Issue: Action don't save file in same folder

  • Photoshop version: Adobe Photoshop 2022 24.0.0
  • OS: Win 10

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open any image
  2. Write an action with save:
  3. "Window" - "Actions" - opens Actions in left panel
  4. Press in Actions left panel symbol "+" (Add new action)
  5. Give some name to new action. Chose  "File" in top panel, then "save" or "save as" and save file in the SAME FOLDER.
  6. Stop writing an action by pressing "square" symbol in Actions panel
  7. Check "Open dialog window" in front of name of this action (it helps to see immideatly that action don't work correctly))
  8. Open another file from another location
  9. Press "play" in Actions panel to apply this action

Expected result: Action shows folder of current file and saves automatically in there.
Actual result: Action shows folder, in which was saved previous file, not the folder of current file store. And more - if the previos file was deleted, it change the name of file to name of last folder.

For example: C:\February\item580\Черный\ph-0.jpg

If "ph-0.jpg" is deleted, save action will name file "Черный.jpg"

After renewig way of saving files instead "Save as" I can't save in same folder via Action, no matter which preferences I choose. If I save file manually, it works properly. But Action shows me folder, in which was saved previous file, not the folder of current file store.

In old version PS 2020 all my Actions work properly. All saving preferenses "Legacy" are checked.

Please don't advise me to use Scripts like Image Processor or Automate Batch Process, I have complicated system of folders and need to save files carefully to same folder. What is wrong with saving via Action? Can it be because of translated Photoshop or different system language?

Hi @kubilus

Thanks for highlighting this.

What error message do you see; Is it a blank dialog box? Do you get it while saving a file?

Did you notice this after the update?

You may try resetting Photoshop preferences back to defaults and check if that helps. Here's the article for the steps: https://adobe.ly/3ceal5t

Also, back up the existing Photoshop preferences if you have any custom brushes, action, and workspace: https://adobe.ly/2vNz6FG

We're here to help, need some info.

In Photoshop 24.3.0 on MacOS 13.2.1 a plain »Save« as recorded in an Action or inserted from the Menu Items does not seem to work.

Hello,

Since the update I installed yesterday 'save' does not work as part of an action anymore 😩, any ideas?

Using a 2023 Macbook Pro - Apple Silicon Apple M2 Max 96GB RAM and 1.83TB free space.

It worked fine before the update, I tried re-recording this very simple action and it still doesn't work.

Cheers SJ

It gets stuck here, in case the screen recording doesn't show.

I have a long list of recorded actions to help me resize images (I use these every day!), but since the latest photoshop update, each one of them is failing when it gets to the 'Save' command.

Ideas, please?!

Hi @KPig

Thanks for reaching out.

Would you mind sharing more details on this? Do you see any error messages?

What is the action about?

Please try saving the files to Cloud and let us know if that helps.

Best,

Ranjisha

Hello,

All my actions that contain a "Save" (not Save As) step fail and halt with this error modall: "Could not complete the command because of a program error". Independent "Save" works as usual. Only in an Action saving fails.
I've made sure Photoshop was allowed Full Disk access. I've even rebooted my Mac.

I've reverted to 24.2 and it works back again,  hopefully. Thanks for allowing reverting to a previous version.

I've also tryied with the latest Beta ... same problem.

Pleas fix this issue otherwise I'm stuck with V24.2 for long.
Best regards,

Thierry

Hi @TVNshack did you re-record or update your action after updating?

Did you confirm under Preferences/File Handling that "Use Legacy Save As" is checked?

Hello

Indeed. I tried first removing the Save step (because it was annoying to always have to acknowledge to the Modall)

Then I recorded that action step again reinstating the Save step as last step … with the same results.

I checked that Photoshop was allowed Full Disk Access … and even rebooted the Mac (Big Sur 11.7.4)

I downloaded the newly posted Beta upgrade to check if the problem only existed with 24.3 … and it fais to on 24.4

Best regards
Thierry

Didn't see that question ...

No, it's not checked. I've just tried cheking it on the Beta version (because I've reverted to 24.2 to get my work done) ... and it's the same "Could not complete the command because of a program error". Thank you for helping out.

It's been well documented in here that changing the Save As to use "Legacy" resolves previously recorded actions Save tasks.

When you have time you may want to rebuild the action with that function on and see if the same error occurs on 24.3.

Hello,

I've just tried it as instructed on V24.4 (V24.3 is uninstalled for 24.2 as I need to get my work done). Beta V24.4 has the exact same problem (inherited from V24.3 I presume).

I've opened V24.4 and removed the "Save" step of my an Action.
I've checked the "Legacy Save As" Preference
I've closed V24.4 and reopened it
I've added back the "Save" step at the and of that Action and tried it.
--> Same problem "Could not complete the command because of a program error" Modall.

I confirm the problem. It's a regression as up to V24.2, it has always worked cleany.

Thanks and regards,

Thierry

I get exactly the same thing today, photoshop updated this morning. I have several actions that finish with a save, and they all fail. It pops up the dialog box "Could not complete the command because of a program error."

The simplest action I have is just a save (Control-S) and close (Control-W)

Note that is even fails if the image hasn't been modified, so the save isn't doing anything.
