Thank you, GoldingD, One of the reasons Synology has started Synology Drive, is because loads of (pro) photographers need more storage than most HDD's can accomodate (in my desktop pc, I have 6 spinning drives (two of which are 14TB, the others 12, 2*6 and a 4TB (I think)), two NVMe's and 1 SSD. But that set up was never going to last as my storage needs are growing, thus the reason for looking at a NAS. With SHR, I have created """one disk""", which is 38,2 TB, which makes everything a lot simpler. Also having an easy connection for my MBP, in stead of sharing disks from my PC (which obviously is just one disk and therefore, read/write speeds will be lower than in a NAS, as the disks are 'stacked'). That also means I can connect via a VPN to my master RAW files while I am 'on the road' and a client absolutely need a picture "yesterday" because he/she deleted the image accidentally on their side and can't recover it (yes, happened a bunch of times already). But then you get into the issues that Adobe put in our way - no support on NAS-systems, that is where the Synology team shines in my opinion, as they created Synology Drive. You "should" always have an up to date LRcat and helper files on both (or more) machines that you are using to edit from. So the master catalog is changed on my MBP upon shutdown, Synology Drive is then sending over that data to the NAS "Synology Drive", which is then sent over to my Desktop PC. I can open the same catalog, including all the changes I have made on my MBP, or on my PC and I can continue to edit. This process runs smooth and I know many other photographers using the same approach (for example @henryhudson photography), that also had/has a Mac and a WIN pc. All is working (except drive letter assignment for the NAS in WIN11, which is not carried over to Mac, but he found a workaround, which works for me too). Maybe he can weigh in here too, see if he has similar issues and maybe found a workaround for that part too? When I create a backup of my LR Catalogs, I do that to a separate "backup" folder on the NAS, but as said, I am working big catalogs and the backup usually runs for an hour or even more, which I obviously can't do while I am working, but I try to do it once every couple of weeks before going to bed...

Hi GoldingD, So, my working projects are on my internal SSD of my MBP, but in my master catalog (whether it be "Private" or "Work" pictures), all the "other" edited RAW files, are on my Synology NAS. Once my files on my MBP internal SSD are processed, I export the jpegs and move the raws from my internal SSD to my NAS. Since Adobe doesn't want anyone to store CATALOGS on a NAS/networked drive, I have them on my internal SSD drive (catalog and helper/... files). Those catalog files etc are sync'ed by Synology Drive onto my Synology DS1821+ with 4 HDD's (14 Tb each), in SHR (Synology Hybrid Raid) using an M.2 NVMe drive as cache. This was done on a 1 GBe connection from my MBP to my NAS (which has 3 UTP cables attached with a load balance bond) until today, as I finally received my 10 Gbe PCIe card for the Synology today (and I already had a 10G OWC Thunderbolt 4 converter with a Cat7 cable attached). So this is all sync'ed onto my Synology and the Synology then syncs that data (again, only catalog files and helper,.. files for LRc) to my WIN11 Desktop PC and vice versa. So if I would open LR cat on my desktop pc, close it down, Synology drive would backup the cat file and all the changed helper files to the synology and then push that to my MBP (2 way sync). This goes pretty fast and I know for a fact, that I always wait until this sync is done (verifying that "saved at" timestamp matches on the machine I last worked on the files to the one I want to open/edit on). But as said, I am using my MBP 99% of the time, as it is faster than my PC. Also fact : I didn't open the corrupted LR cat on my PC before it got corrupted. So I was editing on my MBP, closed LRc correctly (for example to open another cat), then went back to the one I was working on, using the same machine and then I would sometimes get a notification that the LR cat was corrupt and needed to rebuild.. Hope that makes sense and provides enough information?

Hi Johan, Thanks a lot for clarifying. However, I am interested in where the helper files/... are so I can rename them, or what would be the suggested course of action I can undertake to *hopefully* solve the issues I am having? I also think that it's likely Synology that changes the name of the lr catalog file due to sync issues (although that is very weird, as I am usually only working from my MBP, thus files in the Synology Drive (or my desktop), should not have been changed at all...

