Can't Export Layered Illustrator File to a PSD

Using Illustrator ver 25.0 and have an .ai file with many layers. I want to export it as a layered PSD. It seems to begin the process but then abruptly ends (no error noted) and it doesn't create the PSD file.

I read elsewhere that in an earlier version of Illustrator there was a bug and you should make sure the folder's permissions are set correctly with read/write privileges (permissions are correct). And you should save it to another folder. Tried that and that didn't work either.

I have a lot of layers. Is it possible that it's too complicated to export? If so, what can I do? I need to be able to have each part of the image on separate layers.

It's possible that the file is too complex.

You could split it up into several artboards and try to export it part by part.

Or into several files and then delete layers.

Yes, I think that was it. I exported half the .ai file to a psd and then the other half to another psd and then combined them. That worked. Thx.
