I just posted about a problem in Creative Cloud and had to choose a topic to proceed. The problem is that none of the topics had anything to do with my question, so I just picked one at random. So this forcing people to choose a topic will make it harder for people to answer my question, which is counter-productive.
Or at least can they add a few more topics or let us put in our own topics or something?

Many of us here don't even look at the topics and just check the forum for new posts that we haven't yet read.

topics are annoying and, as far as i can tell, useless. so just do what you did: pick one and forget it.

Topics are essential for some fora. And it's annoying, when users select all or irrelevant topics. It's, however, a feature that is not well understood, and topics are often ambiguous.

essential? don't know about that.

In the Acrobat forum, I do follow certain topics, and others not. With stock, certain employees follow certain topics. With other fora, they are useless.

Do you mean non-Adobe fora? I'm not aware of them being useful in these Adobe fora.
I've always understood that they are a mandatory feature of the Khoros platform which drives these Adobe forums so we just tolerate them but never use them in any useful or meaningful way

AFAIK, topic TAGS are chosen by the respective Product Community Managers which is why they vary by product.
They also may have some relevance to forum searches.

Unfortunately, the various boilerplate topic tags which have been pre-selected in most communities are hardly ever relevant to the question being asked - but users must choose at least one.
Also, of the topic tags presented to them, users rarely if ever choose topic tags which accurately relate to their query in any way. They're forced to choose one so they pick anything. It's just another hurdle they must jump in order to get their question posted.
This renders the forum search using topic tags practically useless.

Acrobat has an exhaustive list of topic TAGs to cover all its nuances.
Other products have vastly different topic TAGS.
When in doubt, select HOW TO.

To me, the pre-selections in those screenshots, especially the Acrobat tsunami, are overwhelming for most users and detrimental to the intent of the tagging feature.
They also add friction to the forum for newbies trying to get an answer to a simple question.
When in doubt, select HOW TO.
I doubt users even put that much thought into it. Besides there's no How To tag in some forums such as Photoshop or Lightroom. In that case, just click Windows or Mac or both.
Anyway, I get the intent of topic tagging but I see it as an exercise in futility. To be successful, it should be curated by AI or forum admins for consistency and accuracy (which we know won't happen). Then the forum search would be useful.

I remember being told that there is a limit as to how many topics can be used. Each board gets to choose their own topics, and some to a better job than others. No, we cannot put in our own topics; I wish we could!
When a post is moved because it is in the wrong place, it will end up topic-less unless both forums have matching topics. "Windows" and "Desktop-Windows" are not identical and the topic will disappear when the thread is moved.

That's fine. Topic TAGS are not important.

Then where does one make a suggestion that they get rid of them? I spent a great deal of time worrying where my post would end up-some forums are brutal and they will delete your post if it's not the right topic or tag. If they don't matter here, as everyone seems to agree they don't, how does one suggest they get rid of them?

Tags are part of the forum software, which is created by Khoros, a third party. Each board can decide which tags to use — some might use 4; others might use 15. I think you would have to go to each individual board to make the request, and in my personal opinion, it would be a lot of effort that would go nowhere.
Some boards have Discussions, Ideas, and Bugs in the forums. For others you would need to go to UserVoice for Ideas and Bugs. There is one board for an app that I use that I could never find an appropriate tag for, and it took me several years to get them to add a new tag, which they finally did — they call it "general".
Some boards have tags, but do not make them required.

Ok, Who is in charge of this board? Because you've got 3 community experts here saying tags are meaningless. So which ideas board or uservoice or whatever those things you said are do I have to go to? Like there's a forum option for ideas. Is that not the place to go to give ideas?

Community Experts are volunteers and are not always privy to everything that is known to staff.
I didn't say say the tags are meaningless. I said they can disappear when a post is moved from one board to another if the tags are not an exact match. Staff may use them analysis (that's a guess with nothing to back it up.)
For this board, here are the tags, and I think they are reasonable. I don't know if they are required when a new post is created.
Yes, you can post ideas to the Ideas section.
I don't think my replies are helping you, so I will leave this thread.

Your reply was the most helpful for enacting changes. It sounds like there's quite a bureacracy here. I wish you'd follow up with clarifications but I get it that you don't think it's worth it to improve the forums or my idea is just stupid and unworthy of consideration. Fair enough!
Have a nice life.

was reflecting (i think) that adobe forum changes are difficult to implement, and slow to (or more commonly never) change (for the better). some of us have found that discouraging.

Thanks for trying to help but that’s literally what this thread is. I already did that on this post. Maybe you missed that.
Now I am responding to someone else’s advice. They seem to be very knowledgeable about the individual boards admins so I’d like to hear from them. Thanks!

Oh. Thanks I clicked the button for ideas. There's also an option for feature requests when you post discussions so I just assumed that meant you could post ideas anywhere. I guess not? This forum is very confusing.