Preference file location given here: https://www.lightroomqueen.com/how-do-i-reset-lightrooms-preferences/ An old copy of preferences is nice to have, but you want to make a copy of your preferences as they exist today before deleting the preference file. I don't understand what you are saying in this sentence. I think you are saying something important, but I simply don't understand. I have an old copy somewhere I'm sure, but just copying over all the Adobe files under roaming (20Gb). By @dj_paige Sorry, forgot to answer this part - on my machine, I have AppData\Roaming\Adobe, with a lot of different files in, which I copied all (also Camera Raw, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc), which altogheter amounts to a whopping 20Gb...

Here goes nothing... 😮 Hope it'll work. So when I did the "reset all preferences and relaunch", I was greeted with "Lightroom catalog was not found." Which is very strange.. Anyway, I have selected the correct one by searching for the LRcat and opened it. I did lose some of the plugins I installed, which is pretty crappy, so hope that if I can undo the reset, it all magically comes back again. Anyway, I still can't export the virtual copies with the missing data... 😞 Any other ideas that I can try?

Hi and thanks for your quick reply! I turned the GPU accelaration to OFF first, but have just tried by using the suggested approach in just disabling the GPU export option, but it doesn't change anything for the export of the virtual copies.. Just to 100% sure : (on WIN11), the preferences file that I want to make a copy of, is located :\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Adobe, correct? I have an old copy somewhere I'm sure, but just copying over all the Adobe files under roaming (20Gb).

Interesting, I didn't have so many corrupt catalogs in years, it was only after looking for a more centralized option of storing photos on a NAS, that I am sometimes running into these corrupt catalogs, but as said, when I turned off Synology Drive backups (40 days), I didn't have any issues with corrupted LR catalogs. And to be honest, I don't always do a backup of my catalogs when shutting down, as I often switch between 2 master catalogs (work and private) and sometimes another 'travel/on the road' catalog. My master catalogs house around 70k RAWS and the other around 160k (reason for getting the NAS is that those images eat a lot of HDD space 🙂 ). In my case, apparently, it does not rename the catalog after the repair. I am intrigued by the manual operation though - Do you mean that after repair, I have to check the name of the catalog (it often renames itself to "Lightroom Catalog private-v13_MacBook-Pro-van-Robert.local_Dec-25-185107-2023_Conflict-2" the bold text is what is added by LR. I have sometimes deleted the "new" part in the past and checked the other "sidecar" files for naming and if applicable, changed those too, but that still didn't "attach" the smart previews, local adjustments etc to it again. Is it something like that what you mean? All the help is greatly appreciated!

Hi dj_paige, Thanks for chiming in. I have also tried exporting the edited raws on my WIN11 desktop PC and in one folder, I noticed one issue on 2 PSD files. Both showed a Black exclamation mark on the photo (library view - "Lightroom has encountered problems reading this photo), which I don't think I have seen when I was on my MBP (but it could have been there, as I didn't check in detail). When I went through explorer and viewed the files, tried opening them in PS, I had another error (photoshop could not open because an unexpected end-of-file was encountered). I have then looked up the two PSD files from an old backup, copied them over to the ext SSD (where I put the rest of the files) and all exported without issues... However, I still have two other old folders that I need to export, which don't have the same error with the black exclamation mark. I did however, copy over all the RAW files, incl the xmp files to the ext SSD location, but the export still encounters issues and I think it's always the same virtual copies that have the issue. What is weird, is that in grid view, all images appear, but when I go through them in the library or develop mode, some virtual copies, don't appear, the screen stays grey (background colour). Those virtual copies, along with the "working" virtual copies, do not appear to have any metadata (lens/camera info, date/time,..) Also, the metadata options (rightclick) on the virtual copies (working and non-working), stay greyed out, the originals are fine to change (save metadata to file/ read metadata from file). There are no errors to be seen on the files or virtual copies in the grid view, but I do think that images where I don't see the image of the virtual copy in library/develop mode, is then ones the export is hanging on.. This is partially confirmed by the fact that when I select "Attribute" and then "kind - originals" and export those, I have NO issues with the export. I have disabled my hardware GPU acceleration, but that didn't help either (Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Trio Super 8Gb). But that seems to have been weird, as it also happened on my MBP, which obviously uses different hardware. I did not reset my preferences yet, as I have a lot of custom stuff setup, which I don't want to loose or having to setup again on a "maybe" (add-ons, publish services, self-made presets, bought presets, etc). Especcially because I feel it's having to do with the virtual copies, not the originals themselves...

