I have bought into this photography thing hook, line and sinker. Can you believe this?
I went out and bought a new laptop that would fit into my new camera bag. How sick is that?
The bag maker said that it could hold a laptop with a 15.3" screen. Unfortunately laptops have 15.6" screens. Even the 14" screens would not fit because the pocket, while wide enough, is not deep enough.
Oh well, now I have Windows 8 to play with, and a touch screen to boot. So I guess I need to try writing touch apps since the Adobe software for that comes with the Creative Cloud.

hmmmm... okay, thanks Steve.. nice to know your workflow re: ingestion etc.
I did some reading on internet and I'm sorta only able to choose 12 or 14 bit raw and it's only lower byte count if I use that crop factor ( like for dx lenses ) which would be sorta dumb to do... not use full chip.
I hope to get out into backyard again today to shoot raw and see how fast it can shoot ( fps ). Should be about 4 I think with mirror up... will find out. Part of that is the transfer to card speed...and I got the extreme sandisc cards ( class 10 ).
Moving stuff changing again as per weather permitting.. got guys coming over to install AC now and I can also get the last car load of junk over to here later. Then fool with camera after lunch maybe. I am sooo burnt on this moving stuff....it's like getting very old.

Rod,
I cannot help you with the Compressed vs Uncompressed. My NEF's are Uncompressed, and there is no option for Compressed, probably because of the age of that camera. Maybe others, with newer Nikons, can offer some suggestions. With the NEF, I only have two choices: with, and without JPEG "previews." I usually shot with the JPEG's, but if I am filling up CF cards, will drop that option, and go for just the Camera RAW, though the JPEG's are really pretty small. Still, if I am being a "shooting fool," any CF card space saving, is worht it. Otherwise, I just keep it with the JPEG previews.
Good luck, and soon, maybe I can rely on you to help ME out, should I upgrade my Nikons.

See? Told you so!
As the moving begins to wind down, just begin thinking of this as "Rod's Big Adventure."
One neat thing about moving into a "super-senior's" home is that many of those residents can probably help out with background material on your film. A few probably even knew the RR barons, and can recount the "glory days," of Lake Winnemucha. I feel that they would love to sit for you, and just yap about the "good old days" around the lake. Now, you might have to sit, sipping Metamucil, and looking at photos of the great-great-grandkids, but just humor them. Some WILL have great stories to tell.
Now, you may have to add a bunch of Roscolux #15 Deep Straw, to tone down the "blue hair," on the ladies, but I am sure that you can handle that.
Happy shooting,

hmmm....
I have a cf slot and a sd slot.. and I guess some people put the jpgs on one and the raw on the other...and I wasn't interested in that sorta thing before so I only got sd cards. Maybe later will get a couple CF cards for that kinda scenario.
So far, from what I've read, I just am going to deal with the uncompressed 14 bit fx mode raw and make sure that I'm shooting serious stuff at that point...not just snapshots.
Snapshots I'll use jpg... and I got several size and quality options for that.
I know this sounds crazy, but I really don't have fun when messing with the camera settings etc.. it's basically a pain in the butt. I'm so used to just using film and making my own decisions beforehand and so on.. "playing" with the digital camera holds very little interest for me.
However, I DO have to know the camera well, so I will continue to do what I have to do in order to be fast at using it.
Steve mentioned 4 T drives and I'm scared of that.. the degrag time and all that is beginning to freak me out...especially for video...got any feedback on that stuff ?
I'm pretty sure the stuff Dave and John T mentioned for new computer was 2 t drives ??
I'm never gonna shoot events and stuff where I just run the camera to the max ... which is like 29 minutes or something, before SD card fills and or chip heats up too much.. .. my takes will be about 2 minutes maybe for the interview stuff... and if I shoot a total of 30 min of takes for the whole interview I'd be surprised. Final edit of interviews would be about 5 minutes tops.
hehe.. metamucil.... if I keep having beer thirty every day I'm gonna need that in place of my orange juice in the morning someday. So I'll be with the in crowd of seniors on the patio having metamucil on the rocks maybe ? I was out there early this morning ( back yard ) and checking out the ducks and birds and stuff... kinda nice.
As per weather and stuff ( which is sunny now ) I got a call from Phil this morning saying, " Let's install the AC NOW ! " So I said, " okay" and he and friend installed the AC.
Unfortunately the 'frame like cover thing ' that fits around the AC doesnt match up well with the sleeve thing and it doesn't look like a pro job. Bummer. It does work well though and was a bargain... so I'll deal with it later. If I can I'll hire a pro to come fix it.. but since it's strictly a " cosmetic " thing I won't go nuts about it.
Now I got that one more car load of small stuff ( printer, scanner, etc ) and I'll be done with move ... then I gotta empty the walk in closet and repack and so on... almost there.. but , yes, you are right, moving really blows.

