filling an object with a gradient affects the last object I filled

Sorry about the confusing discussion title, but something odd is happening in Illustrator (CC 23.0.1 64 bit).

I fill an object with a gradient and deselect it. Then I fill a second object with a different gradient, whereupon the first gradient instantly changes to match the second gradient, even though the first object is not selected. I'm sure this never used to happen. Can anyone explain it?

Cheers in advance.

It might be. Try deselecting that and see if it stops affecting your fills.

Please describe in more detail.

Does this also happen in a new document?

What kind of object is it?

What kind of gradient?

Hi Monika - thanks for the quick response.

Well, the strangest thing. I just created a new document and tried it again and it didn't happen!
Then I went back to the document I was having trouble with and it didn't happen this time either.

Yet it's happened quite a few times with quite a few documents over the past few months.

Could it just be some kind of glitch?

By the way, it happens to any kind of object - rectangle, ellipse, shapes drawn with the pen tool, etc.

And it's with just a straightforward linear gradient.

One thing that comes to mind is the new Global Edit feature. Editing similar shapes and objects globally But you said it doesn't highlight the other object, I'm not sure this is the issue.

And it's not a symbol, right?

That's right, Myra. Not a symbol - just a plain old shape.

I have the 'Include Objects on Canvas' checkbox ticked. Would that be it?

Well, it worked, but like I say it also worked just before I unticked that box.

But that could be the answer! Thank you both so much for your help.

I'm glad it's working--whatever fixed it. It didn't sound exactly like the expected behavior for Global Edit, but if it happens again, I'd recommend checking those options settings.
