My guides appear black even though I've changed their color to red

Hi,

I can't find an answer to this online. To make the guides easier for me to see, I switched them to a shade of red in the Preferences-->Grids & Guides; however, they appear black in my document and when I switch the color back they still appear black.

What am I missing?
