If you're just learning the applications, I'd say that's okay.

If you're using the MacBook Pro for work, I'd go with 48GB or 64GB of RAM and either 1TB or 2TB Flash stroage.

For productive work, 24GB is OK. If budget allows, aim for 32GB or higher.

The 512GB internal storage is sort of minimal depending on on how you work:

If you expect to store everything on the laptop, 512GB internal is typically not enough for video editing and effects work, because of the size of video files and cache files. For some intensive professional workflows, you might want to keep 512GB of storage free for the Media Cache alone, with more space needed for the system, applications, video files… For that reason, if you want to do it all on internal storage, I agree with Warren Heaton’s recommendation to pay the expensive Apple price for 1TB or 2TB of internal storage.

If you already plan on and have budgeted for using fast external storage for video editing, then 512GB of internal storage can be OK. You’d use the internal 512GB for OS, applications, and small documents (text, spreadsheets…). You should try to leave at least 100GB of internal storage free for various large temporary cache files that the OS and applications create and release over time as you work. Then, you would do all your video work using external SSDs:

  • One or more large, fast SSDs for source media, such as video and audio files.
  • A separate large fast SSD dedicated to the Media Cache for Premiere Pro and After Effects.

Currently, more memory lets you have longer After Effects real time previews. After Effects will soon relax that by being able to preview from the cache on storage (currently in beta I think), which is nice because you’ll be able to get away with less memory; it will be easier to have just 24GB. But to support that, you’ll have to have enough fast free storage for a large Media Cache. If you skimp on both memory and storage…well, then it’ll just be slow.
