Why does the Jive software change my "underline" tags to "span" tags when I post, thus eliminating the underline I wanted?

Because <span>
is the proper way of text formatting. However, all text formatting is removed after posting, with the sole exception of bold and italics (which use the <strong>
and <em>
tags).

The span tag is one way of formatting. The underline tag is still perfectly workable.
Also, if the tag isn't going to be honored, why is Underline an available option in the formatting?

I thought you could underline.
Lets try now.

Nope Bold and italic works but not underline. Something else broken.

It's not broken, it's intentional. (To deter spammers, remember?)

How does not honoring a tag defeat spammers?
And again, if the tag isn't going to be honored, why do we have an Underline option right next to Bold and Italic?

This is the only semi-official explanation we have received:

As to why the non-working options have not been removed from the menus, .... , well, experience seems to show that changes for the better are somewhat unfrequent around here.

The formatting is honored - you can see it in the editor. Just don't click on Post Message - it is then that all text formatting (including indention) is removed from the post.
This is something that has been implemented recently (2 or 3 months ago); it all (text formatting, including background colors for highlighting) worked nicely at the beginning.