Remember the thread, where Mitchell and I were working on your changeover to "surfer dude?" Well, we need to now do another image-makeover. Since I am in AZ, I probably have more experience with this, than Mitchell does (though maybe he can evaluate my instructions?), I will give you a few "starters."
First, get a pair of plaid shorts, a floral, immitation Hawaiian print shirt, black over-the-calf socks and viny sandals (brown). Maybe even a funky straw hat, with clashing hat band, would benefit you too. That outfit will allow you basically travel incognito throughout the entire complex. No one will even see you. Think of such clothing as "retirement home camo."
Also, when doing the taping, photography and interviews, your subjects will not suspect anything, and will more gladly open up to you - as you will be viewed as "one of them," and especially with a glass of Metamucil on the Rocks.
Enjoy, and glad that the AC is hooked up and running, even if it's not yet a thing of beauty.

I have this humongous AC " cover " for when winter comes..even though I got tons of foam type stuff crammed around the AC for insulation.. this thing fits over AC when not in use in winter. Or like when there is NO AC in the sleeve......And I have NO CLUE where to store this stupid thing.. its like 3 feet wide at least..and about 2.5 feet high..and about 8 inches deep...ITS HUGE ....
dont I need flip flops with black socks too ??? They would set off my pale skin and vericose veins nicely IMO... ??
edit.. just hired chic to clean the old apt...and made arragements for the complex issue of " keys " ( access ). hehe.. even simple stuff gets fun when dealing with stuff like " well, if I lock the door when I leave I wont be able to leave the key on the counter, will I ? "
Sorta almost as funny as medicom wanting to call me on phone they are destined to install ....
Have gone through half my list of " address changes" like SS, one of 2 banks, license, union pension, electric company, etc.
What fun !

yikes.. this AC is freezing my butt off... been running it for a few hours...
what temp is like normal for humans when the thermostat on ac is working well ?
It finally shut off just now at 70 so whats normal ?

I guess 70 is pretty good.. it turns on for about 20 seconds every half hour or so...
And I'm not freezing butt off anymore...feels okay.
Changed more address things and even told the union pension girl I love her ( she send me pdf and I filled out and sent back and she immediately processed it .. how cool is THAT ? )
I think thats the bread and butter for adobe now.. the pdf stuff for govt and companies, etc.
I don't really care so I guess it's a moot point.. dont wanna get into this wacky stuff here.
Im almost ready to cook up the sea scallops I've been defrosting and stick camera out the window again at the birch tree....see what real men do ....

OY VEY
I just looked at shot out the window to my now favorite birch tree....and then looked in closet for my fluid head ( which is buried in there somewhere in a plastic container )....and decided..." This shot can wait ".
I wanted to see the screen of the window ( 2 feet from lens ) and also the tree ( 30 feet away ) in focus.. so gotta put mirror up and get into long exposure.
It aint happening today.. that closet has to be emptied and repacked so I can get to what I want.
However, although I lament the temporary cancellation of this particular 'vision' right now.. it dont mean Im dead in the water.. maybe I can shoot the new " shower" instead ? I think the shower with VO 5 on the shelf looks really cool... Too bad there's no white mouse looking worried and trapped in the shower though... that would be a big plus.
I always have these weird ideas...but not as weird as Joe.

Have they given you your Medic-alert pendant yet?

Rod,
Today being a Monday, didn't the "super-senior" center have "walker races" at 3:00PM?
Hunt

The walker races was postponed due to a spur of the moment " Turtle " race...
The lake has carp and turtles living in it.. and a number of these turtles were chosen by tenants to represent them in the race...
I painted numbers on the turtle backs with water soluble marker...and it was kinda like the Preakness in very slow motion...
Well , maybe it wasn't like the Preakness at all, now that I think about it...
But there was lots of shouting and encouragement by tenants to get their turtles into the racing spirit and finish first !