Thank you for your reply, JohanElzenga and I do realize it's not supported, and I am storing the catalogs on my internal SSD, but they are just being synched to synology drive and my PC. There is nothing happening for the last few months from my PC side, but I need and want to have the option to edit LRc from there too, that is why it was set up that way. (And to be honest, I didn't think my MBP 14' would dramatically outperform my specially built WIN11 PC with all the best and fastest components for LRc use (looking at the hardware tests from Puget Systems and benchmark testing)). But that is a bit beside the point.. I just need and want to export my RAWs with my edits from my catalog 🙂

Hi GoldingD, since Adobe doesn't want you to keep LR Cats on a network drive, it is on my internal SSD (and then synced through Synology Drive to the Synology and then to my Desktop PC). But, I have been using only my MBP for months now and the sync with Synology Drive has been 'suspended' for the last 40 days, as I would sometimes get corrupted catalogs, which I think is the reason (synology drive sync, or possibly a network glitch which causes an issue - I haven't had an issue when it was 'suspended'). I have however, always been able to successfully rebuild the corrupted catalog(s), the only thing was, that I always had to rebuild the smart previews and update the AI settings (local adjustments using subject selection). I have also noticed that virtual copies seems to have lost some of the metadata (which lens, focal lenght and camera settings, I think date and time are still there, yet it always puts the virtual copies (b&w) in my library first, grouped together, then followed by the original raws, after all the B&Ws. whereas it should be original (colour), followed by a B&W image... The catalogs work fine for the rest of the time, just exporting is an issue (even when it's on the external SSD, but I have also tried moving the raws to my internal SSD in the past, to no avail).

Hi All, I am a professional photographer, and know Lightroom pretty much inside and out. However, since a few months now, I am having difficulties exporting photos, which are located on my NAS, but I even copied the raw files over to my external SSD (Sandisk extreme Pro V2 4Tb) and still, it is exporting images upto a certain point and then stops the export. Some collections export as expected, while some just "hang". I am just exporting edited raw files to jpeg (high res) with jpeg mini plugin installed to limit file size, but I have also turned off jpeg mini pro and tried the export that way, but it doesn't help either. I can't see weird things in my RAW images in LR and the pictures/RAWs are all linked correctly. Some had a metadata issue, but I have overwritten the metadata of the files with issues in LR, which also doesn't do anything... I have even tried to export the collection in smaller parts (24 images, but even that 'hangs'). Seems it is often hanging on the same image, but as stated, when I look that up, I can't find anything wrong with the RAWfile. Any other ideas I can try? Thank you in advance, I really need to get some of these images to a few clients. Best regards, DrBobke

