FYI - in Windows Ctrl + R opens a Windows Run Box, and does not load files into Camera RAW when Bridge is open. I had to use the intuitive menu to get them all loaded into Camera RAW. Bridge was actually slower. Both tests were done with 391 RAW files after fresh reboots. 1 - Having Photoshop invoke Adobe Camera RAW after I have it open all the files and then hacing Camera RAW save the JPGs. This took 11-minutes and six seconds. 2 - Having Bridge open all the files and then having Bridge open Camera RAW and then having Camera RAW save the files. This took 11-minutes and 57 seconds. In addition, Bridge was a little clunky (mouse was slow to respond) as it was loading all the files. I did not have this problem with Photoshop. The reboot did speed things up though, as with my first Photoshop invocation of Camera RAW, it averaged 2.19 seconds to process each RAW file, but with this set, it averaged 1.7. Don't know if the way that I did things consumed more resources, though. I have a paid Adobe subscription, so I installed Bridge from within the Creative Cloud App. So now, the only way to open Bridge is through Creative Cloud, and I saw Creative Cloud in the task tray as a running process as I was converting the files. Had I just downloaded the free Bridge outside of CC, would I have been able to launch it without having opened up Creative Cloud?

If I select multiple *.NRW files in explorer and double click on one of them, only that file opens in Adobe Camera RAW, and I can't otherwise figure out how to open Adobe Camera RAW by itself, or how to open multiple files within it once I have it open, so the only way to accomplish what I needed was to have opened Photoshop, and then open the multiple files from within Photoshop which then launched Adobe Camera RAW. Once everything showed up in the bottom "film panel" view, I then hit ctrl +a to select all, and started the conversion process. So, perhaps the way I did this was to have Photoshop "host" Adobe Camera RAW. Once I started the process, I letf the PC alone. There may have been two or three Microsoft Edge windows open in the bakground, but nothing was otherwise running. I love the increased speed. You saved my tons of work and hours! However, I do welcome any tweaks in the process to speed things up further. Completely understand if there are none. While we are here, is there any way to get this forum to auto-spell check? Not a global PC issue, as other forums auto-spell check for me with the Edge browser.

We have a winner! This process took 30 minutes and 54-seconds to make high-quality JPGs from the same 848 RAW files that the Photoshop image processing script took 57 minutes and 31-seconds to make.

I tried this, but when I open multiple files within Adobe Camers RAW and try to save, it only saves the first file. In any event, I was able to accomplish what I needed by: Photoshop - file - scripts - image processor - select the input and output - change the image quality to 12 and run. The process took 57 minutes and 31-seconds to process 847 Nikon RAW - *.NRW files. This works out to roughly 3.84 seconds per image. So, I got what I wanted, BUT, if I figure out how to do this another way, will it be faster? Edit - from another reply, looks like Adobe Camera RAW can do this faster. I just have to figure out how to get it to process multiple files.

I'll try this in a day or so with more than 400 files to see if it works.

I'm new to this, and when I wrote the script with the Adobe recorder function, I didn't bother to close the files. So, with my workflow, I either have to keep depressing "N" when asked to save each file when I try to exit Adobe, or use task manager to forcr quit the app. I'll re-write the script to close the files first.

I'm using the latest Photoshop 2025 on a Windows 10 laptop. I have a script that I use with file - automate - batch which converts RAW files to jpgs. It will only work with 400 files. If I have more than 400 files in the source directory, after it processes the 400th file, the process stops with an error messgae - something like "too many open files." Is ther some way to increase the limit?

@Sameer K - Same behavior with previous versions. I'm not taking the time to try a beta version. Same behavior whether the folder is on an external drive or a local drive. I do normal things like adjust contrast and crop. One trobleshooting step I took was to try and find the process holding up the file to kill it, but I was unable to do so. In the past, I've played around with killing explorer alltogether and then re-launching a new instance. A few times, this freed up the folder, but now, it no longer does. I'm using the latest Photoshop 2025 (as well as the latest suite of other products) on a Windows 10 laptop. I use Adobe Camera RAW and then Photoshop to edit RAW files. Often, I want to rename a directory where I've saved files to. However, even when I completely exit out of Photoshop, Windows will not allow me to rename the folder, as it claims it is in use. And, yes, when I try to rename the folder, I don't have any files opened within it, and aren't otherwise in it. The only solution is to reboot. Why the heck is Adobe holding onto the folder locks after I exit the program, and how can I prevent this from happening in the future?

You do indeed also deserve credit and thanks. The other responder's answer got more attention from me, as he included a screenshot of the setting. I also marked your initial reply as "Correct Answer."

I'm using the latest Photoshop 2015 version with Windows 10. I’m getting better at making jpgs from RAW files, but am not always 100% satisfied with the results, so I always save the RAW files that I can go back to at a later date when my Photoshop skills have gotten better. I of course, save the associated XMP files so I can see what edits I made with Adobe Camera Raw, however, once I start making changes to the NRW in Photoshop after I hit “open” within Adobe Camera RAW, unless I manually keep a spreadsheet or some other document of the changes I make, I’ll later have no idea what I did. For example, I may select the subject and then increase the brightness by 31%, the contrast by 62%, and then increase the saturation by 12%, then select the inverse and decrease the brightness by 24% before saving the jpg. So, if I later want to see if I can make a better jpg from the file, I’d like to have the changes logged somewhere that I can use as a reference. I’m well aware that I can save the PSD file so I can start where I had off, but this is not what I’m looking for. I just tried an exercise like the above and opened the history panel. It had a section for brightness/contrast, but didn’t bother to show how much I changed the brightness and contrast, and was there any way to export the history. It would be a major pain to have to take the time to manually document all the Photoshop steps I take, and a screen recorder isn’t a practical solution. I can’t be the only person who wants this logging. Is there any way to accomplish this natively from within Photoshop, or perhaps with some third-party utility? To be clear, I want to export the detailed steps to an easy to read file.