You know, sometimes a bit of "shouting and encouragement" is a good thing, especially after a heated shuffleboard match, or perhaps the delivery of the Depends.
Way to go.

you probably noticed the nice soft light in the shower...pic posted above...
That's one of the "diffusion" materials for lighting... appropriately called " shower curtain ".
The suggestion re: straw is good, but I don't have any so I might use 1/4 cto instead ?? Not as yellow but warmer....For the blue hair ? hehe.. we'll see...
There is some new stuff going on re: the " food pantry " distribution, according to one tenant I spoke with.
Apparently a couple times per month ( previously on Fridays ) a bunch of bags of food got delivered to the meeting area ( the one with kitchen and a bunch of tables etc ...bingo is also played in that room in the fall and winter ). Anyway, people would 'sign up' for these bags but there was some difficulty. Namely, some who had not signed up would take bags anyway. This in a way was considered bad form by those who now had no food bag to collect.
The bags were just left and when you felt like it you'd go there and get your bag. No names on bags.
So now a new food pantry delivery company is being recruited, which will more aggressively solicit individuals to sign up for a bag...and those bags will have the names of the people on them, as well as their apt. number. I'm not sure but maybe an attemp to deliver the bags to the apt. first... and left in meeting area of tenant isn't home ?
Next door to this building is a little building that has a food pantry IN the building.. You can go there and get a bag often if you want....The same building has a second hand store that has clothes, furniture and stuff like that. It also has a boy scout troop thing in it.
There are a couple washers and dryers in a laundry room, and I did my laundry the other day. When I went to put laundry from washer to dryer some old codger was standing there with his laundry and gave me fish eyes when I came into the room....
I'm thinking maybe his 'routine' was disrupted by my unexpected use of machine at that time on that day ? I tried speaking with him but he has a hearing aid that apparently doesn't work.
edit:
As you know from reading PG Wodehouse, one of the problems with getting close to old men who are perched on a chair in a public area ( such as a meeting room or private club etc ) is that they will grab and latch onto one of the buttons on your jacket, and not let go until he's finished telling you some fascinating 'story'.
I am being very careful about that sort of thing so I don't get trapped too often.

Heh...
I have a feeling the beer thirty routine is gonna have to end pretty soon...
Also the cigarettes...starting in June the tax just went up another dollar something per pack...so I'll get out the " Roll O Matic " machine and make my own cigs.
Made my own in NY for a while cause they are like $ 10.00 / pack in ny thanks to Bloomberg, the social deliverer of sweetness and light.
This time I'll get some kinda "box" to do it in , on the coffee table, cause it is sorta a messy operation no matter how careful you are.
Well.. packed car with last load but it started raining right after I packed it so it's in parking lot with the load still in it. But at least it's HERE....and paid the girl to clean apt and gave her key etc...moving right along !
what JOY !

Got my first DATE lined up for shooting documentary material...June 1st...
The local fire dept. has a party with dancing ( live bands ), bar b q and fish fry , kids climb on fire engines, stuff like that....is a fund raiser.
I bought ticket last year to support them but didn't go.
This time I'll bring camera and tripod and shoot some B roll stuff...Principal stuff if I get the chief to yap with me about event...that sorta thing.
So many people in town go to the thing I'll probably see some of those I've already spoken to about interviews ( hist society chairman, city manager, etc ).
This will be a milestone.. as I have not shot ANYTHING yet for documentary.
I'll have to hook up the ext drive and finalize the folder structure for keeping track of things...that is in the car at the moment.
One cool thing is I just bought a folding chair and I can bring that too, so I can just hang out a real long time and shoot when the mood hits me.

One interesting part of shooting this sorta stuff..is that due to not getting releases from people I'll probably throw a lot of them out of focus and instead focus on THINGS...like the fire truck, the Bar B Q grill, The pet DOG...stuff like THAT... LOL.... that should be interesting....

I bought one and a package of refills...and it's sitting on kitchen counter thing between living room and kitchen...you know, that hole in the wall between kitchen and dining area encove in living room..
Tried it once and didn't like it.. no smoke 'feeling' ...no nothin feeling at all. Was weird.
