to work like this. If I open the rawfile as a smart object in Photoshop, there is -1 added to the filename. This is annoying for me because if I save the file, the filename is not the same and that is what I want. How can a get Lightroom to stop adding -1 (or -2 etc) to the filename when opening the file as smart object in Photoshop?

Thank you JJMack, this is the real anwer!! I have been trying everything suggested all over the internet and uninstalled and reinstalled photoshop and wacom drivers a zillion times, but never holding the pen to the tablet to test it!! Now after your tip, I see changing the settings really works.

Unfortunately updating Nvidia drivers didn't work. ACR 10.3 works for the moment so I will leave it like it is for now and hope the problem will be solved with the next update of camera raw. Thanks for all your help,

After I found the problem, one of the suggestions was to update my graphic card driver, which I did. It didn't solve the problem. My guess is the problem is in the CameraRaw 10.4 in combination with the drivers installed for the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB or some Windows updates. I have tried again to use the CameraRaw 10.4 but the problem is still there. So for now I will keep the CameraRaw 9.12.1 so I can use most of the CameraRaw in Photoshop and if I want to use the newer functions, I will have to do them in Lightroom. Hope Adobe can solve this in the next update of CameraRaw.

Bingo!! I downloaded CameraRaw 9.12.1_win and installed it and bingo, Photoshop works as a charm again!! So there is definitely something wrong with the CameraRaw 10.4 in combination with my PC or Photoshop version. It is however a pity Adobe only offers a camera raw installer with the latest Camera Raw included. It would be better is you could download whichever version so if something goes wrong, you have the option to install a previous version.

Thanks Terris, the chat is closed now, I will try tomorrow. I have read a lot of people had sort of the same problems on windows with the Camera Raw 10.2. So I think it has something to do with the latest Camera Raw. I will look for an older version and see if it will solve my problem.

I am sure my nef files are ok, Photoshop could not open one of your nefs either Also raw files from Canon and Fuji won't open. I can open them perfectly in Lightroom. Adobe Camera Raw will not open, whatever I try. Photoshop version is 19.1.15 Camera Raw filter is 10.4.0976

Yes I was able to open the nef files from my Nikon D750 before and yes I tried the context menu to open the nef files. I want my nef files and don't want to convert them to dng. Open as doesn't work either. My work flow is importing the nefs in Lightroom and do most of my editing there. Sometimes I just want to open a nef from the explorer or Photoshop and because ACR doesn't open I have to open them first in Lightroom and I can't use the Camera Raw filter in Photoshop.

Today I uninstalled all CC apps and removed all settings, restarted the pc and ran the AdobeCreativeCloudCleanerTool and restarted again. Then I reinstalled the CC desktop application and Photoshop. I started Photoshop and tried to open a nef file and I got the same problem, not opening Adobe Camera Raw and the message: Could not complete your request because of a program errorCould not complete your request because of a program error. I am getting a bit desperate. The only way I can open a raw file is through Lightroom Classic.

Normally I have the .nef set to be opened in Windows Photo Viewer, changing it makes no difference.

My situation:
PC Windows 10 up to date
CC apps are all up to date.
Problem:
Can't open a raw file by clicking file -> open and click on a raw file.
jpg of psd file open fine in Photoshop.
Opening a raw file from the explorer by right clicking and choose open with, I get the same fault message
Opening from Bridge in any way doesn't work either
The message I get when trying to open a raw file is:
Could not complete your request because of a program error.
Using the Camera Raw filter in Photoshop doesn't work either, I get the message:
Could not complete the Camera Raw Filter command because of a program error
In Lightroom if I open the same raw file with Ctrl E the file opens nicely in Photoshop.
What I tried:
starting with no plugins
reset the preferences
starting windows in safe mode
used the (latest) camera raw installer
uninstalled and reinstalled Photoshop

I think maybe it has something to do with Adobe Camera Raw in Photoshop. I tried to use the Camera Raw filter in Photoshop and I get the message: Could not complete the Camera Raw Filter command because of a program error On a few tries it worked but most of the times it failed and got the above message.
