Just had this happen today right after rebooting my machine to resolve an error code 50, I waited about 5 minutes then clicked retry and the CC update started installing properly. My IT guy believes that it was due to a windows update going on in the background that had completed between the time the error first popped up and the time I clicked the retry button. Anecdotal evidence to be sure, but give it a try, it might save you the effort of going through the selective startup hoops posted above.

Oh, thank you SO much PureXIII. Came here after crazy search through adobe.com, which was no help at all. Shutting down the windows installers did indeed solve the error 87 problem on win10. THANK YOU again!!

I shut down all the processes that had "install" in the name -- two windows processes and an adobe process. And also the one-click thing from MS office, which also appears to be an installer. But then CC wouldn't come up at all. Rebooted at least twice and finally went online to the CC download page and started that process, which went very quickly (apparently detecting that I had a valid account), and after that did the updates flawlessly. I would still like to know where MS hides the error codes and what they mean.
