Two things that would make this forum more user friendly.

1. When you click on a thread go to the place you left off reading. Why Jive can't do this makes no sense Webcrossing did it.

2. Eliminate the logging out issue when posting or jumping from forum to forum. Webcrossing could do this in fact you only had to login once and you were logged in forever.

Both of these things cause this to be a slow forum now. and that has nothing to do with how slow they actually are.

FWIW I think that is the right decision.

S.D.A. is right to say that we cannot extend the login timeout because of security issues related not to forums, but to other areas of Adobe.com. That said, we are looking into ways that we could possibly extend the login timeout just for Forums. Also no ETA on this one at the moment, we are only at the investigation phase.

From a technology / algorithm point that is very much a solved problem.

It is just that the implementation is suboptimal.

And if you want my recommendation (or even if you don't): don't look

into extending this for the forums with some limited patch. You need to

look into a generic redesign of your SSO platform to use service

specific ticket-granting-tickets so you can also safely extend single

sign-on to sites that are outside the *.adobe.com domain cookie

(acrobat.com for instance). That requires a redesign that will probably

be quite a bit bigger then a simple patch, both on the Adobe and the

Jive side, and will take a lot longer to develop, but security isn't a

field to keep muddying with patches when the design is broken.

For now I am just happy that you are not using the native Jive system

(sending an unencrypted username and password on every request).

That was a decision that was not thoroughly thought through!

There might be a few superficial advantages to being able to access all areas with one password* but there is a monumentally severe disadvantage to logging out your users at short intervals.

Obviously the decision makers are not regular forum users.

*I don't think I ever needed to do this in all the years I've been using the forums.
