Adobe, Linux Support, and the Linux Foundation.

While generally I've only lurked the Adobe forums I've finally worked up guts to post this. I also know that about every 1-2 months this question is asked but I think it deserves a another go around.

My premises is this:

Adobe joined the Linux Foundation in 2008 for a focus on Linux for Web 2.0  Applications like Adobe® Flash® Player and Adobe AIR™. Currently Adobe holds a silver membership status with the Linux Foundation. So why in the world do they not have any Creative Cloud Programs available in Linux without the need for WINE and other such workarounds. I think it's a sucky move to support the Linux Foundation and use Linux in the back-end while not doing anything to support actual Linux users who have for at least a decade requested Adobe desktop products on Linux. Sure it's going to take a lot of manpower, financial resources, etc. But to truly support Linux and the Linux Foundation I think it's necessary that y'all do make things like Photoshop and Lightroom available for the Linux desktop. In any regards the wider Linux community would most likely help with testing and debugging programs. We're used to it.

Previous via Cloud https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/help/download-install-app.html

That link leads to these instructions:

Download more apps with Creative Cloud app:

To open the Creative Cloud desktop app, click the Creative Cloud icon, located in the taskbar (Windows) or Apple menu bar (Mac OS).

If it’s not already selected, click the Apps tab at the top of the window.

You will see your installed app, as well as a list of other apps you can browse and install.

In the Find Additional Apps section, scroll to find the app you want to install.

Click Install, and your app will begin to download.

There is no "Find Additional Apps" section; only "All Apps" or "Installed Apps". Under All Apps, I have "My Apps & Services" and "Trial Apps". I tried searching on CS6 and it took me to stock images on the Adobe website.

correct... Adobe changed everything about it and just assumed the new system would be so clear that people don't need help files anymore.

Yeah. Also, older apps (like Flash Builder) are still available by:

(three dots button) => Preferences => Creative Cloud => Apps => (checkbox) Show Older Apps

This is not really relevant to finding older version of main apps, but it might be helpful none-the-less.

Hi John,

That trustworthy old link is really no longer relevant for accessing Previous Versions given the brand new UI of the latest Cloud desktop app 4.3.0.256 which Adobe released under the radar last week.

Guess those pages will always change. That particular one has served us well for a couple of years. You must have pasted it thousands of times in your replies.

I do prefer the new Cloud app interface but, boy, Adobe love to slip out these changes unannounced - unless we're reading the release notes daily.

Well, I now have your reply #3 in Previous versions in my note file, so maybe Adobe will keep it the same for awhile and a few more answers when someone wants to use Encore with Premiere Pro CS6

I discovered that if I click the drop-down arrow under Photoshop, it gives me the option to install CS6 on my Win10 laptop. However, I want to download CS6 to install on my Ubuntu box. Any ideas?

kglad links in reply #1 here https://forums.adobe.com/thread/2365252 may help

-you will need to enter your original serial number during install for non-Cloud programs, so if you do not already own CS6 (Adobe stopped selling CS6 this past January) all you will get is a limited trial

Hi Gokhan,

As I understand that you have added a video that shows how to install Creative Cloud on Ubuntu/ Linux, however, as of now that option is not available.

You may Contact Customer Care for help and support.

Feel free to update the thread for any other questions.

Regards

Kanika

No joy. I get to the Adobe Installer and get this POL crash. Here are two screenshots. I tried leaving it alone, in case it was still running in the background, but it never returned.

Well, that let me install CC 2015. When it finished, the Application Manager had a "Run" option next to CC 2015. I ran it, and it worked!

However, after I closed it and ran PlayOnLinux again, CC 2015 was not in the program list, just the Application Manager. When I run that, CC 2015 shows "Up to date" and the option to run it is gone (see image).

So...how do I run CC 2015 now?

No advice? It's frustrating to finally have it installed and apparently working, but not be able to run it!

I think this thread has gotten slightly off track. It's not about getting an old Windows version to run on Linux using a hack, it's about Adobe creating a native version.

And until Adobe decides to do that, this is the only option. We can keep complaining about a long-standing problem that is out of our control, or we can try to find a workable solution.

Never mind. I figured out a workaround on my own that seems to work. No graphics tablet support, but I'll take it.

From the video, it looks like it's working to me. It may not be supported, but it's certainly an option for those interested, at least until Adobe realizes the user-base they are missing out on. It looks like the method only supports a few older apps at the moment based on the readme.md of the script developer.

This has been going on years. It makes me angry that a company with such a monopoly in this market is being so lazy and greedy.

You've clearly got the market need.

Please provide a clear route to at least Photoshop on Linux. Ideally the whole CC suite.

I truly believe your lack of action will be the end of your dominance. I hope so, anyway.

This isn't fair and you are showing a lack of care to your loyal fanbase.

This ruins your brand, for me. As soon as a decent alternative for Photoshop comes along, I will jump ship.

As you say, Linux has been requested for years - Cloud on Linux https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1057800

My opinion (I don't work for Adobe) is If you must use Linux, you are going to have to use different programs

It seems we will need to find alternatives - but it makes me very angry at Adobe that I either need to change apps or change OS's for their whim.

I use Linux because I'm a front-end programmer. I'm also a web designer that need Adobe.

They have been ignoring the needs of the users for the long-term.
