VW Polo bomber ad:

Funny in a "should I really laugh at this" sorta way.

Unquestionably bad taste on at least two levels.

I'm calling it a 'dumbad'.

NSA, FBI, CIA, US DEPT OF TRANSPORTATION, USDA REPORT SUMMARY

Using hidden cameras, toll booth reciepts, cell phone usage, and the consumption of hamburgers at retail stores along the ROUTE taken by the so called " hardened criminals " in the New Jersey Hijacking ( exit 5 ).. it has been determined that although Bill was NOT at exit 5 during the heist... he WAS DOING THE FOLLOWING:

1) drinking wine in the south of France and laughing hysterically at some joke his wife made at 9pm GMT

2) speaking with a waiter with suspicious background affliations ( about wine list ).

3) asking about a particular CHEF in the hotel who may or may NOT have suspicious connections with horse meat distrubution systems in Poland.

Although it has been determined that Bill and his wife are NOT subjects of anti American activities it remains to be seen if all those they contacted on their recent vacation are pure as the driven snow !

Let's keep our eyes open !

About the closest thing that I can recall, that might be considered as "anti-American," was perhaps a few discussions with winemakers in the Côte-de-Beaune regarding our love for the fabulous Chardonnays from the 1er Cru vineyards, such as Le Montrachet, Corton-Charlamagne or perhaps St. Aubin (value wines), or maybe from the Côte-de-Nuits, regarding their Pinot Noirs. Even then, we never "dissed" any US versions of those wines, especially as the Domaine Drohin also produce some good Chardonnays and some very good Pinot Noirs from their OR vineyards (they have examples of those for tasting in Beaune!). Now, they wanted to give us a "birthday wine" for my wife, and we DID chose their Puligny-Montrachet, instead of one of their OR wines. Same for another negotiant, the day before, when we chose their Corton-Charlamagne (no US wines whatsoever from them).

Now, there might be some viable charges against me, regarding the drinking of almost ALL of the great French wines from those Regions. We had already devastated the US supply of all 1er Cru FR Chards from the year 2005 (only a very few bottles left at Blackberry Farm!), and then the "damage" that we did in Paris last year.

There is talk that many FR winemakers might have to release their 2011 vintages early, to counter the consumption that we have recently been responsible for. Regarding that, I am guilty, as charged - but they WERE great wines.

Well, we only did a very few Chablis, as I find too many to be austere (colder climate w/ less than ideal ripening time). However, some producers DO very nice Chablis from their Premiere Cru vineyards - we had two.

Should still be some Chablis left (real ones, and not Paul Masson Chablis), just not Chardonnays from the Côte-de-Beaune.

Still, with lighter seafood (no heavy creme sauces), Chablis (again, the real ones) can be nice, as can a crisp Sancere (Sauvignon Blanc from Bordeaux). If one does not have access to a good Premiere Cru Chablis, then I would go with Champagne.

Hunt

PS - Chablis is made from the Chardonnay grape, where Paul Masson "Chablis" was probably made from Thompson Seedless...

I can't be too mean about this..cause its human nature to some extent..and also the ego of actors....being commodities...it gets weird... is why so many individuals become lost.

Lots of people deal with it though.. some better than others. You know what I mean.

Orson Welles doing those commercials was like watching someone drunk on night train trying to get into doing gallo wine commercials to hit the big time. Poor guy. People made money and so on. Thank God I didn't have to work on any of those ads.

I gave up commercials when I got $ 600/ 10 hours instead of $285/ hours doing episodic tv.. or $300/ 8 hours for majors .. for dolly grip work.

I realized I was staring at a hamburger for 10 hours instead of staring at actors doing SOMETHING AT LEAST ( drama ? etc ? )... and I would end up being so dead inside it wasn't worth the money.... sell hamburgers and chicken and so on ...and deal with morons in the commercial world, or go for drama and new stuff and stories...??? And make less money, but have longer gigs ( 2 day commercial vs 4 month movie ? ).

Lots of things to consider back then...and I went for BEER THIRTY ! YIPEE ! ...and throw orson welles under the bus IMO... he's lucky he could talk let alone 'act'..at that point...

Yes, it has been interesting to see who "sells out," regarding advertising. Heck, Bob Dylan even allowed his music to be used, as did U2, and many others.

Now, I would NEVER appear in a wine ad for Paul Masson, but would for Joseph Drohin, or maybe Domaine Romanée Conti... "Never drink a La Tache, before its time."

PS - at least there is no worldwide beer shortage, at least not one due to our consumption.

Not that I doubt you Bill, but if they wanted to pay you to make the ad, do you really not have a price at where you would sell out? Really?

I am not talking about $5K. But 100 times that much? Would it not be too tempting to turn down? I mean, isn't there a point at which you would have to kick yourself for turning it down? We are talking about a lot of money to play with at the next big auction.

OK, OK, maybe I could be cast for "Two Buck Chuck," but only for the "right price," as I WOULD be selling my soul...

PS - "sell no wine before its time" takes on a whole new meaning with Two Buck Chuck - that time was about last Thursday.
