P: Photoshop 25.0 Graphics Processor Compatibility Check fails: Unknown GPU

Hello, I just updated to Photoshop 2024 but I cannot get it to work with GPU acceleration. When I start Photoshop, I get this error:

I am running a Windows 10 PC with two Nvidia RTX 3090 video cards and a 5950x CPU.

So far, I have tried:

- Setting Photoshop and sniffer.exe to use my, uh, 'high performance 3090' as opposed to my 'power saving' 3090 (excellent work, Windows)

- Updated to the latest Nvidia studio drivers and installed all Windows 10 updates

- Removed 'sniffer.exe' from the Photoshop folder as suggested, causes Photoshop to not boot.

- Enabled "Older GPU Mode" in the Technology Previews, get same error so I disabled it again.

- Tried setting the GPU in Nvidia Control Panel, but I don't have a "Preferred GPU" setting like a laptop or PC with integrated graphics.

- Disabled SLI

- Uninstalled and reinstalled Photoshop 2024

- Manually ran sniffer.exe, it sees the video cards just fine

Try the suggestion at the very end of the following Adobe KB

6. Check and delete the TempDisableGPU3 or TempDisableGPU2 files

Are you sure GPU is properly connected? You can roll back, by the way, to install previous working version.

Jeff: Thanks, I tried checking the CameraRaw\GPU folder, but there were no TempDisableGPU files in any of the subfolders

Bojan: The GPUs seem to be connected just fine (PCI, power, and NVLink) and work in all other software

I'll just have to keep using Photoshop 22, as it works fine there too:

The error message stating "It looks like your local server isn't running, Please start the server and reload the plugin" makes it sound to me like there is a service that isn't running. I've gone through all of my services and don't see anything Adobe, Photoshop, or CC related that are disabled. sniffer.exe, the helper executable that Photoshop uses to identify GPUs also works just fine, so whatever 'local server' Photoshop uses to call sniffer.exe appears to have failed

Hi,

I also started in latest updates for Photoshop 2024 to get Unknown GPU error. I have 2 GPU's - GTX1070 and GT1080Ti.

There was NO PROBLEMS before latest updates from Adobe.

Nvidia drivers used are latest studio - 546.01.

This is very FRUSTRATING.

Sniffer.exe recognise the GPU's fine.

Also, after latest updates Photoshop is not closing after exist - I need to close it from Task Manager.

Also - updates are failed, till I close/kill Sniffer from Task Manager again.

Really GOOD JOB Adobe!

Looks like both system info's shared include Topaz plugins; can you try turning those off to see if the problem still happens?

I had the same problem since PS25 on Windows 10 (latest patch version). GPU incompatibility. I researched and tried a lot of those workarounds that all try to blame the problem on my system or on Windows. Nothing helped. PS23 and PS24 work fine and give no GPU error. Both my GPUs are way above min specs. After some very frustrating experiences with Adobe's clueless and unhelpful support agents and because I suspected sniffer.exe from the start I did an experiment.

- I renamed sniffer.exe in the PS25 folder in Program Files to _sniffer.exe

- I copied sniffer.exe from the still existing PS23 folder to the PS25 folder.

Photoshop starts up without any problem and the GPU is recognized correctly. So as I already told you in my relevant ticket: sniffer.exe is the culprit and needs to be fixed.

Others with this problem can try my workaround in using an older sniffer.exe.

We are seeing sniffer take 19 seconds to run when part of the Photoshop startup sequence, but run instantly outside of Ps, so someting is gumming up the works when happening with the Ps startup. You also have dual GPUs?

The GPU is used for data processing, it's not a simple one-way downstream flow. Dual GPUs often conflict (and this is a never-ending problem in laptops).

I've noticed a lot of issues with AMD Ryzen lately (e.g. the OP here), for none of the usual reasons. There just seems to be a lot of inexplicable GPU crashing and non-recognition of the GPU. I honestly don't know what to tell these users - other than that there seems to be some connection to the BIOS. Is this something that is being investigated, or is there any light that can be shed on this?

I have read all that. First: I do not use a laptop, I have two Nvidia GPUs that use the same driver in a desktop computer. Multiple GPUs is completely normal nowadays especially if you work with graphics or 3D software or multiple monitors. Adobe should make sure their software is up to the 21st century.

Adobe support let me jump through all kinds of senseless hoops and I already had read all "suggestions" to solve this problem without any solution that works, they still tried to make me all that stuff again without listening to me that I already had (I work in IT for decades, I know my way around computers and software and I usually extensively try to solve problems myself before going to support). I had to find a solution myself.

I am not interested in third party or peer user advise here, I am only posting in this thread because Adobe support told me to post my experiences in this post and they already said they acknowledge the problem and my solution and they will roll out a fix.

My system in not laptop. Also, I CAN'T disable any of GPU's, because I use BOTH for rendering tasks and etc.

We need solution for this issue ASAP.

It WAS WORKED before latest Adobe updates in 2024 and 2025 BETA.

Issue COULD be in Nvidia drivers or in Adobe updates.

I think it's mostly from Adobe updates, because we have issues with Sniffer not closing and Photoshop.exe not closing and staying in Memory, so I need to kill it from Task Manager to be able to start new sesion.

@Nik Nastev since this works flawlessly in PS23 and PS24 and since if I copy the PS23 sniffer.exe to the PS25 program folder it also works, this definitely is not a driver or Windows problem, but a bug that Adobe created in PS25. Most probably in sniffer.exe.

I agree. As I already mentioned sniffer is not closing and prevent any photshop update, until I kill it in Task Manager. Plus, it creates many instances in task manager, sometimes 10 copies.

Just installed 24.7.2 version and guess what - it is working just fine with GPU's.

So, Adobe, please fix a bug in sniffer.exe.

Actualy 2 bugs - one is not recognising GPU's in multi GPU config and second - not closing sniffer.exe.

Update:

I copied sniffer.exe from 24.7.2 to 25 and BETA - and IT's WORKING.

Sniffer.exe is BROKEN in latest versions.

How QA did manage to not find this???

This issue is perplexing; swapping out the version of sniffer seems to help, so that may be the right move in the short term.

One thing we did discover is that removing sniffer entirely doesn't work (Photoshop doesn't like to startup on Windows), so that is yet another thing we'll attend to.

We are putting together a multiple GPU system to see whether that might be a trigger of some sort, but to be honest, the system infos all shared around this issue so far indicate a large number of variables; many plugins, drivers, hardware, etc. Getting a dual GPU system of any stripe up and running may not be sufficient. But we're digging into it.

Expectations-wise, we will have a release coming up soon that will not address this issue because the timing just isn't in our favor, but it the issue is not being ignored.

Just in case - latest sniffer.exe in 2025 and BETA have smaller file size, compared to 2024 version.

Probably something is missing in latest version of sniffer or disabled inside it, before compiling exe.
