According to the forum list, this thread is marked as answered:

http://forums.adobe.com/thread/423893?tstart=0

However, the bar over the OP is contradictory:

This Question is                             Answered

1 "correct" answer available (10 pts) 2 "helpful" answers available (5 pts)

and all posts are unmarked in terms of stars.

This may be the way forward: we let the software decide and get rid of point giving.

Jacob, you can mark your original post/question as 'answered' without awarding points to any specific response. The software also marks all questions as 'possibly answered' automatically as soon as *any* response appears.

As I and many others have said, the points system is counterproductive.

It leads to hasty answers or even to people not bothering to read a thread because it's shown as answered on the summary page.

And it is not an accurate reflection of the reliability of the poster.

Well, I think this makes the system even more unfair and, therefore, useless:

Case 1: User replies with a "class in a forum" type of answer that completely clarifies the issue and gives a full solution to the specific problem. Questioner understands 1/10 of the explanation, but finds that the solution works, marks the question as Answered, and gives no points to the answerer.

Case 2. User replies with a workaround of the type "hit Esc key twice, then keep Shift + Ctrl pressed for 13 secs, and it will work". Questioner tries this, it works for him because a neutrino passes through his CPU at the time, marks the question as Answered, and gives the maximum of points to the answerer.

Do I need to continue?

Thought you folks might appreciate something an inexperienced and apparently wise OP said in one of their threads on a product forum.

What do I do now about "Helpful Answer" and "Correct Answer?"  This forum has now given me another dilmna [sic] in life...

not bothering to read a thread because it's shown as answered on the summary page.+

bingo. not to mention if it's not on the 1st page it's not getting read because of the back button glitch.

How come some threads, such as this one, have answer point buttons in each post but those from the OP, and other have none?

Jacob, could you please give an example of the second case? I'm not sure I'm following you, and I have opened so few threads that I have only seen your first case.

Ah, Claudio, I just realized that you see them (only) as OP.

It is hard to get used to silly things.

when you make a thread you have the option to set it as a question or not(it's a question by default). If you don't set it as a question then you can't give out points and there's also no "possible answered" bar. The threads that aren't a question don't have a !? in the thread icon. The threads started before the switch aren't marked as questions.

Unless the OP knows what to look for the Answered line is difficult to pick out.  But maybe that is a blessing in some cases.

Concerning the points system, my question is; "What's the Point?"

I have about 10 or 15 points and I haven't answered any questions, at least not intelligently.

I've also had 'thanks very much, that worked' a couple of times - very simple queries with straightforward answers, the ones I specialise in from newbies who obviously had no notion of points. If I took these things seriously I'd be a bit miffed, as it is I think it just illustrates how misleading points totals could be. Away with them!

I found it hilarious that Buko got the ten points for this one:

I suppose you could learn Spanish.

Hey, Buko, you got the points!  Beautiful system.
