Jqqerry, J E L, kevafef, cifil and other valuable Photoshop users,
Here are some Q & A based on a recent forum questions.
Q1) Is the Windows crash on Object Selection Tool and Select Subject solved by the NVIDIA new driver?
A: Yes, see this link: Re: P: Photoshop 23.0.2 Crashes when working with paths - Windows
Q2) Are we going to keep Preferences > Image Processing > Selections Processing options even though NVIDIA’s new driver will fix the crash? Why?
A: Yes.
Reasons: We will keep the option because at any time, a GPU vendor or OS could release an update that breaks our software and it would be totally outside of our control. And this option could help users.
This is because machine learning is not a mature technology and is constantly evolving, with researchers discovering better and faster ways of doing some of the things we want to do. As we attempt to add more “smarts” to Photoshop to make people’s day-to-day workflows easier, there’s always the risk that the technology isn’t supported correctly by the operating system or the hardware drivers.
Q3) What is the difference between Preferences > Image Processing > 'Select Subject Processing' and 'Selections Processing' in the current Photoshop Beta Prime?
A: For the Nvidia driver-related crash or slowness on Object Selection Tool and Select Subject, you can use the ‘Selections Processing’ option from the current Beta Prime. Of course. The best way is to update your Nvidia drivers.
‘Select Subject Processing’ is specific to Select Subject only and allows you to choose how this task is processed (on device or cloud processing). As stated in the preferences, processing on your device is usually faster, but using cloud processing may give you more detailed results.
If you are connected to the network, take advantage of using the ‘Cloud (Detailed results)’ option. Usually, you’ll get a better result.
If you are not connected to the network or you need to get the result quicker, use the ‘Device (Quicker results)’ option.
Q4) Even though using the ‘Faster’ option in preferences or updating to the new NVIDIA driver, it seems like Object Selection Tool is slower than the 2020 - 2021 version.
A: Old Object Selection Tools have less functionality. It’s a trade-off of having more functionality vs. speed.
If you really want to go back to the old Object Selection Tool, you can just use Object Selection Tool > Mode: Rectangle or Lasso. (Additionally, you can set the gear icon menu > Object Finder Mode: Manual Refresh, Never Show Overlay if you prefer)

Thanks for your patience!
Until we have a chance to include the Preferences > Image Processing in the release version, you can install the Photoshop Beta version from Creative Cloud > Beta apps > Photoshop (Beta) to improve the slowness. You can install Photoshop (Beta) version side by side with your existing release version of photoshop. In Photoshop (Beta), go to Preferences > Image Processing. Use Selections Processing: ‘Faster’
(You will need to restart Photoshop to see the changes).
And if you are experiencing a crash on using the Object Selection Tool or Select Subject on Windows, please update the Nvidia Graphics drivers to the latest version, which came out recently, and let us know if that helps to resolve the crash issue. For steps, see this:https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/known-issues.html#app-crash-with-tools

Hi @Jqqerry
Thanks for trying out Photoshop Beta and providing feedback.
As you noticed, the new toggle option is trying to mitigate 2 different kinds of problems.
Preferences > Image Processing > Selections Processing
1) users facing Crashes on Nvidia graphic cards - Recommend using “More stable”
2) users facing Slowness on Nvidia graphic cards - Recommend using “Faster”
Nvidia is planning to release a new driver near future and that is supposed to fix the crash.
The Photoshop development team is trying to address or at least provide a workaround to the most critical issues to the users as much as possible and as soon as possible. And continue to optimize the performance whenever possible.

It could happen to all Nvidia graphics cards. A workaround is available on the current Photoshop (Beta) version from Creative Cloud Desktop > Beta apps. Make sure to use Version 23.5.0: 20220901.m.1877 or later.
We have introduced a new Preference to provide options to the users.
To access the new Preference: Preferences > Image Processing > Toggle the Selections Processing “Faster” or “More Stable”
If you see slowness, try the "Faster" option to see if it improves the performance.

For those who are really struggling with the speed, you could switch back to Ps 23.4, if the other updates are less important for you. Nvidia driver has a bug that is causing PS to crash while using the Object Selection Tool and Select Subject so we moved the processing to CPU in order to reduce the number of crashes while Nvidia tries to fix the bug. Again we are actively working on this to improve the situation. Thank You for your patience!