Hi all, I am a photographer and have a Synology DS1821+ with currently 4 HDD's to store my RAW files (and M.2 ssd cache), while I usually edit on my MBP 2022 14' M1 Max, but I sometimes also go on my self-built WIN11 desktop. Currently, the Synology is in SHR and was reading up on LUN and iSCSI, which I installed as a test on my Synology (all is working well with the setup). This allows me to connect to my Synology on my WIN11 pc as an external HDD, so that I can have Backblaze back-up all that data, without having to pay a lot more for the Backblaze business plan (for backing up a NAS)... Currently, I have setup my NIC (synology) with a bond of 3 UTP's and pointed the LUN to that IP. I have ordered another PCIe double 10 GBe NIC to connect via an OWC Thunderbolt4 10G converter, so I can edit and export (hopefully) a lot faster. My Synology is accessible from outside my home network (when I am shooting remotely, but still need to access my images/catalogs), but I am not sure if/or I can connect to the LUN/iSCSI target in that same way remotely (I would likely use the 3 UTP connected NIC for Internet/remote access use) and internally the 10G connection - I live in Belgium, so my max upload speed is around 28/29Mb anyway. Is the LUN/iSCSI "protected" by SHR in case of drive failure? Another reason for wanting to investigate the LUN/iSCSI target, is that I notice issues with my LR catalogs. All cats are on my internal SSD, synched via Synology Drive and to my desktop and vice versa. However, sometimes, I notice that my catalogs are becoming corrupt and need to rebuild, which always succeeds (luckily), but I also notice that in the process, it seems to delete/forget/disconnect the smart previews and deletes the AI local adjustment settings (subject selection) and even the metadata (which lens was used, camera, etc). I can easily redo the Smart previews and and the rebuild the AI local adjustments, but that takes at least 2/3 days to do on per master catalog (of which I have 2), the missing metadata seems to be lost forever. It is then also grouping my Virtual copies in B&W together, separate to the original files (but still in the same folder) messing up the whole catalog structure in the process. Does anyone know if using a LUN/iSCSI target will reduce the corrupt catalogs? It definitely has to do with Synology Drive (or potentially a network cable disconnect), as since I paused Synology Drive, I don't have the issues with the corrupt catalogs anymore. So 4 main questions : 1. Can I somehow access LUN/iSCSI remotely through my Synology, or can that only be achieved when using for example Anydesk? 2. Are the files in the LUN protected in case of Drive failure by the SHR? 3. Can LUN/iSCSI target help to reduce corrupt catalogs? 4. Does anyone have similar issues with corrupt catalogs and missing metadata while storing RAW files on a NAS? Thank you in advance, best regards, DrBobke

Thanks Johan, that is what I suggested myself in the original post too, but ideally, I would like to have the option in the preset menu. Sort of 'set it and forget it' kind of thing... That way would add another step in the workflow, which I would like to prevent. 🙂 but thank you for your comment nonetheless

Hi girls 'n guys, I am a longtime user of LightRoom Classic (before it was even called 'Classic'). I have a few presets that I have made myself and have been using them for years and tweaked them along the way, including subject selections etc in more recent years. One of the steps it does, is apply lens correction, which, for the most part, I do like. However, I am also shooting a lot of people with my Canon 16-35 f2.8L iii lens and I tend to shoot really close. But I never like what profile corrections is doing, especially in the 16-20mm range. The same for my SIGMA 14-24 f2.8 lens. Ideally, I would like to input somewhere that the preset should not enable (or disable) lens profile corrections for the range of 14-22-ish mm. If that is not possible, I would be okay to take out corrections for the two lenses mentioned above. I know that there is an ISO-specific setting for adding presets, but I can't find any for focal lenghts or specific lenses. Does anybody know if this is at all possible? I would prefer to set it straight into my main preset(s) and not add another step in my workflow, select focal ranges through metadata, select one photo, disable profile correction for image one and then sync it all (or make a preset to disable profile corrections). Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance, best regards, DrBobke

Hi all, I've tried all of that, but it doesn't help. The only thing that sort of helps, is opening OBS screen recorder and start recording my screen. When doing that, I can't seem to recreate the error. When it is off, I can create the masks/local adjustments and then subtract where I don't want the adjustment. Say I have a local adjustment on a picture with a few people on. The person on the right is closer to me, so the flash hit him/her a little more. I select subject automatically and the person on the right is also selected. I then go into my local adjustment, hit subtract and put a linear gradient on top of the person, problem solved. I can do this for a few images, but then all of the sudden, without really any sort of change, I can hit the subtract (or add) all that I want, nothing happens. When I say all of the sudden - there is no measure of time (like 5 min for example), nor the amount of edited pictures,.. when it happens. Unless I am recoring my screen, it is usually after having edited 5-10 pictures though. When I click out of LRc and then back in, it usually works again. As said, I have tried recording my screen a bunch of times now, but then, it doesn't happen.. Very strange stuff. Also tried downgrading to a previous version of LRc, but the same thing happens.

