Direct Selection Tool not working in Outline mode

Clicking on objects placed behind is selecting the foreground object as the regular selection tool does. Even does the same in outline mode. I zoomed in and clicked on the anchor point but still, it seems to be picking the foreground object.

Any idea if there is a common fix for this?

Does it work if you check Select Objesct by Path Only in Preferences?