This is a duplicate of my reply two posts up with some edits. Mods, Can somebody please edit that post and replace it with the below? Ty I figured it out!! Step 1 duplicate layer. Step 2 – unselect the original background layer and only select the layer named “Background Copy.” Step 3 – remove background on the layer named “Background Copy.” Step 4 – Select the layer named “Background Copy” and make adjustments. Note - one must select the layer icon on the left in order for all the adjustments to be available. Step 5 – duplicate the original background layer again. Lasso around the rotated subject in the layer named “Background Copy 2”. Right click around the selection – content aware fill. Apply – OK Step 6 – Make edits to Background Copy 2. Step 7 – Select the layers called “Background Copy 2” and “Background Copy.” This shows both edits. Step 8 – save as jpg. I very much appreciate your perseverance. I think this took so long because you had assumed that I knew some Photoshop basics, such as what a selection is. I did not. Now, I feel like making an instructional YouTube video on the process, (😊) since the ones I saw didn’t specifically outline the steps.

I can follow the first step by duplicating the oringinal background layer and removing the background from that copy, however, when I attempt your second step -select - modify, when the original background layer is selected, the "modify" option is not selectable. Please see the attached and let me know what I'm missing or doing wrong.

Here is my workflow with screenshots. Sorry if this is a little overkill, but I don’t want to miss anything. The original photo with my complete PS layout: https://imgur.com/V64kNs2 I then hit CTRL + J to get the second layer – Layer 1 and this is my layout: https://imgur.com/33G5idy I then select subject and this is my layout: https://imgur.com/vdz7PzB Then I hit CTRL + J and this is my layout: https://imgur.com/JR99I2L Now, If I only select layer 2, I see the bird completely isolated from the background, however, the “inverse” button is not functional. See this as proof: https://imgur.com/tJEtHKC The “inverse” button isn’t functional with either of the other layers selected by itself either, but I think I need it to work with the bird isolated. So, I’m at the point where I can make edits to the bird, but I need to isolate the background as a separate layer, made edits to that layer and then move the edited bird back into that layer so I can save it as a jpg. I could also select layer 2 and layer 1 or layer 2 and background, and I now see the edited bird in the original background. Pls see the attached. https://imgur.com/JCEBuu0 So, the only thing I don’t have is the original background isolated as a layer, so I can edit the sky background by itself, then select layer 2 and the edited background layer, and then save the jpg. What do I need to do to accomplish this? Regarding - Did you destroy the original image in the file with the isolated bird? If you kept the original image (as the hidden Background Layer for example) you can duplicate it and use a Selection based on the clipped bird to remove the bird from the background (content-Aware Fill, Generative Fill, …). The locked background layer is present. I already removed the bird from the background. I shouldn’t have to do this again. Also, after I’ve created the layers, when I go to the first copy or original background, I am no longer able to select the subject, and I should not have to use aa hand tool to do the work or selecting it. Pls see the attached.

I realize this has been asked numerous times and there is a lot of documentation and videos on the subject, but I am unable to follow anything and accomplish what I need. I’m running the latest Photoshop 2024 build under Windows 10. I need to separate a bird subject and a background, then perform separate edits on each, then put the edited subject back into the edited background exactly where it originally was, and then save it as a jpg. I’ve made some progress by following this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=teqxB8Cr89E&ab_channel=JamarAlexisPhotography I got up to the 4:02 mark, when the “inverse” selection on my Photoshop wasn’t available. These are the steps I took with an image. Ctrl J for a new layer – select the new layer – select – subject – select - modify -expand – expanded accordingly. Ctrl J which created layer 2. Where I am so far is that I can select layer 2 by itself which is the bird isolated against a checkered background. I am able to edit the bird by itself and save the jpg, but this is not what I need. After I edit the bird, I then need to isolate the background in its own layer and put the edited bird back in the new background where It was in the first place. What am I missing here? Why doesn’t isn’t my inverse menu item selectable. What additional steps do I need to take to accomplish what I need?

I got the full automation working after also recording the last step of me saving the jpg as the highest quality. There are times when I come home from birdwatching sessions and have a lot of sets of 7-shot bursts that that I’m going to want to crop. You have no idea how much post-processing time you saved me. In addition, the output of similar shots will now be standardized. Have a good day!

I saw those descriptions when hovering over the options. I had oiginally followed your instructions by recording the action set and then running the variant of your script with this code: // Change ALL to NO to disable interactivity when batching var interactive = DialogModes.NO; I then stopped the recording. How do I need to tweak the process in order to get the automation to run to auto-save the highest quality jpgs in the destination directory, using the original file names, and without any prompts?

Getting closer. Now, when I use file - automate - batch and select the batch set and options, it runs, however, for each jpg in the source directory, I am prompted for the file name, and it defaults to a PSD extension which I have to change to jpg. Then, the jpg options come up for the save. Selecting either or both of the Override action "open" and Override action "save as" selectons just disables the output. The "save as" button on the bottom lest if grayed out. I want this to run and auto-save everything as the highest quality (12) jpg in the destination directory using whatever naming convention I choose in the menu without any prompts. How can I accomplish this?

I copied over two scripts to the appropriate directory. One as written, and the other changing All to NO for batch processing as per your instructions here: Change ALL to NO to disable interactivity when batching var interactive = DialogModes.ALL; I've been searching for a while, but can't figure how to batch process using this script. It would be easier to have a form open and allow me to choose a source directory and destination one. I found documentation regarding recording an action, but when I open the action window, the play button is disabled. How do I setup batch processing with this. One I input the data, I would of course want everything auto-saved.
