Blank lines deleted from pasted text

Blank lines in text pasted from the clipboard into a message get deleted when the message is posted (at least with IE 7 and 8).  Some use cases in which this is quite annoying:

- Copying text from some other Web page, e.g. a FAQ.

- Composing your message in another, more civilized text editor.

That will happen if you paste text into the HTML editor, but shouldn't if you're pasting into the Rich Text editor. Grabbing some stuff from the Adobe site to test pasting into the RT editor:

I'm thinking the difference is the window you are pasting it into? I'm using Firefox, btw, tho I don't think that is the difference. Also manually added < P > tags for my top and bottom lines.

Hmm, just did some more tests:

  • With IE 8, the rich-text editor eats blank lines of text pasted from Word 2007, Outlook 2007 (Word as editor), Notepad, and Textpad.

  • With Firefox 3.0.1, the rich-text editor eats blank lines of text pasted from Outlook 2007 (Word as editor).  It doesn't eat blank lines from Word 2007, Notepad, and Textpad.

Other forum software, e.g. that used at ElementsVillage.com, handles pastes from IE 8 just fine.

Here's an example of pasting 3 lines of text separated by blank lines from Word 2007 into IE 8:

Line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1 line1
