Spell checking on Jive forums

OK, this may have already been discussed, but I swear I looked. I searched "spell check" and didn't find it. If I missed it, please just point me in that direction and lock this thread.

Thanks.

<rant>

These are the Adobe forums. Why does the spell checker flag the names of Adobe products like "Lightroom"? Why are names of codecs or formats like tif flagged. Heck, why is "codec" flagged?

Why is Photoshop flagged if I type it photoshop? You know it is now a verb as well as a noun.

It just seems wrong to me that I have to look through a long post to find the errors only to find out that the only errors are names of Adobe products or commonly used words in a video or photo editing world.

Doesn't Adobe have any pull with the Jive folks at all?

Steven,

This archived thread seems to indicate that specll checking is by browser only.

I missed it back then, but now a search brought it up.

Jacob,

My spell checker works fine. It is just Adobe related words and video codecs, and the word codec itself (I know it should be all caps, but who bothers?).

I am not user my browser's spell checker. I am using the spell checker provided by the Adobe forum and this forum software should know that photoshop is not spelled wrong, neither is codec, or wmv, or jpg.

Yet all of them are underlined.

I see, Steven.

I never use spell checking, so I thought the old thread (still) described the situation.

Looks like a dictionary got lost or mangled in an update. Feel free to list other words here and we can build it up again.

You can streamline it by using just 4 words like this:

Exercise

and some pedant mght also add:

Nobody is suggesting anything here.  People are simply observing the pace of change on these forums.  Somethings get done quickly while others take a lifetime.  You just have to get used to it.

Adobe-Admin can't control everything here because his superiors may not allow certain changes if a cost is involved in making the change.

I am reasonably certain that calling my requests for additions to the Jive dictionary a "pointless exercise" is suggesting something. You might want to read Joe's posts and see if you really believe that he wasn't.

I would just ignore him.  I am sure he didn't mean anything sinister.  He was simply joking.

You take things very seriously.  These are open forums and people can write almost anything they can get away with.  Some posts get censored while others don't.  It depends on who is online.

I believe that Joe is being as sinister as he can get away with. Yes, I am serious about getting the dictionary fixed if I can. I want to use the spell checker, but it is inconvenient. There is a good reason to try to get it addressed, and I don't see the point in chiming in on a thread where he may otherwise have no interest.

It is his right, to be sure, but is it right? This isn't the Video Lounge. It is supposed to be a place to voice forum related issues, as far as I can tell. Is the dictionary a critical issue? No, of course not. But with Adobe it is abundantly clear that they listen to the squeaky wheels. So.... Squeak!"

Perhaps it is very hard to fix the dictionary.  They seem to clear all the spam messages and disable people's account if they exceed the tolerance limits but dictionary has never been fixed since I joined these forums in 2009.

We might have to wait until humans have been to Mars to fix the dictionary problem!.  So we are talking 2023 in terms of time period.

That seems rather sad, but you could very well be correct. I just took the message in post number four to mean that there was a process that could be followed to accomplish the task. If that isn't the case, well, so be it.

If you are going to play games, you could at least try to find words that mean the same thing but do not happen to be in the Jive dictionary. That would be a challenge.

I missed it back then, but now a search brought it up.

In FireFox and Seamonkey That I use. These forums don't even allow Mozilla's Dictionary builtin or costom Dictionary for words added.

You have to use the ABC Check mark symbol and it doesn't allow remembering custom workd by an add command you have to simply ignore the word. There should be allowances for adding Custom words. And being in electronics medium Jive should know the word Codec (codec is a word).

The Jive software should be setup to allow the use of the browser's Dictionary which often times is larger and can allow for custom words.

Philip,

I agree that it would be nice to be able to add our own words to the dictionary. Hiwever, I believe that Adobe could easily get someone to add a lot of commonly used words on the forum to the built-in dictionary that the Jive forums use.

If Adobe took care of most of it, and we were allowed to deal with the rest using our browser, that would work for me.

You serious think that jive would do such??? ( I have orange looking Bridge in Brooklyn New York I'll sell you for $50).

Simplist would simply be remove spell checking from the Jive software and leave it up to Web Browser to do the checking. I don't know about IE. But all Mozilla Products use spell checker both for email/newsgroup and Web Browser. I think Chrome does. I know iCab, OminWeb, Opera, Safari all do. Mozilla Products spellcheck works whether plain text or HTML

Steven,

I agree about the ability to create custom dictionaries. For decades, I would always make sure to migrate my custom dictionary to new versions of WordPerfect. I had many wine-related words, photographic terms, video terms, and did not want to redo all those, especially a lot of the international wine terms/words. It was the same with PageMaker and then InDesign.

Now, I realize that we are talking about a Web site, and not one's word processor, or page-layout program. but someone should be able to sit down with the list that has shown up in several replies, enter a few keystrokes, and then be done. Sounds easy to me, but what do I know?

I have no clue. I never heard of Jive until these forums changed over. I don't know anything about them. It just seems to me that Adobe is a big enough company to throw their weight around a little to fix a dictionary, is all.
