Dumb, and more than a little creepy.

Dumb, maybe, but effective.
And they got some free exposure here, too.

When I saw you posted a reply I was anxious to see
what you thought was a dumb ad... oh well.
Actually, I think both of those ads are ineffective because
they are too much about "dancers" or "giant marionettes"
than about nifty cars or moving vans... just my opinion.
And, if they're already paying for network placement, what
gets posted in a forum is totally negligible in terms of impact.
I concede that dumb ads can often be very effective.

The Lunesta "moth" reminds me of Bela Lugosi turning into a vampire bat (no glow, however): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VoaMw91MC9k

Joe,
Going back several models, Mercedes added those options, and as I recall, did a much better job of pointing to them in their ads. Will try to locate some of those.
I also agree about the giant marionette ad series (there are several, plus some variations) creeping one out. I think of the various "Chucky" slasher films... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chucky_(Child's_Play)

If a commercial gets your attention, and more importantly, keeps your attention, and causes people to delay fast forwarding the DVR, then it is successful even if you only see the logo for a moment.
The human brain is inclined to associate interesting things with "good". Unfortunately, even irritating things sometimes get classified as "good" because they kept your attention. Nonetheless, we only need to see the logo for a moment.
I didn't remember that Mayflower was the point of that commercial that I had seen before. But I remember watching it all the way through. Somewhere in the back of my mind there is a little storage space that says "Mayflower = good". I can't help it. The brain just works that way.
Therefore, any commercial that gets watched is a successful commercial. If it gets watched more than once, it is a great commercial. Especially in the days of using the DVR for time shifting. I very seldom watch live TV, therefore, any commercial I actually watch is a bonus for the advertiser.

Joe... take that coke ad and make it modern...today's tendency to use 2-3 words to admonish consumer to " be " something instead of such a simple and outdated exhortation to " drink " ( top of ad ).
ie. " be more " ....( pbs ).