Hi everyone, I have been using LR since forever and I even teach this. However, since a recent update, I notice that adding and subtracting to/from masks, is not available anymore. So, say I made a gradient mask, but want to subtract a part of the effect with another gradient, I can't do that anymore. This is a vital part of my workflow. The add/subtract part inside the mask is not greyed out or anything, but when I click on it, it doesn't show the options anymore (like brush, gradient, radial, etc). Update : When writing this post, I was going back and forth in LRc and then to the article and it seems that when I click out of LRc and then back in, I can get into the menu of the add/subtract to/from the mask, but when I go to the next picture and try, I am not able to anymore, until I click out of LRc and back in. Very strange behaviour! I already rebooted my machine (MacBook pro, M1 Max, 64 GB Ram, 2 TB SSD), which is running the latest IoS and Latest LRc (I have Adobe Creative Cloud). Lightroom Classic version: 13.0.1 [ 202310121438-d2af310c ] Operating system: Mac OS 14 Version: 14.0.0 [23A344] Ideally, I don't want to revert back to another version to test if it works there, as I have a lot of work to catch up on. Anyone else with these issues? Thank you in advance, Best regards, DrBobke

I have just killed the task and rebooted. I then opened the "conflict catalogue" (which I assume is an error caused by Synology drive for some reason I don't understand, as I alost exclusively edit on my MacBook now, as it is a lot faster than my specially built WIN11 pc for LR editing). Anyway, I am doing a lot with masking and AI-masking and I have noticed a lot of times in the past (and now too), that the RAW images housed on the NAS, loose their AI masking when this unexpected crash of LR happens. This means I have to redo the AI masks (typically on the NAS, not the ones on the internal SSD), and the smart previews for all images that were also lost. That will cost me a lot of hours to rebuild again (I usually put that task on to do overnight, but it's 125k ish images - probably about 15k ish have ai masking applied).

I am having the same issues for some time now. I am also running an M1 Max, updated both ios, and LR to the latest version. I seem to have the issue when I am editing and then make a virtual copy of an image (different crop or to make into B&W). It doesn't happen all the time, just sometimes. But now, it has been repairing the catalog for nearly 4 hours (and counting) and seems to be in the stage of 'optimizing catalog'. This master catalog has all my work-files and has around 125k images (all RAW). I was editing a current project on the internal SSD, the other images are on my Synology NAS. I am trying to catch up on some work, but I can't do that when LR quits like this. Not sure what to do now, wait for it to finish, or kill the task as it is presumably stuck? I can still click away from the bar showing and the bar goes grey, when I click on it again, it turns blue, so seems like it's not stuck, just taking a loooong time..

I've had the same issues with Photoshop Beta. I ended up removing PS Beta and reïnstalling PS (again), very frustrating as this happened while I was being interviewed for an online photography magazine academy on how I edit my pictures. Anyway, I redid all the disk access things again (removing PS and LR from the full disk access menu, closing down the menu, restarting the menu and added both again). It did not work. I have spent hours again, trying to correct the situation. Afterwards, I gave up and rebooted my system, which then seemed to work. (I could edit in PS again), but not sure if this was due to other things I was trying to do to get my system running. Anyway, a workaround I have found that actually works, is putting the raw files on an external SSD (I have a fast Sandisk Extreme Pro, 4Tb). Going that route works for edit in PS. It's not perfect and for obvious reasons and being more mobile, I want to edit off the internal SSD in my MBP. But it works for me in a bind and not wanting to spend another couple of hours trying to right a known issue in Adobe/Apple configuration. Hope this works for you too until they get around to fixing it (if they ever do, as it seems Adobe is not really righting problems raised in the forums)... Have a great day, DrBobke

This did the trick for me too. However, when I was on my Mac, I still had to re-update LR to the correct folder (which thankfully worked then). But does this mean I will have to update the folder location everytime when I go from my Mac to my PC and vice versa? This would also mean I'd have to update folder location to Mac every time I leave the house, in order to be able to work on the go. When the folder was not 'active', it didn't see all the smart previews that were rendered in my 80k+ images cat and on the other 130k+ catalogs (I am using two master catalogs, one for private work, the other for paid work).

