Need help with art project; joining multiple paths to create shapes

Hello!

 

I'm working on an art assignment and I can't figure out how to join multiple overlapping paths without having weird lines show up or the paths distorting. Here's what I have so far:

Each path needs to was created separately but they all overlap each other. I need the paths to connect where they overlap with other lines so that they create shapes. This way, I can fill the shapes and create something that resembles this:
