I just received some files from one of our offices overseas. When I try to open the files I get this warning message "appear to be a FrameMaker document, it can't be opend with this release of the product". Now I'm using 2015 version 13.0.2.433. Any one have any ideas?

If the .fm was created in a later version of FM, you would get that dialog.

Ask them to resend as MIF (or use the .fm save option for earlier version).

Failing that, search on "heroic open" in the forum.

The error mesage means that the documents/files were created with a newer release of FM, i.e FM2017 or even FM2019. You can ask for the files to be sent as MIF versions, which your version will be able to open.

To check which version these files are, you can use a text editor than can open binary files to look at the first few ites in the file. The FM version that created the file will be listed.

I think that indicates FM2017 was used on it.

I just opened a file I have been using and it is

<MakerFile 13.0>

So I guess we are on the right track.

Before doing anything else, upgrade to the latest version of Fm 2015. I believe it is 13.0.5, but might only be 13.0.4.

This will solve your issue if the files were edited with a later version of Fm 2015.

You can also download a trial of Fm 2019, open, then save as MIF.

The resulting MIF files can then be opened in your Fm 13.0.2

I like this idea. I will need to try this and see if it fixes the issue. If so then I can ask my boos to buy the upgrade.

So Matt,

I'm guessing if I download the trial version, open the files as mil then save them as an older version I can work around this until I can get a upgrade.