So I guess it's the right answer, but I don't understand how it's listed and on in the full disk access list (and I am 100% sure it's the right app/year), yet it's not giving proper access rights. There should be a pop-up from PS/Adobe saying it can't open because of access right issues or something. I have spent HOURS on this to solve... Thanks again for your reaction. Hi all,
This is soooo enfuriating, I am paying to use LR and PS, not making sure I am spending hours on a regular basis, almost every time you decide to push an update.
I am using a MacBook Pro (2022), M1 Max, 64 Gb RAM, fully spec'ed. LR and PS are the latest version of each in CC.
Every few months, the same thing happens, that after doing an update, I cannot edit in PS from Lightroom classic anymore. Last week, this was working fine. So far, I have spent over 3 hours in getting it to work and really need to edit a Newborn session I shot, I am doing some basic edits in LR and then to PS for more rigorous work.
I have already removed PS from my Mac, rebooted and reinstalled (soft, so keeping all my settings etc). And YES, I do want to keep all my custom set brushes etc. Last time, because Adobe did something, I lost all of my self created brushes, presets, actions, etc. It has cost me weeks to redo everything, because even though you have set it to back up those files and save them, they are not actually saved (thank you for that bug). Since it didn't work after reinstalling and rebooting my machine again, I tried it again, no luck.
I removed PS again and rebooted, reinstalled, rebooted --> tried again, still nothing.
Removed PS AND LR (keep settings) and rebooted. Then installed it again, hoping that would solve the issue - still not. On my desktop PC (also a very powerful machine, this works like a charm), but my Macbook is faster and it should just work.
PS is actually opening, but then nothing happens. In the beginning, I was greeted with a pop up if I wanted to create a document. when pressing No or cancel, I just get to see the last photos I have been editing in PS. when I hit yes, I see a white-ish rectangle, as a piece of paper, but not my photo. After the reinstallations, this is not popping up anymore, nor is the picture I am trying to edit.
All my raw files (CR3, Canon R5), are on the SSD of my Macbook and all are "assigned" (not missing photos). I am a lllooooooooooong time user of LR and PS (since before LR v3) and I know what I am doing, but this issue is just crazy, especcially as it happens multiple times a year. As said, last time, it was fixed with removing everything and recreating EVERYTHING from scratch, which cost me weeks, if this will happen again, I will move away from Adobe. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance

Too bad it doesn't work for you to use an external ssd. I think it is strange that that does work (I actually just thought to try it for the fun of it, but it actually works here). Hopefully they will get back to you with a fix which actually works, as this is é&"'!èçà !!! Especcially reading you had to redo everything, settings, program installation,.. that would take over a day here to do all that.. Maybe when enough people chime in with the same issues, Adobe will 'have' to look at this? But I assume they don't care enough, if it works for 99% of the people... 😞

I do think it is strange it seems to happen by itself and only on Mac and not after an update...? At least, I think we are all using Mac, didn't neccessarily all updated anything and we started experiencing these issues then, no? Update - It's not working again here... I can't edit in PS anymore from my internal ssd.. Copying over the catalog to the SSD and opening from there, it does want to open in /Edit in PS. Hopefully this helps to pinpoint the problem from the Adobe team??

I think I have just solved the issue - when I go (on the mac) into settings (or system preferences) --> security & privacy --> Full Disk access --> Click the padlock bottom left and insert your password --> now click the + sign and add (from Apps) Photoshop and Lightroom, which did the trick for me... Very strange that this has happened by itself, as I didn't change anything and it worked over the weekend just fine.... Hopefully this can help others too?

Just an update - I wanted to test if there was a difference in opening the LR cat from an external SSD. It turns out, when I am opening LR cat from my internal SSD, I cannot edit in PS (PS opens, but nothing happens). When I copy over the LR cat to an external SSD, everything works as expected and I can edit in PS just fine. This is extremely weird, so I am thinking it might have to do with some disk permissions. However, I am new to Mac OS and don't really have an idea where to start looking.. Someone have an idea that will help?
