Automating an existing picture index automatically

I'm working on a existing picture index within a large furniture catalog. In the past we have manually inserted the pictures & captions alphabetically but generated the page number so they update automatically when the item is moved within the catalog. A few questions... is there a way to generate a picture index automatically? Meaning inserting the picture in the right spot within the index automatically instead of manually. Whether this is possible or not my next question is... When a picture is taken out of the index, is there a way to pull all images up one spot? In the past if I took one picture out it meant having to move all images and captions up one spot manually. With a bit of research I haven't been able to find an answer to this question and it seems almost everything is possible if the question is worded correctly. 🙂 It would make my life a lot easier if this could be done and would leave less room for human error. Thanks in advance!

Sure it could be done … let's say, with just 1 click!

Personally, I would just need grey matter and time …!
