Hi,

We are seeing cases of adobe auto upgrading from 32 bit to 64 bit. We need to stop this as applications that hook into reader are not 64 bit.

I have tried the Registry key "Key:  bUpdateToSingleApp  , Value = 0 , type = dword

Location : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\DC\FeatureLockDown" recommended on another post, this has NOT worked.

Please advise how we can stop this occuring as this is a Citrix environment this is happening which causes Adobe to not launch following your forced "upgrade".

Reader Version: 2021.007.20091.

Thanks,

Ryan

Dear user, the fixes for this issue have been applied in the latest release so that Reader will not upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit machines on Sever OS machines.

You can get the latest version of 32-bit Reader from:
https://get.adobe.com/reader/otherversions/

First, download the 32-bit version of Adobe Acrobat DC Reader by first navigating to this site.

Download Adobe Acrobat Reader DC | Free PDF viewer | Windows, Mac, iOS, Android

Click on the ‘Do you have a different language or operating system’ link as highlighted below.

Choose the appropriate Operating System from the drop-down menu.

Choose ‘English’ as the language from the drop-down menu.

Select the 32-bit version of Adobe Acrobat DC Reader from the drop-down menu.

Unselect all the additional, bloatware options as shown below and then click on Download Acrobat Reader.

Log in to the server.

Uninstall Adobe Acrobat DC Reader (64-bit) from Add/Remove Programs.

Restart Server.

Use the 32-bit installer downloaded earlier to install on the server (ensure in RDS Install mode on Terminal Servers).

Once installed successfully, follow the next steps straight away.

Step 1. Disable Adobe Acrobat Update Task.

The first step to disable the Automatic Update in Adobe Reader is to disable the 'Adobe Acrobat Update Task' in Task Scheduler. To do that:

At the search box, type: task scheduler

Open Task scheduler

Click at Task Schedule Library at the left and then, at the right pane, right click at the Adobe Acrobat Update Task at select Disable.

Close Task Scheduler and continue to the next step.

Step 2. Disable Adobe Acrobat Update Service.

The next step is to disable the Acrobat Update service, by using one of the methods below:

Simultaneously press Windows R  keys to open run command box.

In run command box, type: services.msc and press Enter.

Double click to open "Adobe Acrobat Update Service" properties (AdobeARMservice).

Set the Startup type to Disabled.

Click OK and restart your computer.

Disable Adobe Reader DC Automatic Updates via Registry.Open Windows Registry Editor. To do that:Press the Windows + R keys to load the Run dialog box.

Type regedit and press Enter.

At the left pane, navigate to this key:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Adobe\Adobe ARM\Legacy\(product name)\(product code)

e.g., HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Adobe\Adobe ARM\Legacy\Reader\{AC76BA86-7AD7-1033-7B44-AC0F074E4100}

At the right pane double click at Mode value* and at the Value Data box, change the value data from to 0 (zero).

Mode possible values:
0: Do not download or install updates automatically.
2: Automatically download updates but let the user choose when to install them.
3: Automatically download and install updates. (Default value)
4: Notify the user downloads are available but do not download them.

Close Registry Editor and restart your computer.

- From now on, Adobe Reader DC will not download and install updates automatically, but you can always install the new updates manually, by choosing the Check for Updates option in Adobe Reader's DC main menu. (Help > Check for Updates) *

* Note: If you want to remove the Check for Updates option, then follow the steps below.

Extra: Remove the "Check for Updates" option from Adobe Reader's menu.

Launch Registry Editor again and navigate to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\DC\FeatureLockDownRight click at an empty space on the right pane and select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.

Name the new value: bUpdaterDouble click at the bUpdater value and set the Value Data to 0 (zero).

Close Registry Editor and Reboot your computer.

The steps I have provided above are the only method that has resolved the issue for me.

Done completely and correctly, will resolve the issue.

I have successfully done this across dozens, if not more, terminal servers.

Acrobat Reader is STILL automatically updating from 32 bit to 64 bit version. This is causing huge problems because some proprietory software needs the 32 bit version in order to work. Please help. I have tried all the registry changes as well as services.msc and task scheduler changes.

You've linked this exact same method numerous times and had numerous people say "it doesn't work", because it doesn't work.

We've implemented those changes at multiple sites and your product still "upgrades" to 64bit...

I have used all the methods on this page and have had success with all of it. I do everything and so far all of the installs I manage (around 15) have stayed at 32bit. I make sure to not open reader until after i have made all the changes to the scheduler, services, registry and have rebooted. This seems to be working for my clients computers well.
