It seems you are talking about sampled brush-tips.
Which is unfortunate … if I remember correctly that limitation for setting currentToolOptions has come up on the Forum (respectively one of its previous incarnations) a while back and it seems the failure has not been fixed since.
I suppose one could include a check for "sampledData" and have the Script simply not do anything if the current brush utilizes a sampled brush, but otherwise I doubt there is a solution in ESTK Scripting.
Maybe UXP Scripting can achieve it, though.

Doesn’t sound so »small« an update, but rather like you isolated the issue!
Does Adobe itself provide the plugin?

I am afraid Photoshop itself at least won’t be »it« and I am not sure any Adobe application would fit the requirement. Have you asked over on the Adobe Fresco Forum?
Have you seen any videos that show what you want to achieve done by someone else live?
On the one hand the process sounds like something fairly straightforward, on the other hand it sounds like something fairly »niche« …
The live-performance-aspect just doesn’t seem to chime with what most Adobe applications I am familiar with are targeted at.

I am not sure what you mean by »it resets the brush to the default settings«, custom settings seem to be maintained here.
Could you please post screenshots with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Brush Settings, Options Bar, …) visible to illustrate?

JJMack's collage scripts do require a Background layer. He didn't explicitly state that this was required for the smart object scripts, however, it's a good place to start.
I figured the while-clause in the line of code in the original post would not terminate well if the lowest Layer was a Smart Object.

I suspect you might be better off creating or purchasing a Pattern and overlaying the structure over the painting. (Edit: with Blend Mode Linear Light or Overlay).

As I cannot reproduce the issue I can only recommend all-purpose trouble-shooting. Restoring Preferences after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved might be a good starting point: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/basic-trouble-shooting-steps.html https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/troubleshoot-gpu-graphics-card.html

The image’s virus scan seems to have stalled.
As a work-around please try copying the gray channel into an empty CMYK image (of the correct CMYK Sapce) and placing that in Indesign.

When I open in 365, it gives me a message right on the actual photoshop page...
@Ged_Traynor already mentioned there is no »Photoshop 365«, please refer to the actual version number.
The alert concerns your GPU which appears to be insufficient for this version of Photoshop.

Non-background Layers that completely fill the canvas seem to feature some artefacting in their transparency after resampling, too.
If no solution should become available one could automate a work-around (at least for a file with one background layer and x alpha channels).

Are you referring to the comment on how the Mask was started?
If so keep in mind that how a Layer Mask will create »new« content (for example when the Layer is moved or transformed or the Canvas is extended) depend on its original creation.
• Adding a Layer Mask without a Selection in the Layers Panel will provide a white Layer Mask, filling or painting it black will hide the layer on the canvas but the Mask’s off-canvas-content is/will be white.
So moving it will result in white sections appearing – which may not be a problem in some cases, but in others (if the Layer itself has off-canvas-content, if resampling happens, …) it can cause unintended regions of the Layer to become visible.
• If a Layer Mask is based on a Selection its off-canvas-content will be black, so even if the Layer extends beyond the canvas and it is scaled no unintended regions should become visible.

I don’t deny that AI-upscaling can produce impressive results (with the occasional unpleasant surprise).
But the recommendation still holds value:
Start with a properly dimensioned image.

One way to adress this kind of Layer Masks is
• to load it as a Selection and
• intersect that with a manual (rectangular) Selection that includes all the relevant parts of the Layer
• delete the original Layer Mask
• Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal Selection
Edit: In the screenshots I applied the Layer Style »Stroke« to highlight the unintended, visible pixels.

The Layer Mask of the Layer »donkey« seems to have been created imprudently in two ways:
• Firstly it apparently started with Reveal All instead of Reveal Selection or Hide All, meaning that transformations can result in semi-transparent pixels on the edges.
• Secondly the Mask is applied to a Smart Object instead of in the Smart Object, meaning that repeated transformations in the containing document would degrade it.

@cyclopsdx , please provide the file.
Converting a missing linked Smart Object to a Smart Object should, in my experience usually not be a problem.
I wonder if they or the containing document might have been created without embedding the profile?
