How do I retain background transparency when importing an image into FM?

What image format?
FM is pretty weak on this (and won't show it in preview during edit).
EPS vector line art can preserve transparency.
EPS raster art can have a clipping path honored.
(unsure about PDF and SVG for these cases)

By default, FM imports the graphics with a white fill (likewise it also creates Anchored frames with a white fill as the default). First try setting the graphic and AFrame with no fill. If this doesn't work, then you need to use the methods described in the paper that Bob provided the link to.

I set them with no shading and overprint in the fill object properties.

I imported the graphic as eps and put it over a dark blue background to test - the area where the image was transparent displayed as light blue as if it had merged 50:50 dark blue and white. I also set the distiller setting to transparency true which also did not improve things.

How exactly did you set the transparency in FM? Did you use the techniques in the PDF referenced? If so, what value did you use the /SetTransparency pdfmark statement?
