new pc build - drive allocations..

hi guys, im building a pc and i was just after some tips as to how many hard drives to get and how to utilise the different speeds of the drives for project files, startup disk etc..

without much thought im thinking.

a 250gb ssd for the startup drive

Samsung 970 EVO 250GB M.2 - ae disk cache

Kingston SA1000 NVMe SSD - 960GB - main project files drive

2tb 7200rpm drive - archive of all of my projects

2tb 7200rpm drive - mirror backup of the above drive

the motherboard is a ASUS ROG Strix z370-f

it has:

1 x M.2 Socket 3, with M key, type 2242/2260/2280 storage devices support (SATA & PCIE 3.0 x 4 mode)*2

1 x M.2 Socket 3, with M key, type 2242/2260/2280 storage devices support (PCIE 3.0 x 4 mode)*3

6 x SATA 6Gb/s port(s)

Support Raid 0, 1, 5, 10

Intel® Optane™ Memory Ready *4

I would use the M.2 as my boot drive

that was my initial thought.. but once im booted up, theres no more benefit right?

Incorrect.  It's where your operating system lives which is the foundation of everything you do with your computer.

Unless of course there's some advanced setup I don't know of where you boot from one drive and have your OS on another...I know there's alot i don't know

would i install my adobe apps in there too then? or should i install those on the same drive as my working files?

Yes.  Install the adobe suite on your primary drive...you can a folder where you save your projects & assets on a different drive...but the main apps you want on the primary drive.

If you only have one M.2 I'd use it as the primary/boot drive.

If I got a second one I would use that for cache.

Get a 500 GB instead.

That's good advice.  I have a 250gig primary and I'm constantly having to manage it to make sure there's enough free space for it to fly.

why would i need more than 250gb for a startup disk?

its just windows and adobe apps.?

then a secondary drive for the main working projects..

then a third fast drive for the disk cache..

idoes anyone else have any thoughts on this setup?

It also has system files such as System Restore Points and Windows Updates, which can take a significant amount of space in Windows 10.
