I have ZERO knowledge of bit coin mining, but this says it causes price rises and shortages of high end graphic cards

Yup ... that's true. GPU's have some of the best algorithmic computing power available. Ergo, you need tons of calculations per second, group GPU's to do the job. CPU's are built to do a completely different set of processes.

There is a way to get around the price gouging if you do not mind waiting.  EVGA on their site web site for instance has reasonable pricing BUT you have to wait for the next shipment and check the "AUTO NOTIFY" button.  Here is a link to the GTX 1060 6GB line.as an example
