Illustrator + mbPro 2016 Touchbar Incredibly SLOW

Just purchased a new MBP w/ touch bar 2016 (I7 2,9, Radeon 460 4Gb) and upgraded to Adobe CC a couple of weeks ago. Reinstalled macOS twice, hardware seems to be okay.

Illustrator (and InDesign for that matter) are extremely slow. It's driving us completely insane. Especially outline view is extremely and surprisingly slow (cmd+y) which has always been truly smooth before (no matter the complexity of the documents). *Just compared to a late MacBook Pro 2012 which runs the same files 100% smoothly.

@Adobe: are there any solutions or ideas what's causing this?!

Mac OS Sierra 10.12.4

Illustrator 2017.1.0 (we tried slightly earlier versions as well)

Your Macbook has a microphone and there might be dictation features always listening. Can you try and turn that off in System setup? Helped other people. I don't have the latest and greatest setup, so I don't know where exactly to look for those setting. But "Audio setup" is perhaps a good start.

Hi Steffen,

Is it happening after the Mac OS update to 10.12.4?  What is the OS in the other Mac, which is working fine? Did you try disabling the GPU (in the preferences)? If not, please do and check. Also check if it works fine if the 5K display is not connected.

Om

It's definitely been there before 10.12.4…

It's a bit better without the 5K connected, but not significantly.

We tried disabling GPU acceleration and it made everything even slower.

We have reinstalled macOS and the entire machine. We have also tried resetting preferences, etc.

The other MBP runs the same software: Sierra 10.12.4 and latest Adobe CC. It's a late 2012 MBP that doesn't support graphic acceleration. The current MBP should definitely smoke that 2012 MBP. Unfortunately it doesn't.

Really trying to figure out what's the cause. Contemplating on ordering a new machine. Is it the MBP w/ tb, is it the AMD Radeon (and if so, only the 460 Pro 4GB?), is it Adobe CC, is it related to the LG 5K? Will it be fixed over time?! The current state is simply unacceptable.

Just installed 17.0 which is far better, but still awful.

GPU-Mode is supposed to be faster (~10x?) than CPU-preview, right? While outline-mode (cmd+y) should be butter smooth, correct? Outline-mode in CC 17.0 ist still smooth, CC 17.0 has no GPU option though which makes regular Preview Mode really slow… so reverting back that far is no option. Will retry CC 2015, though not sure whether to try 2015 or 2015.3…

Does outline-mode utilize GPU-acceleration? It almost feels like it doesn't.

Hi Steffen,

I completely understand your situation. It definitely should not behave like it is doing. With the latest Mac OS update and the patch update of Illustrator, there are few performance issues reported. I've sent you an email, please check and reply. We will need to investigate this further.

Om

Do you expect this to resolve with the next update/iteration of Sierra 10.12.5 and Adobe CC then?

That should certainly be resolved. As informed, it is already reported to the engineering team and they are working on it. Sorry for the inconvenience caused.

It's still a nightmare to use. Really looking forward to macOS High Sierra in autumn—get your +++t together, Adobe.

Hi ohmnath,

Is there any news to this? This is not working for way too long. See last two replies above though.

Happy near year, of course!

Hey there,

Can you confirm this has yet to be addressed in any software updates? - I'm still having the same issues on the latest release of AI (22.1) running on the same MBP 15" 2016 with Touch Bar, Radion 4GB Graphics - macOS High Sierra 10.13.4.

It appears to be most prevalent when creating multiple Artboarda, even when the total file size / complexity is low, and all of the recommended performance optimisations are set inside preferences.

This issue is really killing my productivity. Any info on upcoming updates would be helpful. Thanks mate!

Hi Everyone,

We are very sorry about this. Please try these steps to optimize Illustrator performance on MAC: Improve Illustrator performance on macOS

I would also request you to upvote the issue and leave your comments here: Freezing when working on files with lots of details – Adobe Illustrator Feedback This is the best way of communicating with the Engineering and Product Management teams regarding issues and suggestions so they can be implemented in future releases.

Hi everyone !

Exact same problem with exact same configuration. It's driving me crazy.
The Ultrafine 5K is making 'Outline view' — AND — 'GPU preview' insanely slow.
More when the document gets loaded with a lot of vectors, effects and patterns. Unusable for complex illustrations.

Each click I do involve a 1 or 2 seconds wait.

Using Illustrator on a smaller monitor (with less pixels displayed) like Cintiq Pro 16" helps the software running faster.

Waiting for a fix since Mac OS 10.12.2 and Illustrator CC 2017.1

Latest Mac OS Sierra public beta 10.12.6 installed here with latest Illustrator CC 2017.1.0 / 21.1.0 public version.

Hope there will be a real fix soon for that issue.

As the MBP 2016 + LG 5K + CintiqPro16 is a secondary setup I haven't try since the end of December : it was pretty awful to work on complex illustrations. Too much pixel to manage with a bad GPU management. Didn't notice any huge Illustrator update since, I guess nothing changed so. I'll tell you next time I have to work on it.

An old iMac 27'' (late 2013) with maxed out Nvidia GTX and no retina display. Even the computer is getting old Illustrator is way faster than the MBP 2016 on LG 5K.

MBP 2016 + LG 5K needs a lot more pixels to be pushed than the 2013 non-retina iMac, BUT i am completely on your side. This should run flawlessly.
