AMD 3000 series vs Intel 9th Gen Computer Build

Community Beginner ,

Hello all,

I plan to custom build my computer for video editing primarily; no games, streaming or anything. At this time, I edit H.264 XAVC Sony files (1080p/60fps and occasionally 4K/30fps - 60Mbit or 100Mbit quality files).

I'm looking for build that can easily without lag, scrub through the timelines, encode adn decode files easily, allow multicam to work flawlessly without lag, fast rendering times while maintain cool CPU temperatures, basic lumetri colour corrections, basic effects and anything in between!

I've done a lot of reach online and watched hours and hours of video on YouTube. I would liek to future proof myself and make sur emy build is compatible for future generation CPUs.

I've come to essentially 2 major builds:

AMD BUILD

AMD Ryzen 3900X (12c/24t) or 3700X (8c/16t)

GTX 1660 6GB or GTX 1660 TI 6GB

16GB 3000/32000Mhz RAM

INTEL BUILD

Intel i9-9900k or i7 9700K

GTX 1660 6GB or GTX 1660 TI 6GB

16GB 3000/32000Mhz RAM

Which system would premire pro favour? I've read things on hardware acceleration, quick sync and CUDAs but having a tough time deciding which build would be best bang for the buck.

Thank you in advance for your help!

I would go for the intel and a cpu without quick sync. If I read the forums nothing but trouble. And in the end you are disabling in the bios.

4K stuff needs 64 gig of ram but doen expect to edit this natively without hickupps. Also might need to run on a lower frequency.

Might also apply for the sony files as they are heavily compressed long gop.

Future proof? Who knows.

I assume you mean disabling the quick sync via bios? At this time i'm mainly ediing 1080p so 16Gb is fine, but obviously motherboard will have room to expand to 64GB or 128GB ram.

hello,

i use amd 3700x, RTX 2070 super, 32gb 3200Mhz.

my timeline is sometimes laggy and i create 2-3 min HD vids. if i use "clip speed" 1000%, i have huge frame drops in the timeline (playback resoltuion 1/8 and without high quality placback). it is normal?

how is the peformance by Intel i7 with quick sync in timeline?

Wow I'm surprised to hear your timeline is laggy like that with 8 cores and 32gb ram. I'm not sure how performance is with i7 or i9. What codec is your hd files?

Thanks! However I feel like this video is a bit more outdated and doesn't include AMD 3000 series. Anything out there that talks about amd 3000 and timeline performance?

This video is in german. He talks about timeline feeling without intel quick sync. He means it is very bad. I will swap my amd 3700x with intel i7 9700k. I can tell you my experience. Maybe with a little video.

Thanks! Sadly I don't understand German! However, how was your experience with 3700x? I was going to use that. From a lot of research, it seems like export times are faster with AMD especially with the number of cores and price point. However, timeline smoothness is also important to me

i think too. export and multitasking are very good by amd. but maybe adobe is in export and playback better with intel. How other programs works, I dont know. i would create a real time video for adobe premiere and upload to youtube. I hope other consumer can report your experience too. Maybe in few weeks come a amd update and all works fine.

today I install the i7 9700k.

My result is...
He is so much faster in Adobe. More timeline peformance and better export time for h.264.
But dont forget to activate the intel HD graphic in bios 😉

Thanks! Can you share what your other components are? Ram and Ram speed? Gpu? Motherboard? You said it's so much faster in Adobe, did you install ryzen 3 series before?
