I do it to search many docs at a time (some of them a hundred pages), and to let customers know I am paying attention. Customer: We don't lowercase that word. Ever. Me: In the last six months, in 214 documents and about 8000 pages, it was lowercase 329 times and uppercase 485. Customer: How did you figure that out? Me: That's why I make the big bucks.

I've been using Acrobat's indexing pretty much since it was introduced and through several Macs (I'm an old Mac user since the MacPlus). This problem is on a new MacBook Pro M4 I bought a few days ago and freshly installed Adobe products.. My attempt at creating a full-text index ended up with this: Starting rebuild of Index : /Users/tlmurray/Documents/AcrIdx/Amazon.pdx Error: Could not create folder : /Users/tlmurray/Documents/AcrIdx/Amazon Error: Index build failed Deleting files from current index Error: Index build failed Permissions are the same here as they are for a new folder: Even though these are the same as any other new folder, the problem looks like permissions. Any ideas? Thanks.

InDesign is set to English. But you are missing a key point: This is not a language-based hyphenation rule that applies to breaking a word., nor is it a function of the hyphenation zone or the other hyphenation settings. This is InDesign treating your plain typed hyphen as though it were a nonbreaking hyphen (Option+Command+hyphen) and therefore, not breaking after a typed hyphen in a two-word compound. Oh, it will happily break one of the words -- just not at the hyphen you actually want!

I'm getting that as well, and this is crazy. There is no reason that InDesign does not break well-defined at the hyphen. And to add insult to injury, it looks atrocious when there is plenty of room for "well-". There might be some argument for breaking a word at a syllable and relating it to the hyphenation zone and such, but when you type a hyphen by hand? Really? In a compound word???

Amal: Hmm, no. Not only am I not going to bother, but I'm a bit perturbed you asked . . . which is treating this as though it were something new. It has been around for years and years, and I would bet my left lung that Adobe's own employees have seen it. Adobe needs to rip through Acrobat in general to eliminate the need for Rosetta anyway, and maybe all that re-engineering will fix it.

It's definitely NOT the first item. The problem has been around for years, and you can bet that Adobe employees have seen it on their own computers.

I have a script to insert the file name into the metadata's property "title" field, but I am looking to clear it. Does anyone know where to find one? I have around 200 files. I have a Mac and a PC, but the Mac is my daily tool. Thanks.

Well, yes, read the help, but in my case, InDesign's anchor-in-first-line behavior is antithetical to my previously gained knowledge. I am 66 and grew up with PageMaker, QuarkXPress, Word, FrameMaker, WordPerfect, etc., and watched the technique of runaround and anchors develop, so when I first experienced the InDesign behavior, I was completely surprised. I firmly believe other users who are knowledgeable in anchors and runaround would also be surprised. [I see a touch of gray in your brows, so I would think you would agree?] Regarding "text flow has to follow an anchor point. It's just a basic rule of the layout process," you may have used apps that allow an anchor to be almost anywhere, from adjacent to the anchored object [read: the very same sentence]" to sitting on a different page . . . so "text flow has to follow an anchor point" is anything but a basic rule. I would caution against saying anything is a "rule" in DTP.

Regardless of the fact that the "fix" does not work, I have to smirk at the mention (in the details link), ". . . eliminates extra space needs." Yes, thanks, Adobe, that you realized how those 18 pixels soaked up SO much valuable on-screen real estate.

The reply of "the issue is not reproducible..." is meaningless and the need to know the OS and Acrobat version is useless. The fact that the problem is found scattered throughout the internet for many years makes it clear that the problem is inherent to Acrobat. You typed your thing in 2015, I am typing this in 2024, and it happens to me on my Mac once in a while, so yeah, something is wrong with Acrobat's code. Maybe when Adobe realizes Acrobat needs to be rewritten to account for Rosetta, it will be fixed.

If everything you are using -- OS, apps -- is out dated, then no, you would not have not been alerted. The warning came out in 2021. It is not the fault of the makers of the OS or the apps that you did not stay up to date.

Legacy EPS files continue to be supported in various vector graphics applications regardless of what Microsoft or Apple do with their operating systems. By @Bobby Henderson Well, yes, but it is not an operating system issue. This is at the application level. When you want clarity at the wide level, you should go with a vector (depending on the graphic, of course).

Regarding EPS, Microsoft stopped importing EPS some time ago. Their suggestion is to convert to SVG or EMF; see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/support-for-eps-images-has-been-turned-off-in-office-a069d664-4bcf-415e-a1b5-cbb0c334a840#

I want to say I found one, but I have not. I don't use the free Reader because I use Acrobat's indexing feature many times a day, and I have not found another application that will do that. PDFify is okay for opening a PDF and doing OCR -- a bit better than Acrobat, actually -- and it can delete pages and save, but it doesn't even have an internal search feature.

Similar to yours and Alain's comments, it has seemed for years that Adobe is more concerned with making headlines with cool new, fancy bells-and-whistles than it is with making sure its baseline products work properly and supporting the user base that got them the size they are today.

You should certainly realize by now that OS and Acrobat versions are beside the point, as this issue has been going on for years. It deserves Adobe's attention and a fix, especially given what users pay for a license. We're not talking about an app that was programmed by a 30-year-old living in his mom's basement.

Illustrator has the setting (default is 2 points), but what is it used for? I've tried adding a large (visible) number (such as 14 points), setting type on a fixed grid, seeing if my baseline clicks changed increments in the Character palette, etc. In short, I don't see any change in behavior. What is it for?

InDesign 19.1 on Mac with Sonoma 14.2.1 With no document open, I set the Character panel and Paragraph Styles > Basic Paragraph > Font Family to Georgia. Now, when I exit InDesign and relaunch, a new document defaults to Georgia. So far so good. The problem is that when I open a doc missing a font, the default family is Minion Pro. How can I change that to Georgia? I was sent about 60 small files, and I really don't want to do them one at a time. (To be fair, I do have Keyboard Maestro.)
